1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

To celebrate Fireman’s Day, a town’s special school for orphans(孤儿) held a special meet and greet with the local fire department. That year, the firemen had stopped a forest fire before it could reach houses and buildings.

The town’s firefighters came to the school dressed in uniform and answered all the kids’ questions. Captain Joshua was the department leader and explained each team member’s role. “Everybody has to be in the right place at the right time,” he explained to the children.

Captain Joshua suffered a noticeable burn mark above one of his eyes while fighting against the forest fire. A young boy named David approached Joshua, who noticed that the young boy had a birthmark in the same spot as his burn mark. David had another request for Joshua but was too shy to ask at first. David turned to his teacher, Mrs. Humphries, for approval, and she gave him a thumbs-up.

“Would it be all right if I came to the fire station to see all the equipment and look at the trucks?” David asked. The young boy explained that he dreamed of one day becoming a fireman, which was why he wanted to learn as much as possible. Mrs. Humphries told the captain, “The reason why David is so interested in firemen is that a dangerous fire took his parents from him at a young age.” Hearing this, Joshua decided that the trip would be beneficial for David and agreed to the tour.

That Saturday morning, Joshua showed Mrs. Humphries and David around the fire department. David was smiling from ear to ear. The three had hot dogs at the station. “I want to be a fireman to save many lives so that children don’t have to be sad. I want to be just like you when I grow up,” David said to Joshua before saying goodbye to him.

文章大意:本文属于说明文。一种新的紫色番茄在美国获得批准种植和销售。科学家通过改变这种番茄的DNA.增加了它们的抗氧化剂,使这种番茄可以保存更久,并有助于人们的健康。

4 . Tomatoes are common in daily life. Cat hie Martin, British scientist, has been working on developing purple tomatoes for years. Though the color is unusual, now this special kind of tomatoes has very high levels of antioxidants(AOS,抗氧化剂).

AOS are found naturally in plants like blueberries and red cabbage. Scientists believe AOS may help prevent heart disease and help fight against diseases like diabetes(糖尿病). But tomatoes naturally only have a small amount of AOS in them. Martin wanted to see if she could create tomatoes with lots of AOS by changing the DNA of a tomato plant.

A plant developed from specially created DNA is known as a GMO(转基因生物). Martin added two genes(基因) from a plant called snapdragon. Soon her plants were producing small purple tomatoes with lots of AOS. Even better, the tomatoes remained fresh almost twice as long as normal tomatoes. Martin and other scientists further tested the tomatoes on mice that were likely to get cancer. The mice that were fed the purple tomatoes lived about 30% longer than those fed normal tomatoes. Though that’s good news, experiments on mice don’t always predict what effects on humans will be the same. We need to see more experiments about it.

GMOs were first allowed in America in the late 1990s. But GMO products weren’t popular with customers. Many people were scared by the idea that the foods weren’t natural or safe. There’re still questions about the effects of GMO crops on the environment. However, scientists deny these claims.

Even so, many people have concerns about them. Because of these concerns, most GMO products created over the last 20 years have focused on helping farmers rather than attracting customers.

Anyway, on September 7, 2022, the US approved the purple tomatoes, which is the first time it has approved a GMO plant designed to target human health.

1. Why did Martin experiment on purple tomatoes?
A.They are available easily.B.They have a special color.
C.They don’t have enough AOS.D.They can stop some diseases.
2. What’s the author s attitude to the test on the mice?
A.Favorable.B.Unclear.C.Unsupportive.D.Doubtful.
3. What does the underlined word “so” in Paragraph 5 refer to?
A.The environment affects GMO foods.
B.The customers do not like GMO foods.
C.GMO products are used to help farmers.
D.Scientists think GMO products are safe.
4. What’s the suitable title for the text?
A.Different DNA Can Benefit Plant Growth
B.Scientists Are Changing DNA of Tomatoes
C.Tomatoes with Changed DNA Are Approved
D.Human Health Depends on Changed DNA

5 . As it traveled through the Swiss Alps, a 1.9-kilometer-long locomotive (机车) set the record for the world’s longest passenger train.

Trains have been running in Switzerland for 175 years. In late October, 2022, a festival was held to celebrate that fact. As part of the celebration, the Rhaetian Railway company decided to set the record. It wound through tunnels, mountains and valleys along the Albula Line attracting so many tourists every year, which was recognized as a protected site by UNESCO World Heritage in 2008.

At the festival, 3, 000 ticket holders gathered in the village of Bergin and followed the journey through a live video feed (信息推送).

To prepare for the journey, Swiss engineers had been conducting trial runs for months, testing communication and safety facility to ensure a successful trip. The train took seven drivers and 21 other specially trained workers to run it. All parts of the train had to be kept running at exactly the same speed. To help the drivers communicate with each other, even when they were deep inside tunnels, making their way, the railway set up a special phone system.
