文章大意:本文是一篇夹叙夹议文。文章讲述了作者在自家花园中和家人共同从事园艺的经历、收获和感悟,园艺让作者体会到接触自然的乐趣和享受种植过程的美好。

1 . I’m Andrew Siegel and this is my garden. This is where my family and I grow a lot of different vegetables and flowers. Gardening has been really important to my family because it gives us a chance to spend time outside together, away from all the electronics.

Especially for my five-year-old, it really gives her a chance to be in touch with nature-all the little animals, insects and things that come out here.

We find that a lot of the things that we plan for in the garden don’t always go the way that we’d like them to, and some of the things that we don’t plan for become what we enjoy the most that year. So it’s something that my family and I have learned: To appreciate (欣赏) all of it.

My advice for gardening beginners is to just start. Get a pot, get a little bit of dirt, get a tomato plant or whatever plant you want and just get started. I think sometimes it seems challenging. Trust me, it does not need to be perfect. You will enjoy every little thing you get out of it.

Gardening has taught me patience, something I don’t naturally have a lot of. It takes weeks, takes months for you to put into your work and the patience comes out in the end. You learn not only to be patient in that end product, but you’ve also learned that, after years of gardening, the end product is just part of it.

The journey of growing has become much more important to me than the actual product that we get in the end. Nothing has been so valuable as the time I spend out here. I’m by no means in a farmland, but I do have my own little piece of what I consider heaven, and I’ve really learned to appreciate every little moment — every insect, every plant, every flower — and when you can appreciate it in that way, there’s nothing better.

3. What is the most important for Andrew Siegel in gardening?
A.Planting different vegetables and flowers.
B.Staying at home together with her family.
C.Enjoying the whole process of growing.
D.Harvesting what the family planted.
4. What does the text mainly talk about?
A.The pleasure of gardening.

A black bear was in a dangerous situation when she fell off a 30-meter-high bridge. After a long day in California’s Sierra Nevada mountains, the bear probably thought she was taking a shortcut home. She was walking across the bridge when, suddenly, two cars entered from both sides. There was nowhere to run, so the frightened bear jumped and fell over the side.

Luckily, the bear pulled herself onto an arch (拱形门) under the bridge, but she was trapped (困住) there. A driver saw the unbelievable scene and called 911.Robert Brooks, an animal control officer from the nearby town, was sent to investigate. “I thought it was a joke.” he said. But it wasn’t a joke, so he called Dave Baker of the BEAR League-a group that helps bears in trouble.

Unfortunately, the sky was getting dark, so the volunteers had to wait. Early next morning, the two men returned to the bridge with more volunteers. Amazingly, the bear was still there. They needed to help her quickly. Baker had an idea-they should hang a net under the bear, push her into it, and then lower her to the ground.

Firefighters volunteered to lower the 100-kilogram bear once she was in the net. Police officers closed the road, and when the net arrived, it was hung under the bridge. Then, an animal control officer shot a dart (飞镖) containing a sleeping medicine into the bear’s shoulder. Ann Bryant, head of the BEAR League, stood under the bridge. When the bear was sleepy, Bryant shouted “OK, push!” A volunteer rock climber used his feet to push the bear off the arch, right into the middle of the net.

The bear was gently lowered to the ground

Imagine 50 years from now. Imagine the perfect school.

Getting to school is already difficult because of traffic. In 50 years time, it will be even difficult. A solution is needed. Imagine one big school in your city, a big cyber (网络) school, but the classes are in any different places. In fact there would be classes all around, both in the countryside and the city. You would never need to walk more than 10 minutes to get to school.

Once you get there, there is no teacher speaking at the front of the class. Instead, there is a large screen playing a video of the teacher. There is a classroom helper who walks around helping you with your problems. You can get the best teaching there, and you have a helper who can help you understand your work.

You listen to the teacher for only 15 minutes. Then you work in teams to do group projects and solve problems together. After classes finish, you can stay there and talk with your school friends.

Your class would always be cool in summer and warm in winter. There is solar (太阳能) and wind power on the roof of the building. Each room is kept at a comfortable temperature automatically.

Because your class is close to homes and businesses, you can take part in community life as part of your schooling. If you need to learn about measuring and weighing things, then you can go home and spend time in kitchen with your Mom!If you need to learn about adding and subtracting (减法), then you can spend time in a local shop.

The school of the future is high-tech, but it is a friendly place to be.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文,文章主要介绍了如何提高记忆力。

5 . We’ve all been there-starting at a book, hoping that what we study will stick in our mind. Many of us have probably wondered. “Is there any way to improve memory?” So, why don’t we look at what memory experts say about this?

Every student knows that it’s helpful to review what they’ve studied before. According to experts, we can learn things better if we wait some time before trying to study them again. They say that trying to remember something from your memory after you have had some to forget it will make it easier to remember in future.

Similarly, studies have shown that taking some time to just do nothing after studying might mean that you can remember things better afterwards. It is not clear why this happens. But some think it has to do with the relationship between long-term and short-term memory.

Another study tip is to change between different ideas. Now, connecting them to each other or to images (图像) is often considered a good way to remember something. A word champion Jonathan Hancock says how picturing pieces of information in different physical locations or connecting them to memorable images makes them easier to remember.

There are also more things that we can do to improve our memory. Hancock says that being generally organized makes things easier for your brain. Many other experts also suggest that we should get a lot of rest and exercise. So, the good news to take from this is that while it may be hard, improving our memory is something we can do.

A.By telling a story.

3. What would Hancock advise on improving our memory?
A.Doing nothing after studying.
B.Doing a lot of exercises.
C.Having enough rest.
D.Being generally organized.
4. What does the writer think of improving our memory?
A.Easy.
B.Possible.
C.Useless.
D.Necessary.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文,文章主要讲述一名教师Williams因为对书籍的热爱且能够让更多孩子读书而启动了捐赠图书项目,并一直为这个项目奋斗的故事。

6 . It was Williams’ mother who got her interested in reading books. A librarian, she read to her three children every day. “Not until we went to school,” Williams said. “Until we went to college.”

When Williams, now 54, became a primary school teacher in Virginia, she wanted her students to fall in love with reading just as she had. But early on, she realized that some kids had little chance to read books.

“Kids who are read to perform much better than those who are not,” she said. To Williams, the solution was simple: Give kids books. In 2017, she gave away 900 used children’s books over three days. Most people would be satisfied with that.

She said, “I wanted to do something.”

So she set a new goal for herself: Give away one million books. It sounds like an unreachable number. However, Williams posted on the Internet: “Don’t complain (抱怨) if you aren’t willing to work hard out on the field.” She got to work, first by advising friends to give away books or money to buy books. Soon, as news of Williams’ project spread, strangers started putting books in front of her door. As quickly as the books came in, Williams gave them to local schools for free.

In the four years, Williams has given away more than 78,000 books-only 922,000 more to reach her goal! And she’s not slowing down. “Reading can take you anywhere,” she said. “You can travel in time and space. If you can read, you can learn almost anything.”

A.To make it possible for more children to read books.

A.She could make more friends.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了科学家们已经证明,通过在牛的食物中添加一点海藻,可以减少来自牛的污染。

9 . Cows produce much methane (甲烷) the world’s second worst greenhouse gas, as they break down the grass. They are a large source of the greenhouse gases that are driving climate change. Now scientists have shown the pollution from cows can be reduced by adding a little seaweed (海藻) to their food.

Recently, the researchers from the University of California studied 21 cows on a farm for about five months. They taught the cows to get their food from inside a special hood, which allowed the scientists to know the amount of the methane the cows were giving off. They added a small amount of seaweed to the cows’ food.

The consequences were surprisingly good. In some cases, the cows produced 82% less methane. The improvement depended on the kind of food the cows were given. Even the worst-polluting cows produced 33% less methane. Over the five months, the scientists didn’t see any signs that the cows’ stomachs were getting used to the seaweed and starting to produce more methane again. What’s more, the cows that were fed seaweed gained just as much weight as the other cows.

But there are still some big problems with the idea of feeding cows seaweed. For one thing, there’s not enough seaweed to feed all of the cows in the world. So farmers would have to figure out a way to grow lots of seaweed. A bigger problem is that for most of their lives, cows live in the fields, where they eat grass. That means there’s no chance to feed them seaweed every day.

Still, as the study shows, something as simple as feeding cows seaweed can help reduce some of the pollution causing the climate crisis.

1. Why did the researchers carry out the study?
A.To test the effects of the seaweed.
B.To discover healthier grass for cows.
C.To improve the cows’ living conditions.
D.To measure the amount of methane in the world.
2. What’s the third paragraph mainly about?
A.The background of the subject.B.The results of the study.
C.The content of the experiment.D.The process of the research.
3. What is the biggest challenge in the researchers’ opinion?
A.Seaweed is not as tasty as grass.
B.Seaweed is dying out in the world.
C.Cows fed with seaweed gained weight easily.
D.Cows can hardly have daily access to seaweed.
4. What is the author’s attitude towards the findings?
A.Positive.B.Doubtful.C.Unclear.D.Negative.
