文章大意:本文是一篇夹叙夹议文。文章主要讲述青少年和父母之间发生的冲突及解决方案。

1 . Conflict (冲突) between teenagers and parents happens for a lot of reasons. Sometimes conflict happens between teenagers and parents just because conflict happens between human beings anyway. Humans have different needs, different feelings, different opinions about what they want, and the relationship with people can be really difficult. However, teenagers can cause further conflict because of the hormonal (生理的) changes that are happening and the stage of life that they're in.

Teenagers and parents have different understanding about rules and at times they find it difficult to look into the future. So parents and teenagers will often experience conflict about many things, do chores, homework, whether teenagers speak respectfully or not and about what they're allowed to do.

Before we think about rule boundaries (界线) for teenagers, we need to make sure that we have a really good relationship base. There's no point saying “From now on, you have to listen to me”: if you don't have a positive relationship with your teenager. We need to go back and make sure there is some degree of shared respect, and some degree of positive communication and enjoyment being together. you do that first, it means that rule boundaries are a lot easier to set up.

Often we're dealing with conflict on the fly. This is not the right time to be dealing with it. We really want parents and teenagers to sit down and think about the kinds of things that may happen in the house before the problems come. The more detailed your rule boundaries are for teenagers, the more likely it is that they are going to follow them. So this means we don't have rule boundaries like “Have the bathroom cleaned”. It needs to be “The floors mopped, nothing on the countertop and the mirrors cleaned by ten o'clock every Saturday”: Rule boundaries need to be written down, and set out ahead of time so the teenager knows exactly what's expected.

1. What's important to set up a rule boundary easily for teenagers?
A.Being strict from the start.B.Developing a good relationship with them first.
C.Saying"No" to their requirements.D.Avoiding close talks with them.
2. Which of the following rules are teenagers most likely to follow?
A.Doing some housework.B.Having a good reading habit.
C.Cleaning the bathroom.D.Finishing your homework by five.
3. What do the underlined words "on the fly" in the last paragraph probably mean?
A.In a hurry.B.On the plane.C.By oneself.D.Another day.
4. What's the best title for the text?
A.Growing PainsB.Teenage Problems
C.Parent-Child Conflict and SolutionsD.Knowing the Conflict

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。无论你是和你最好的朋友还是陌生人说话,尊重他们都能显示出你的善良和体贴。文章介绍了一些在生活中表达尊重的简单方法。

2 . How to Show Respect

Whether you’re talking to your best friend or a stranger, respecting them shows that you’re kind and considerate. Here are some easy ways to show respect in your life.

Listen to others.

Practice active listening to show you respect others.     1     Nod your head and ask follow-up questions to stay focused in the conversation. Even if you disagree, try to consider the point of view before responding.

Confirm (肯定) people’s opinions.

When you’re talking to someone, confirm their opinions in your own words. You can also mention their achievements to let them know you see how hard they’ve worked. You could say something like, “What you just said was really cool.     2    ” Or, “I can tell you’ve worked super hard to get your business off the ground.”

Apologize when you’re in the wrong.

It shows a great deal of maturity (成熟). If you mess up, a simple “I’m sorry” goes a long way. Try not to make excuses for yourself.     3     For example, if you forgot a deadline, you could say, “I’m really sorry. I’ll be setting reminders so this doesn’t happen again.”

    4

Stick to your word. If you commit (承诺) to an event or make plans with someone, come through on your end of the deal. Being reliable shows respect for people’s time. Have your materials in order and complete all the necessary work ahead of time.     5     It can be tough at first, but it’s better to be honest.

A.Do what you say you’ll do.
B.Just say no if you can’t commit.
C.Wait to talk instead of merely listening.
D.I can tell you’ve thought a lot about this topic.
E.Watch and be quiet when someone else is talking.
F.Excuses are useless if you want to correct your mistakes.
G.It might also be helpful to have a plan to avoid such mistakes again.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了一家日本出版公司对废纸的处理。

3 . People have different ways of dealing with waste paper, specifically used newspapers. Some put them in the recycling area, while others keep them as wrappers (包装纸). While these are both good measures, a Japanese publishing company had a better idea for their end use.

The Mainichi Newspapers Co., Ltd. invented the “Green Newspaper”, which allows people to grow plants with it. This unique newspaper was published on Greenery Day, which is focused on environmental news and made of green paper with seeds placed into it. What makes it even more special is the ink (油墨) used to print words and photos, which is made from plants. The publisher advises readers to tear the used newspaper into small pieces and plant them in a container with soil. They should water them, like they would do for any plant. Within a few weeks, the seeds will grow into plants.

This brilliant concept was invented by Dentsu Inc., one of Japan’s most famous advertising agencies, which works with the publishing company on the initiative (倡议). The publisher’s belief is environmental sustainability (持续性). As its mission statement says, “The Mainichi doesn’t take action only through information, but also by solving global issues.” With joint efforts, this initiative has reached the corners of Japan and sold around millions of copies daily. Other such initiatives producing plantable paper are also seen in India and the US.

About 95 million trees are lost for producing newspapers every year. The Internet, the number of whose users stands for 62.5 percent of the population worldwide, has influenced how people read news and the print readership has dropped greatly. However, the reinvention and reimagination of this newspaper will bring about a change in the publishing industry as well as having an environmental influence.

1. What do we know about the “Green Newspaper”?
A.It uses high-tech materials.
B.It provides energy for seeds.
C.It’s printed with plant-based ink.
D.It’s published to celebrate Greenery Day.
2. What message does the publisher’s mission statement convey?
A.It’s easier said than done.
B.Everything comes to him who waits.
C.Many hands make light work.
D.Actions speak louder than words.
3. What’s the author’s attitude to the “Green Newspaper”?
A.Doubtful.B.Supportive.
C.Indifferent.D.Negative.
4. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.About 59 million trees are lost for producing newspapers.
B.The Internet has changed the way people read news totally.
C.The popularity of the Internet leads to the fall of the print readership.
D.The “Green Newspaper” will encourage more people to protect the environment.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了一项研究,研究表明,教会孩子与他人产生共鸣可以显著地提高他们的创造力,并可能带来其他一些好处。

8 . Teaching children in a way that encourages them to empathize (产生共鸣) with others is of great significance to children’s creativity, new research suggests.

Pupils at two inner London schools were involved in the study. Pupils at one school spent the year following curriculum-prescribed lessons, while the other group’s lessons used a set of engineering design thinking tools which aim to develop students’ ability to think creatively and to cause empathy, while solving real-world problems.

Pupils at the intervention school were asked to design an asthma-treatment “pack” for children aged six and under. Pupils were given various creative and empathetic “tools” in order to do so: for example, they were shown data about the number of childhood asthma deaths in the U.K., and a video which describes a young child having an attack. They also explored the problem and tested their design ideas by role-playing various stakeholder (参与方) — patients, family members and medical staff.

Both sets of pupils were assessed for creativity at both the start and end of the school year. The results showed a statistically significant increase in creativity among pupils at the intervention school, where the thinking tools were used. At the start of the year, the creativity scores of pupils in the control school, which followed the standard curriculum, were 11% higher than those at the intervention school. By the end, however, the situation had completely changed: creativity scores among the intervention group were 78% higher than the control group.

Nicholl, the leading researcher of the study, said, “Teaching for empathy has been problematic despite being part of the National Curriculum for over two decades. This evidence suggests that it is a missing link in the creative process, and vital if we want education to encourage the designers and engineers of tomorrow.”

1. What were pupils at the intervention school asked to do?
A.Watch the process of an asthma attack.
B.Gather data about asthma deaths in children.
C.Show sympathy for the young asthma sufferers.
D.Test their asthma-treatment “pack” on patients.
2. What does the research find about the pupils in the control school?
A.They preferred to study the standard curriculum.
B.They were smarter at the beginning of the school year.
C.They had little empathy for the young children with asthma.
D.There were less creative than those at the intervention school in the end.
3. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Empathy education and creativity go hand in hand.
B.Empathy education was neglected in the creative process.
C.Empathy education is a must for future designers and engineers.
D.Empathy education hasn’t been included in the National Curriculum.
4. What’s the passage mainly about?
A.The standard curriculum limits pupils’ creativity.
B.Teaching pupils empathy improves their creative abilities.
C.Solving real-world problems promotes pupils’ all-round development.
D.An asthma-treatment “pack” was created by pupils at a London school.
