2 . Separation, money troubles, and transitional (过渡的) adjustments are all stressful events to the members of a family. Learning effective skills is key to solving the disagreements.
Schedule a time to talk as a group. When working together, you are more likely to solve family differences.
Focus on the issue at hand. When disagreements occur, people tend to bring up any and every unresolved issue they have ever faced with the other parties. This blurs the point of the discussion. Try to uncover what is important about the current problem.
Have everyone state what they truly mean. Direct communication is essential to effective conflict resolution.
Decide on a solution together. Once everyone has shared their needs, wants, and concerns, consider all the suggestions that each party has provided and look for a middle ground.
A.Seek professional advice. |

3 . A six-year-old longing to keep a unicorn in her backyard figured she’d get the hard part out of the way first.
Last November, Madeline wrote a letter to the Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control with a straightforward request. “Dear LA County, I would like your approval if I can have a unicorn in my backyard if I can find one. Please send me a letter in response.”
Director Mayeda replied two weeks later. The department does in fact license unicorns, she said, under certain conditions. Those include polishing the unicorn’s horn at least once a month with a soft cloth, feeding it watermelon at least once a week, covering it with only nontoxic and biodegradable sparkles and giving it regular access to sunlight, moonbeams and rainbows. And, because unicorns are indeed very rare to find, the department is also giving Madeline a toy unicorn to keep her company during her search, as a token of appreciation.
“It is always rewarding to hear from young people who thoughtfully consider the requirements of providing a loving home for animals,” Mayeda wrote in the letter. “I like your sense of responsible pet ownership to seek permission in advance to keep a unicorn in Los Angeles County.”
Mayeda told the Washington Post that this is the first time the department has received a request for a license for a unicorn or any mythical creature. They were impressed with the first-grader for wanting to ask permission in the first place, and doing her research to work out how to go about that. She and her colleagues deal with a lot of “life-and-death” issues on the job, whether that’s seeing cases of animal abuse or animals hurting people or making decisions about having to put down dangerous or sick animals. So Madeline’s letter has considerably brightened their spirits, and she is due to visit the department this week to discuss her unicorn license application. Safe to say, she’s in for a magical surprise.
1. Why did Madeline write the letter?A.To apply to visit a unicorn. | B.To learn to provide animal care. |
C.To ask permission to keep a pet. | D.To figure out how to find a unicorn. |
A.Her application was disapproved. | B.Requirements should be met for the license. |
C.She was presented with a live unicorn. | D.Guidance was given for her search. |

A.Because it is the first application letter for a pet. |
B.Because animal protection is a life-and-death issue. |
C.Because they are worn out with their daily work. |
D.Because they are touched with the girl’s deeds. |
4 . I make the most and the least sense when I’m riding my bike. It’s one of the rare things in life that lets you escape from the world, while also connecting you to it. I love to drive my way through forests, around lakes, and into little communities I never knew existed.
Along the way, my brain escapes from stress. Life quiets down to simple rhythms. Problems seem to disappear. Throw in a good podcast or music, and I’ll be gone for hours. On a nice long ride, you start finding new layers of yourself, new bursts of energy. That’s when I feel like my body is actually weightless.
Riding a bike is especially good for people like me, who have long-running knee problems.
I’m missing a fairly important ligamen(韧带)in my left knee — a surgeon took it out on my 1st birthday, along with a tumor that had grown under my kneecap. That meant I learned to walk in a full leg cas(石膏). One leg grew a little shorter than the other, making me self-conscious about the special shoes I wore. But on a bike, I was just like anyone else. And my doctor told me from an early age that riding a bike would build up muscles to help hold my knee together.
The idea of being a “serious” cyclist still strikes me as a bit funny. After all, riding is fun. And when you’re riding for fitness, it usually means you’re using a very efficient machine not to get from point A to B, but just to ride around in a loop, with your feet moving in circles. That’s not to say I don’t keep track of my average speed after a long ride, or my monthly mileage. Those statistics are a way for me to compete with myself, and stay motivated.
I’m glad cycling has helped me stay healthy. But I love that it’s given me a place to release the pressure. Leaning over my handlebars, I’ve come to terms with setbacks and made plans for the future.
1. What can the author benefit from the cycling?A.Losing weight. | B.Making his body energetic. |
C.Getting enough fresh air. | D.Setting off for an adventure. |

A.Life always makes sense. | B.That’s why I love cycling. |
C.I can do everything I want. | D.I do some crazy things on my bike. |
5 . How to Make Reading a Regular Habit
I’ve always been a bookworm. There’s no place I’d rather be than buried in the pages of an attractive story, absorbed into another life, another world. Yet many friends and fellow book-lovers have told me: “Oh, I haven’t read a book in ages... I’m just too busy.” However, research has found that regular reading helps us relax: reading for just six minutes can reduce stress levels by 68 percent.
Dedicate reading time. Setting aside some dedicated time every day—whether on your morning commute (通勤) or in the bath before bed—is a good place to start.
Listen to an audiobook. For those who find it tough to spend time on reading, audiobooks allow you to multitask. Book blogger Amanda Chatterton says she sticks to her headphones and “reads” while going for an hour-long pre-work walk in the morning. She says, “
Join a book club. Joining in a book club is a perfect solution for people who like to combine reading with socializing.
Making more time for reading doesn’t have to be a chore, and your life will be all the richer for it.
A.Set a challenge. |
B.Connect with book lovers online. |
C.It can also inspire you to try new types. |
D.So how can we make reading a regular habit? |
E.They are such a good way to increase your reading. |
F.There are plenty of ways to build up a reading community. |
G.Even just 15 minutes will see you finish an average-length book in 20 days |

7 . It’s called the Bank of Happiness, but it has nothing to do with money. Founded a year ago in Estonia’s capital Tallinn, it’s a forum in which more than 2,000 members from Estonia and other countries connect to offer or receive services free of charge.
The site carries more than 500 ads in English, German and Estonian from people offering or seeking all kinds of things, including teaching and tips on cooking. The website is also translated into French and Spanish.
Founder Airi Kivi says the goal is to make people think and act with their hearts. “After the worldwide outbreak of the pandemic, I thought, ‘Wow, our bank is perfect for the crisis and a lot of people are unemployed and they can use it to harvest what they need.’”
So how does it work? It’s simple: You sign up using your real name and post what you are offering or what your need is, as long as it doesn’t involve money or products.
Masseuse Terge Reintem says she signed up when she was unemployed because she needed to improve her skills by learning from others. But she stayed on even after finding a new job because she says it feels good to volunteer. “If I discover a new technique, I want my bank customers to first experience it,” Reintem says, adding they are often nicer than the paying ones.
Member Veronika Davel says she infringed the rules with her first request when she asked for a product: a computer. But she did it unknowingly. Later, she began offering services of her own on the bank’s website. “The main thing I really could offer was English,” Davel explains. “There was a young girl who needed to have better English for her job and I gave her a hand.”
The site has many more offers of help than requests for it. That’s as it should be, Kivi says, adding that the bigger reward comes from giving.

8 . The term “Metaverse” is the latest buzzword (流行语) to capture the tech industry’s imagination — so much so that one of the best-known internet platforms is rebranding to signal is embrace of the futuristic idea.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s announcement that he’s changing his company’s name to Meta Platforms Inc. might be the biggest thing to happen to the metaverse since science fiction writer Neal Stephenson coined the term for his 1992 novel “Snow Crash”. But Zuckerberg and his team are hardly the only tech visionaries with ideas on how the metaverse, which will employ a mix of virtual reality and other technologies, should take shape.
What is the metaverse? Zuckerberg has described it as a “virtual environment” you can go inside of — instead of just looking at on a screen. Essentially, it’s a world of endless, interconnected virtual communities where people can meet, work and play, using virtual reality headsets and glasses, smartphone or other devices. The metaverse also could be a game -changer for the work-from-home shift amid the coronavirus pandemic. Instead of seeing co-workers on a video call, employees could join them in a virtual office.
Zuckerberg’s embrace of the metaverse in some ways contradicts a central tenet (信条) of its biggest enthusiasts. They envision the metaverse as online culture’s liberation from tech platforms like Facebook that assumed ownership of people’s accounts, photos, posts and traded off what they collected from that data. “We want to be able to move around the internet with ease, but we also want to be able to move around the/Internet in a way we’re not tracked and monitored," said Steve Jang, who focuses on cryptocurrency (数字货币) technology. There is a growing concern about Facebook trying to lead the way into a virtual world that could require even more personal data and offer greater potential for abuse and misinformation when it hasn’t fixed those problems in its current platforms.
1. Why is Zuckerberg changing the name of his company?A.Because he plans to quit his present business. | B.Because he has founded the metaverse. |
C.Because he will engage in the metaverse. | D.Because he wants to draw public attention. |
A.Users should be responsible for their personal data. | B.Cryptocurrency technology should be monitored. |
