2 . It’s long known to us that living close to major roads is harmful to people due to the exposure to air pollution. However, road traffic noise is also a widespread problem in cities whose impact on children’s health remains poorly understood. A new study conducted at 38 schools in Barcelona suggests that traffic noise at schools has a harmful effect on the development of working memory and attention in primary school students.
The study included 2,680 children between 7 and 10 years of age. To assess the possible impact of traffic noise on their cognitive (认知的) development, the researchers focused on two abilities that develop rapidly during preadolescence (青春期前) and are essential for learning and school attainment: attention and working memory.
The fieldwork for the study was carried out over a 12-month period in 2012 and 2013,during which the participants completed the cognitive tests four times. The aim of these tests was not only to assess their working memory and attention but also to study their evolution over time. Over the same period, noise measurements were taken in front of the 38participating schools, as well as in the playground s and inside classrooms.
In the analysis of outdoor noise levels of schools, higher average noise levels and greater fluctuation (波动) in noise levels were both associated with poorer student performance on all tests. Inside the classroom, greater fluctuation in noise levels was also associated with slower progress over the course of the year on all cognitive tests. However, children exposed to higher average classroom noise levels over the course of the year performed worse than students in quieter classrooms only on the attention test, but not on the working memory test.
The researchers used the 2012 road traffic noise map of the city of Barcelona to estimate the average noise level at each participant’s home. In this case, however, no association was observed between residential noise and cognitive development.
“This could be because noise exposure at schools is more harmful as it affects concentration and learning processes,” commented Maria Forester. “On the other hand, although noise measurements were taken at the schools, noise levels at the children’s homes were estimated using a noise map that may be less accurate and, in any case, only reflected outdoor noise. This, too, may have influenced the results.”

3 . It was a week before Christmas, but things were far from cheery. Our task was to deliver as many boxes of food as possible to those in need in Camden, New Jersey. There were no Christmas carolers (唱颂歌的人) walking these streets that were lined with boarded-up (用木板封住的) houses and broken windows. Mothers kept their children close as they hurried down the streets. It was mid-afternoon, but even the bright sun couldn’t warm this place.
Red tickets in the windows marked which houses we were to visit. Our white truck stopped in front of one townhouse and our group knocked on the door. In our arms were boxes filled with ham, bread and other essentials to make the perfect Christmas dinner. Four small faces glanced through the curtains and one exhausted mom answered the door. She seemed embarrassed to be caught in her nightgown with undone hair. She was in her mid-20s, but her rough skin and tired eyes added years.
“Sacred Heart food delivery service,” I smiled. “Where can we put this for you?”
She pointed and as we entered the house, I noticed the conditions they lived in. The children climbed around, wearing only diapers. There were no carpets, only cold concrete beneath our feet. There was no Christmas tree or decorations. My heart sank. It was so cold, and I found it hard to believe that this was reality for this family. We set the boxes down and the mother grabbed my hand.
“You don’t know how much of a blessing this is to me and my family,” she said, crying, “We are just getting by. ” I opened my arms and gave her a hug.
“Happy holidays!” I replied before I headed out the door. I realized how warm I felt inside.
This was unlike anything I had ever experienced. We cannot help what family we are born into, but we can help each other.

8 . Since early March, 2023, Zibo local barbecue drew great attention online. According to reports, Zibo received 4.8 million visitors in March, 2023, a year-on-year increase of 134 percent, and tourist income was up by 60 percent. A total of 1,288 barbecue businesses served 135,800 customers a day on average, most of whom were university students from across the province and nationwide.
For a long time, Zibo was a mediocre city in almost all aspects. However, “taking the high-speed train to taste barbecue in Zibo” suddenly became a hot label (标签) for this non-traditional tourist city. But how did Zibo rise to fame?
First, it comes down to the ambition, determination and creativity of the city government. From July 2022 to February 2023, Zibo organized many trips to the city for university students. When the number of visits reached its peak, it did not panic but soon put forward several supportive policies, such as setting up a “Golden Stove Award”, establishing a barbecue association, making a map of Zibo barbecue restaurants, and opening 21 fixed tourist routes in addition to barbecue. It also arranged many volunteers to guide tourists and ensure public safety.
Second, Zibo’s sudden popularity also resulted from the tourism recovery China has experienced after the pandemic (疫情). The city aims to promote both its tourist industry and its long-term development. To reach its goal, the city provided young people, especially university students, with convenient services and created a welcoming atmosphere. For instance, non-Zibo students can enjoy free stays three times a year for two night s each time at youth inns(青年旅社). It sent out invitations to students including those of famous universities to visit Zibo for free, a sign showing its thirst for talented young people.
With the determination of its government and efforts of its citizens, this traditional heavy industrial city is making every effort to grasp the tourism opportunity and flourish.
