1 . The sun is about to set when we reach our destination, the home of a nomadic (游牧的) herder (牧民) family. My host, Batbayer, has a cheerful face, with deep wrinkles and a color from long hours working outdoors, giving him the look of a sailor from an Ernest Hemingway novel. We have pre-arranged our visit but travellers in Mongolia can drive up to pretty much any ger and feel welcomed to stay. You don’t knock on the door: when you approach a nomadic family, a customary greeting is to say a kindly “Hold your dog,” even if you don’t see a dog.
We feast at the family home on one of the country’s most distinct and tasty dishes: khorkhog, or mutton cooked using hot rocks. This comes served with onions, a variety of berries, and milk — besides more plates of meat, all from the family’s own livestock (家畜).
Mongolia is home to one of the world’s few remaining truly nomadic cultures. About a fifth of the population are herders, and nomadism is complicatedly woven into the country’s spirit. But modern life is catching up with the people on the grassland at rapid speed. This is in large part what my book is about: an outsider’s exploration of a society undergoing modernisation while trying to hold fast to its deeply rooted traditional values.
Many of the livestock here, especially the more valuable breeds such as horses, camels and cattle, are implanted with microchips that can be monitored via satellite-based services. “I would like to use the internet more because it’s fun and useful; but the animals like it here. This is a good place for them,” Batbayer says when I ask if better internet connectivity might influence where to move his livestock next. “I would never choose Facebook over the wellbeing of the animals.”

My Uncle Joe had a farmland in the countryside. Every summer, I would spend a few weeks there, playjing around and doing some help. his farmland is often visited by crows (乌鸦). I discovered that they were so intelligent. They would drop nuts onto roads to be broken open by passing cars and even could use their sharp beaks (鸟喙) to open cups of bottles.
That day was the hottest day of the year. Even the birds would rest in the shades of our yard to cool themselves. Uncle Joe was wiping sweat off his face when he came into the house. “Ken, did you let the air out of two tyres on my old truck?” he asked me. And I denied.
“I guess I must have run over some nails,” Uncle Joe said. I helped him pump (打气)some air into the tyres so we could drive to the garage. The garage man couldn’t find any nails, It seemed it was due to the opening of the tyre valves (阀门).
“Maybe, Ken, here, was playing a trick,” he told Uncle Joe.
“I wouldn’t do that!” I said with red face, “Flattyres aren’t funny.”
“But there are only three others who live nearby, and they’re on vacation,” Uncle Joe said. “It’s a mystery.”
The next morning was even hotter. Uncle Joe stormed into the house, shouting at me, “Now three tyres are flat! Who else could be pulling such a trick?”
We pumped up the tyres again. When Uncle Joe went back inside, I decided to solve this mystery myself. I hid behind a bush, keeping an eye on the truck. Maybe some kid who is visiting one of our neighbors is doing it, I thought.
The sun got hotter and hotter. I got sleepier and sleepier. Suddenly I heard a ssst, ssst hissing sound. My eyes flew open, and I stared at the strangest sight I’d ever seen.

Lce Hui Ling was exposed to environmental and social issues at a young age. Born into a family of artists, she was impressed by the environmental subjects of her mother’s art works and thus developed a pasion for the environment. “As a child, would worry about the ozone layer (臭氧层) expanding, rubbish pollution, and animals going extinct. Very serious topics for a little girl!”
After graduating from the Sarah Lawrence College in New York and moving back to Malaysia, Hui Ling’s conceras for the environment grew. She set up a Greenpeace Malaysia online community on various social media platforms. This was instrumental in the eventual setting up of the Malaysian office in 2017.
Hui Ling helped to organise and lead at meet-ups, as well as run workshops and training. An artist and educator, Hui Ling organised participatory art projects in line with Greenpeace Malaysia campaigns on deforestation, plastic pollution and consumerism. One of them was the Wings of Paradise project, where she led a team of 30 youth volunteers in creating a 64-meter long mural (壁画), showing the essence of the brightly coloured feathers, crazy dances and fantastic behaviours of birds of paradise (天堂鸟). The project aimed to remind the public of the constant threat to this Indonesian wildlife, and inspire people to act to protect it.
“Environmental activism has taught me that doing good is not a sprint, but a marathon, and we need to make ourselves tougher and stronger to keep going through the difficult times,” Hui Ling said. “There is a ray of hope in the youth activism of the last few years. The youths of today are well organised and passionate in expressing their desire for positive change and a green and sustainable future for all.” said Hui Ling.

“Brrrrr—boppppp!” Ricky sat at the kitchen table, imitating the drumbeat of his favorite song as he finished his math homework. His pencil moved in time to the percussive (打击乐的) rhythms booming from his earbuds.
Grandma Johnson came into the kitchen just as Ricky was putting his math notebook back into his backpack.
“I don’t know how you get anything done listening to that hippity-hoppity noise,”she exclaimed.
Ricky took out his earbuds and fought hard not to roll his eyes. He knew Grandma Johnson was half-teasing. But the hip-hop rhythms relaxed his mind and quietened his thoughts, allowing his brain to focus on the page.
“Guess what, Grandma?” said Ricky. “I’ve finished my homework.”
Without his earbuds, Ricky could hear the music playing in the background — a song by Diana Ross and the Supremes. Pushing aside his annoyance, he took his grandmother’s hand and gave her a little twirl (旋转). Ricky has always felt close to his grandma. And now that his high school was near his grandmother’s Brooklyn home, he went there every day to eat dinner and do his homework before heading home to Harlem. Ricky knew his presence helped ease his grandmother’s loneliness, and he loved spending time with her. But… he just wished she would stop dismissing his favorite music as noise.
That evening, Grandma surprised Ricky with tickets to a Stevie Wonder concert at Madison Square Garden. Ricky was secretly disappointed, as he believed the concert would be boring compared to the hip-hop concerts he had attended. However, he smiled and thanked his grandmother for the gift. At dinner, Grandma Johnson took out her old photo albums and told Ricky stories about her past experiences at music festival s and concerts, including a Stevie Wonder concert in 1972. “This is not just music,” Grandma told him. “This is Black History, Black Culture. Blind as he is, he is a great musician.” But a Stevie Wonder concert today —an old guy on stage, playing a keyboard and singing? No dancers? No special effects? How boring!
Paragraph 1The day of the concert arrived.
