文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。主要介绍的是患有老年痴呆症的父亲给了作者一次难忘的圣诞节。

1 . Following Christmas dinner, my family was relaxing around the kitchen table. We had all enjoyed traditional turkey, sweet potatoes lightly coated with brown sugar. The good cooking smells still stayed. Dad had risen from his chair and was contentedly standing nearby.

My nephew, Andrew, never one to sit still for too long, began dribbling (运球) his new basketball. Upon nearing Dad, he stopped — almost uncertainly. With shaking, wrinkled hands, Dad had reached out for the ball. He did not speak, and the boy, confused, looked up and over at us. It took some convincing, but the ball was carefully passed over.

A playful smile appeared on his face. The twinkle in his eyes shone brighter than any Christmas lights. Holding the ball and reaching forward, Dad bounced it on the floor then caught it. Gently throwing the ball away, Dad began a game of catch. His active participation was remarkable to me, since he had advanced Alzheimer’s disease. It had robbed him of many memories and the recognition of people, places and points in time. Despite this, Dad clearly recognized the ball and what you could do with it.

In my younger years, playing with Dad was rare. To his credit, Dad worked hard and provided for us. He was very private and never showed or shared much emotion, His game of choice was chess, which he did eventually teach me how to play. As an adult, I had become a caregiver and watched helplessly as Dad declined. Connecting moments between father and son had been few and far between before he took the basketball.

I’m not sure how long we played catch. What I do know is that our game ended all too soon, and it was time to face the reality of dirty dishes piled high on counter-tops. The moment, though, will certainly linger forever. On this Christmas, Dad gave me a special memory — one that I will always treasure. These stories about meeting Santa will fill you with Christmas spirit.

1. How did Andrew react to Dad’s request in the beginning?
A.He hesitated to pass the ball.B.He invited Dad to the game.
C.He observed Dad carefully.D.He cheered for Dad’s recovery.
2. What role did Dad play in the author’s childhood?
A.A doug teacher.B.A true-worthy friend
C.A hardworking breadwinner.D.A helpless caregiver.
3. What makes this Christmas unforgettable?
A.The strengthened father-son bond.B.Dad’s remarkable basketball skills.
C.The festive atmosphere hanging over.D.The tasty food enjoyed by the family.
4. What does the underlined word linger in the last paragraph probably mean?
A.differ.B.build.C.stick.D.fade.

Louisa Cantoni became aware of a young man leaning against the side of her house, a cigarette hanging from his mouth. He looked to be 13 or 14 years old with threatening, dark brown eyes.

When she was younger, the little ones would flock around her. They loved her Italian accent and flowers and always stayed nearby when it was tomato season, popping her sweet tomatoes into their mouths. Those sweet memories were just that. So much had changed in the neighborhood. The Italian section of the downtown area had been turned into low-rent housing and overgrown yards. New renters had just moved in and worn her out with all the rudeness, the shouting, and the sad faces of the grannies.

One day, Louisa was harvesting the last of her vegetables when a shadow appeared from behind her. She knew it was the boy. “What, what do you want from me?” She asked in a tired tone. The boy stood silent for a while. “My momma, she likes flowers, show me how?” he offered. “Show you what, how to be a nice person?” Louisa had no interest in showing this boy anything. “Show me how to grow those.” He pointed to the flowers. Louisa sighed. “Just go on away and leave me alone.”

“You ain’t gotta be so mean,” Jevon murmured and left.

The next day, the boy came as usual, but she noticed he was different, younger, innocent and beautiful with smooth brown skin and broad shoulders.

“What is your name, young man?” She asked.

“My name Jevon.”

“Thank you, I am Louisa. Miss Louisa to you.” She stuck out her hand which he reluctantly shook. “What is it you want from me? You stare at me; you steal my zinnias(百日菊). That’s not nice, Jevon.”

“I want to learn how to grow a flower for my momma.” He sounded like a little boy.

“I have rules, Jevon. No rudeness, no hoodie(连帽衫), pull your pants up, and no cigarettes, ever.”

“You’re not my momma. I don’t have to do any of that,” he responded.

I always love going to school as I can meet my friends and learn from my teachers. Everyone has an unforgettable moment in their school life and mine was in junior middle school.

That day started as usual. I woke up, got ready and went to school, where I first met my friends and then we were required to gather for the daily get-together. After that, we went to our respective classes. I went to my classroom as well and settled down as usual, greeting my classmates and waiting for the teacher to arrive.

It was a chemistry class and the teacher asked us to go to the laboratory to conduct a long-anticipated experiment. I took my stuff and was ready to leave the classroom when I felt sharp pain in my stomach. I sat down for a while, with hands rubbing my stomach. I was waiting for the pain to go off by itself. However, it was in vain. The pain still remained. Unfortunately, all of my friends had gone except the class monitor, the one I had never thought to make friends with.

But anyway, I called him and informed him of my condition, asking him to help me contact my parents. Noticing my trembling voice and begging eyesight, he agreed instantly and went to contact my parents without any hesitation.

On his departure, I realized that things were getting worse. Beads of sweat dropping off my paleface, I had to lean against the desk to ease the severe pain without realizing I suddenly vomited (呕吐). Everything around me was in a total mess, including myself. At that point, I thought my life was over and was scared of all the mean words to be said by my classmates and schoolmates. At that embarrassing moment, the class monitor came back. Obviously, he knew my dilemma. I was frozen with pain on the spot, maybe awkwardness, to be accurate.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章介绍了珍妮和史蒂文夫妇在相处的五十年间因为爱和理解一直陪伴在彼此身边的故事。

4 . Jenny married Steven in 1950. They loved each other but Steven had bad tempers. As a new bride(新娘), Jenny moved into Steven’s house on his farm. She took a shoe box with her and put it in her closet (壁橱). She asked Steven not to open the box. Thinking that everyone has his/her secret that he/she never wanted others to know, Steven accepted it.

For 50 years, Steven left the box alone, even without touching it. Finally, Jenny was ill and dying. Steven thought the box must hold something very important and it was time to open it, so he asked Jenny whether he could open the box. Jenny said yes.

Opening the box, Steven found two doilies(装饰小垫) and $82,500. He took the things to Jenny and asked where this came from.

“Well, my mother gave me the box the day we got married,” she explained, “She said that love needed understanding, so did life. She knew you had bad tempers, so she told me to make a doily whenever I felt hurt and frustrated(沮丧), so that I wouldn’t get mad at you.” Steven was glad that in the past 50 years Jenny had made only two doilies. Then he asked about the money.

“In fact, after having made too many doilies, I began to sell them. Each brought us $50. That’s the money I’ve made by selling the doilies.”

When I set off for my first day of a new school, I was really terrified. For months after moving here, my main company had been my mother or other adults. I could only speak German and hardly spoke a word of Dutch.

“It’s always difficult to start anything new but you are going to be fine with new friends,” my mother comforted me.

We went into a classroom where there were about 20 children who looked extremely busy. I spotted a girl with dark hair that was almost black. I couldn’t see her face, as her back was turned toward me. In that moment, she turned around and looked at me. In a flash, we recognized each other. It was the girl from the corner grocery store where we first met! We instantly rushed into each other’s arms like long-separated sisters, sentences in German flowing between us like a volcano of connection. My anxiety disappeared and I smiled.

“My name is Annelies. You can call me Anne,” she said.

As two little girls who didn’t know Dutch, we were thrilled to find each other, and I didn’t even notice when my relieved mother walked silently out of the door. Anne was also new to the school. Her family had recently arrived from Germany. I was shy. On the contrary, Anne was outgoing and optimistic, having no difficulty adapting to a new environment and getting along with others despite the language barrier.

When we went home after school, Anne and I were thrilled to discover we were also next-door neighbors. It took me less than a minute to race up to Anne’s apartment, which was a floor above ours. Then every day we walked the ten minutes to school together.

Soon we became good friends and I knew a lot about Anne: she was a girl of confidence and great determination, with an aim to become a director. That was why she loved seeing films. She told me her father was a writer and would rent a projector (放映机) on her birthday. I was touched by her father’s love. I was curious what her father was like.

Carlos and Maya dreamed of becoming space explorers.

On their way home, Carlos and Maya saw a spaceship in the window of a toy store. They went inside the store to see how much it cost. They saw the price and it was too expensive. They tried to pool their money together but it still wasn’t enough.

They left the store sad and disappointed. Carlos suddenly realized that his birthday was coming up. Maybe he could ask their parents to buy the spaceship as a gift for his birthday.

When they got home, Carlos ran straight to their mother and told her what he wanted for his birthday.

Their family didn’t have much when it came to money. So, when their dad stopped by the store to see the toy that Carlos wanted, he found it was too expensive. They couldn’t afford it.

On the day of his birthday, Carlos got up early, excited to see his gift. But when he got to the living room, he saw a spaceship that was made out of a cardboard box. His dad had made it for him.   It had wings on each side and had enough space to ride in. It was a spaceship but it wasn’t what he wanted.

Tears flowed (流) from Carlos’ eyes and he ran back to his room. Maya had just woken up and saw their mom knocking on the door and asking Carlos to come out. But he didn’t want to.

Maya got to the living room but couldn’t see the spaceship they had seen, only the cardboard box. She saw their dad beside it, bent down (弯着腰) on one knee with his head down.

Maya didn’t want her brother to be sad on his birthday. So she tried to think of a way to cheer her brother up. She looked at the cardboard spaceship and got an idea.

Carlos didn’t have breakfast and now he was hungry. He was about to get out of bed when he heard a knock on the door. It was Maya. She said that they had a surprise for him.

When Ruth Hagan was 78 years old, she visited her daughter Judy and teenage granddaughter Marcy in California. They headed for their cabin, going forty miles up and down the mountains in their Bronco (野马), winding terrifyingly close to cliffs (悬崖).

After dinner Marcy announced the water tank(水箱) was low and that she would take the Bronco down to the pump and get water. Ruth was nervous about her young granddaughter driving down the narrow dirt road by herself, but Judy reminded her that Marcy had been driving vehicles up there on the ranch(大牧场) roads since she was 12.

“Just be careful, Marcy,” her mother warned. “The cliff side is pretty shaky. Be sure to hug the mountain side.” Fifteen minutes later Judy was still watching when suddenly she screamed. “Oh no! She went over the cliff, Momma! The Bronco and Marcy—they went over! We have to help her! Come on!”

Judy took off running. Ruth ran behind her, but Judy was quickly out of sight. Ruth raced down the steep hill, breathing hard. She ran on and on, down the hill, up the next, trying to catch up with her daughter. It was getting harder and harder to see anything at dusk.

Ruth stopped and looked around. She screamed into the darkness, “Judy, where are you?” Off to her immediate right and down the cliff she heard, “Down here, Mother! Don’t come near the edge! I slipped on loose rocks and fell over. I’m down about twenty feet.”

“Oh, dear God, Judy, what can I do?”

“Just stay back, Momma! I think I can crawl(爬) back up. I saw the white roof of the Bronco when I was falling, Momma, and I heard Marcy calling for help. She’s alive! But she’s way down there in the valley. You have to go back to the cabin and phone for help. Tell them to send a helicopter. We have to get Marcy out!!”

Ruth turned around and started running back the hill she’d just ran awkwardly down. Up the hill, down the next. She had one hill left to climb when she fell on her face. Chest pains took her breath away. She started to sob.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了作者在给自己和孩子们打包午餐时,回想起了自己小时候祖母和母亲给家人打包午餐的故事。

10 . I was packing lunch for my two children and myself when I suddenly began to doubt my judgement. It was so early in the day, it was still dark outside, and I was making sandwiches. So why was I adding this stress to my life? It’s all because of genetics.

I remember my grandmother telling me how, many years ago, she packed leftovers for my grandfather’s lunch. He loved them but always seemed to come home starving. Finally, after much questioning, he confessed he had been giving away half his lunch to a co-worker who had none of his own. From that day forward, my grandmother always sent extra — just in case.

With five kids in school at the same time, my mom didn’t have time to pack lunches. We ate cafeteria food, which was fine with us. In the world of our elementary school, it was not cool to bring your lunch from home.

There was an exception to the no-pack rule, however. As a punishment, we were forced to bring our own lunch for however many days my mom chose to keep us in the depths of ignorance.

My time in hell came in third grade. I had broken school rules. For four days, my noontime meal consisted of a cheese and mustard sandwich, a bag of chips and one lonely cookie. By Friday my mom relented. And although I still brought my lunch from home, she packed it for me.

That afternoon I opened my lunchbox to find my favorite egg salad sandwich, a nectarine and a whole giant jellyroll with a note taped on top: “Just in case you want to share.”

To my 10-year-old eyes, that jellyroll looked big enough to feed the world. I was in heaven as I offered slice after slice to my friends. It was the best lunch of my life.

1. Why did the author hold the tradition to pack lunch for her children?
A.Because it can help the author save much money.
B.Because children just don’t want to eat outside.
C.Because it was passed down generation to generation.
D.Because the author was facing the stress of life.
2. What kind of person was the author’s grandfather and grandmother according to paragraph 2?
A.Hardworking and honest.B.Warm-hearted and caring.
C.Careful and traditional.D.Considerate and humorous.
3. How do you understand the underlined word “relented” in paragraph 5?
A.Became less angry.B.Got worried.
C.Became rich.D.Had more confidence.
4. What can we conclude about the author’s children
A.They may work harder at school.
B.They may make her feel stressed about their schoolwork.
C.They may dislike their homemade lunch.
D.They may share their lunch with other kids.
