1 . My family didn’t talk much shout my grandfather when I was growing up. He had been a doctor in the British Army and served in the First World War. While many families had relatives in the British Army who fought on the front, it wasn’t something you need to talk about with pride. It’s only as an adult then that I have started to look deeper into my grandfather’s life.
After graduating from medical school in 1906,my grandfather worked as a resident surgeon at the Waterford Hospital for 12 month before joining the Royal Army Medical Corps and starting his first tour of India.
Over the next several years,he served in Rawalpindi,Ferozepore,Multan,Rangoon and Mandalay.
The First World War began on July 28,1914 and two weeks later, my grandfather was on active service in France and Belgium. He was captured(俘获)at Landrecies on October 18,1914 and was kept in prison at Sennelager Prisoner of War Camp in Germany. Following his release on June 26,1915,he returned to London.________A month later he was back on active service, first with the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force in Malta, then Gallipoli and then back to France and Belgium25where he served as the officer commanding No. 44 Field Ambulance until near the war’s end in November 1918.
While his army records afford us a timeline on his service, they don’t show much about his experiences on the battlefield. Thankfully; the surviving sketch (素描) of him at the Battle of the Somme and the accompanying caption (说明文字) by the artist Muirhead Bone help to fill in the gaps. The original, entitled“Waiting for the Wounded”, is housed in the Imperial War Museum,London.
When I was a child, a copy of this sketch hung in my parents’ bedroom, but I didn’t know its importance. Now, as I try to know better about my grandfather, it takes on new significance for me.

Last night came the first snow of the year. The trees put on caps overnight and the little town was blanketed with fresh snow. The children had a snow day off from school. For them, the fall of snow was a magical event. Jack could hardly wait to go outside. His mother handed him a scarf, a hat and mitts and suggested he build a snowman.
Jack dressed, got a bucket and collected everything he needed to decorate his snowman. He walked into his front yard, happy to hear the snow crunch under his feet. He first packed some snow and made a very small ball. Then he got on his knees and rolled the snow into a big ball.
At another window, a little girl flattened her nose against the cold window, watching Jack play alone. It was his new neighbour Nancy. Nancy asked her mother if she could go outside and play. Her mother agreed. Immediately, Nancy zipped up her coat, tugged (用力拉上) her boots and ran outside to Jack’s yard. She said hello and asked if she could help him finish his snowman. Jack nodded willingly.
“Okay. What can I do?” asked Nancy.
“I built my snowman’s body with two snowballs. I need to roll one more for its head.” “But snowmen only have two snowballs. One is for the body and one is for the head,” Nancy laughed.
“No, snowmen always have three snowballs,” Jack argued. “I don’t think I need you to help me after all.” He made a small snowball and rolled it away, leaving Nancy alone.
Low in spirits, Nancy thought to herself, “I’m going to make my own.”

An 80-year-old man was sitting on the sofa in his house along with his 45-year-old son. Suddenly a crow (乌鸦) landed on their window.
The father asked his son, “What is this?” The son replied, “This is a crow.”
After a few minutes, the father asked his son for the second time, “What is this?” The son said, “Father, I told you just now. It’s a crow.”
After a little while, the father asked his son the same question for third time, “What is this?” This time, the son was irritated (生气) and said to his father in a low and cold tone, “It’s a crow, a crow.”
After a moment, the father yet again asked his son for the fourth time, “What is this?” This time his son shouted in his father, “Why do you keep asking me the same question again and again? I have told you already, ‘It’s a crow’. Are you not able to understand this?”
A minute later the father went to his room and came back with an old tattered(破旧的) diary, which he had kept since his son was born. On opening a page, he asked his son to read that page. When the read it, the following words were written in the diary:
“Today my little son aged three was sitting with me on the sofa when a crow suddenly landed on the window edge. My son asked me 23 times what it was, and I replied him 23 times that it was a crow. I hugged him lovingly each time he asked me the same question. I didn’t at all feel annoyed, but instead felt a deep affection for my innocent son.”

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________On a Sunday afternoon, Kiana French was having fun fishing with her father and younger sister, not knowing the next minute, they would struggle not to sink in the freezing water. Their 12-foot boat was taking in water little by little, and the wind was picking up. Her father, Gary French, hurried to operate the engine, while Kiana,16, was in the middle with Cierrah, her sister, frightened but still able to keep calm.
Kiana asked Cierrah to take off one of her cowboy boots, with which she got some of the water out. Hard as she tried, that little effort would not help stop the boat sinking. Moments later, the unthinkable happened. The boat was full of water and then it flipped over. Kiana and her sister were dumped in the water. Their father, who had had a surgery six months ago, managed not to be thrown into the water but seemed to have great pain in the chest due to the sudden change.
Kiana quickly put on her life jacket and saw Cierrah’s and her father’s life jackets floating away. She reacted quickly to get them back and held her sister onto the boat. They were so far out in the middle of the lake that they could not see the shore clearly. What’s worse.it was getting harder to stay above the waves. Their father swam over and hugged his two girls. Cierrah crying silently. Kiana heard her beloved sister murmur, “I can’t feel my feet.”
Kiana knew the only thing to do was to get to shore herself and find help. She looked up at her father, exchanging a concerned glance, turned round and swam as hard as she could towards the shore
Fighting against the strong currents and cold wind, she screamed for help at the top of her lungs every three minutes or so. A strong wind blew, and she looked back only to see her sister’s and father’s heads bobbing(浮动)in the water. She burst into tears, thinking her sister and dad were dead, because she was taking too long.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Often, when he came to visit, my grandfather would bring me a present. These were never the sorts of things that other people brought, such as dolls, books or toys. My dolls and toys have been gone for more than half a century, but many of my grandfather’s gifts are still with me.
Once he brought me a little plastic cup. I looked inside, expecting to see something special. But there was only some loose soil in it, which made me disappointed. He smiled at me affectionately. Turning around, he picked up a little teapot from my dolls’ tea set and took me to the kitchen where he filled the little cup with water. Back in the living room, he put it on the windowsill(窗台) and handed me the teapot. “If you promise to put some water in the cup every day, something may happen.” he told me.
At that time, I was only five years old. This whole thing made no sense to me at all. I looked at him doubtfully and asked, “Do I have to water it every day? What will happen?” He nodded to me with encouragement, “Yes, every day, dear.”
And so I promised. At first, curious to see what would happen, I did not mind doing this. But as the days went by and nothing changed, it got harder and harder to remember to put water in the cup. After a week, I asked my grandfather if it was time to stop yet. Shaking his head no, he said, “Every day.” The second week was even harder, and I became regretful of my promise to put water in the cup. When my grandfather came again, I tried to give it back to him, but he refused to take it, saying simply the same words, “Every day.” By the third week, I began to forget to put water in the cup during the day. Often, I would remember only after I had been put to bed and would have to get out of bed and water it in the dark. But I did not miss a single day.

I was told that my duties would include sweeping floors. I smiled and remembered Dad's words. Even though my job was the lowest, it made me feel excited. I saw it as a challenge because it was my first job. I learned to be on time and tried to do everything well. In return, I was treated with respect by doctors, nurses and patients. Each morning I imagined that the dirty dishes would make patients more sick if I were not there to wash them clean. After breakfast was done, I started sweeping the floors of all patient rooms and cleaning the toilets. Though I was tired, I wanted the job to be done well. Hearing people say “That young boy really does a good job”, I was filled with pride.
Working in the hospital taught me that being proud of one's job is important. It does not matter whether the job is sweeping floors or managing a large business. Through every job I have ever had, my father's words have always stayed with me. I was a good cleaner, and now I'm a good manager. I think Dad would be proud of me all the time.
