“Mommy, don’t go,” my threeyearold son screamed as I walked to the door. My fifteenyearold leaned against the kitchen counter with his arms folded across his chest, not screaming, but glaring at me as I pulled his little brother off my legs.
“Are you mad at me too?”
“You spend all your time taking care of other people’s kids, but what about us?” Dylan left angrily.
I was shocked and a little hurt. How could my own child not understand that the work I was doing was saving lives? Then the answer hit me. He didn’t know, because he had never seen what Healing the Children actually did. Dylan had heard the stories of sick children, but had never once looked into the eyes of a child and understood the hard truth—that without our help, the children would likely die.“Get dressed. You are going with me,” I said.
I spent the drive explaining the case of Hector to my son, who pretended to ignore me the entire time. “He’s seven, only weighs thirty pounds and is very sick. He has a heart condition called Tetralogy of Fallot, which could kill him. It is a miracle (奇迹) that he is still alive.”I went on to explain that it took a team of volunteer medical staff to get Hector to the hospital from his remote village and care for him while he was there. Still, Dylan seemed unimpressed.
We stopped at a convenience store for water and snacks. Dylan had one large and one small Slurpee (思乐冰饮料). He said the small one was for Hector. I doubted whether the little guy would be able to drink it, but remained silent. This was the first interest Dylan had shown in being there. I wasn’t about to ruin it.
I stopped at the nurses’ station to check on Hector’s progress while Dylan went to his room. Our patient was recovering physically, but the nurse was concerned that Hector was struggling emotionally. She said, “Kids usually bounce back fast, but he hardly speaks and never smiles.”

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________2 . Love your parents
Even if you think that your parents are mean-spirited at times, loving your parents is a normal and fulfilling (满意的)part of life. You love them for the fact that they created you, raised you, and are in part a source of who you are. Here are some ways to love your parents.
Respect them more and cherish(珍惜)these moments. You can use these moments to learn from them when you're off on your own. It's OK to get angry but angry actions don't help you or your parents. Act calmly, cool off, journal about your feelings, or talk to a friend.
Obey their requests. It will make your attitude better and earn you more respect from them. It may seem like you are going through hell when you don't get what you want or you have to clean. However, you had better remember they keep a roof over your head when it's cold, raining, snowing, or too hot. Understand that parents are human beings and make mistakes.
Keep company with them. Do things with your parents like watching TV, or go somewhere with them.

6 . Sally and I founded Armadillo & Co. almost 10 years ago. From the start, we’ve poured our hearts into making the business sustainable (可持续发展的). We only use natural or recycled materials, and every step of the dyeing (染色), spinning, weaving, and finishing process is done by hand using techniques that have been handed down through generations. As a result, each carpet is truly unique and full of soul, like a modern artwork.
The other concept of our company is social responsibility. We ensure our weavers are paid fair wages, and we’re a member of Care & Fair. For the last six years, we’ve also sponsored(赞助) a local primary school attended by many of our staff’s children. Each purchase of one of our carpets goes toward paying for the teachers’ salaries, uniforms, textbooks and regular health and eye checks. This year we’re launching a scholarship program to help the highest performing girls complete their secondary education. We’re as devoted to giving back as we are to making beautiful products.
I think the biggest challenge in my career is the balance between life and work. Many women struggle with this, especially mothers. My three children are so young, and my husband works and travels a lot, which is even more challenging. Meanwhile, time difference is a big challenge — our team is spread across the globe, which means long working hours on Skype or in the air travelling. It can also be difficult to switch off or draw the line when you see an opportunity to do more or do better, but it’s important to set aside some time for rest.
I’m fortunate to work with Sally because we perfectly complement (补足) each other. I’m all about the big picture while she’s much more into the finer details. I’m the accelerator(油门), and she’s the brake. Separately we’d be a disaster, but together it’s a really strong, symbiotic (共生的), and respectful relationship.”

Recently, 16-year-old Jack found himself troubled his parents, especially his mom. They perhaps just cared too much, always nagging, reminding him about everything ,worrying about the smallest things, sometimes even forbidding him to hang out with friends, which, of course, caused tons of stress for Jack. Feeling like a bird caged, he desperately longed for freedom and even thought of running away from home, but somehow, an unknown kind of guilt stopped him to do so.
The suffering had seemingly gone on for ages and become so much that it was almost unbearable. Then one morning at the dinner table, the family were having breakfast when it struck Jack that he had to go to school in advance because of some earlier arrangements in school.
“Mom and dad, I gotta go.” he said and quickly picked up his school bag.
“But you haven’t finished your food” his mother responded, acute anxiety obvious on her face.
“I’m running out of time and I will explain it later. ” Jack got impatient.
“It won’t take you....”
“Bang”, before she could finish, Jack had stormed out of front door, slamming the door shut, leaving his father and mother stricken dumb.
That night, Jack just locked himself up in his room. Sadness, anger, helplessness, disappointment and many other untold miserable feelings kept flooding over him. However his father and mother tried to talking to him, he wouldn't open the door. Unable to fall asleep, he turned on his computer and logged on to his Instagram account, where he randomly viewed and mindlessly liked his friends’ photos—hundreds of them, all were the sort that overflowed with real happiness and pleasure. “Why is the whole world all so happy except me?” Jack thought to himself and sighed heavily. Just then, a strange screen name caught his eyes. “How could someone give herself such an old-fashioned name ‘Troubled Sally’? and how come she is on my friend list?” he thought doubtfully. Driven by curiosity, he decided to investigate.
