4 . On a busy Saturday, I was at the mall with my mom. The mall was alive with the chatter of people and the sound of music. Everywhere I looked, there were people dressed in nice clothes, laughing and chatting with their friends.

My mom, on the other hand, wore a simple dress and old shoes. Her clothes looked worn out compared to the others’. As we walked past store windows, I couldn’t help but notice the difference. I saw young girls in bright dresses and boys in tidy shirts. They looked so modern and confident.

Feeling a bit out of place, I tried to pull my mom towards less crowded areas. I didn’t want anyone to notice us or, more specifically, notice her. It wasn’t because I wasn’t proud of my mom. I just felt she deserved better.

As we walked around, we entered a store with beautiful clothes. The fabrics (面料) felt soft, and the designs were fashionable. My mom’s eyes lit up when she saw a lovely sweater. “This would look great on you,” she said with a smile.

I checked the price tag and was shocked. It was much too expensive for us. I knew my mom worked hard to make ends meet. Every penny was made use of in our life. Yet, here she was, willing to spend on a sweater for me.

Looking at her, I realized something. My mom might not have the beautiful clothes or the latest accessories (配饰), but she had a heart of gold. She always put me first, even if it meant giving up her own wants.

Suddenly, I felt a wave of warmth. I hugged her tightly. “Mom, I don’t need the sweater. I just need you,” I whispered. She smiled, “I know, dear. But it’s nice to have dreams sometimes, right?” We left the store, hand in hand, feeling wealthier than ever.

4. Which of the following would be the best title for the story?

In 1989, an 8. 2 earthquake almost flattened (夷为平地) San Francisco, killing over 30. 000 people in less than four minutes.

In the middle of the chaos. a father left his wife securely at home and rushed to the school where his son was supposed to be, only to discover that the building was as flat as a pancake.

As he looked at the pile of debris (废墟) that once was the school, tears began to fill his eyes. After the initial sadness and shock, he remembered the promise he had made to his son: “No matter what, I’ll always be there for you!” Remembering his son’s classroom would be in the back right corner of the building, he rushed there and started digging through the stone.

As he was digging, other parents arrived, clapping hands to their chests, saying, “My son!” “My daughter!” Other well-meaning parents tried to pull him off what was left of the school, saying, “It’s too late!” “They’re dead!?”“You’re just going to make things worse!”

To each parent he answered with one line “Are you going to help me now?” And then he kept digging for his son, stone by stone.

The fire chief (消防队长) showed up and tried to pull him off the school’s debris, saying, “Fires are breaking out. Explosions are happening everywhere. You’re in danger. We’ll take care of it. Go home. “This loving, caring American father asked, “Are you going to help me now?”

The police came and said, “You’re angry, mad and it’s over. You put others in danger. Go home. We’ll handle it!” He replied, “Are you going to help me now?” No one helped. Courageously he dug alone because he needed to know for himself: “Is my boy alive or is he dead?”

My mom dropped me off at the school gates about five minutes before the bell. A little blonde girl got dropped off at the same time and started waving (招手) at me. 10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

The MP3 has become a new fashion on campus. I had long dreamed of owning a MP3. The more MP3 owners were on campus, the stronger my desire (渴望) became. Finally, during one of my monthly visits home, I begged my parents to let me buy one, “Dad, Mom, I ... I want to buy a MP3 ... , the one for …”

I swallowed (吞咽) the rest of my words. Did I really need to explain what a MP3 was? Surely everybody knew!

At first there was no response from my parents. But my little brother replied eagerly, “Me too!”

Then finally my dad spoke, “What! What is it for? This little stuff breaks down soon after you get it! It’s an absolutely useless expense (花费) …”

Then, I had an idea. When the summer vacation came, I lied to my parents that I couldn’t stay at home, because the school had supplementary (附加的) programs. As a result, I earned my money for a new MP3 through my part-time job.

I was at home the night before my new school when Mom came into my room. She sat on my bed, and patted me on the shoulder. Then she handed me a small box. “Take this. Don’t tell your father ... Now, study hard, okay?” she said softly.

“Mom, how did you ... ?” I asked.

“It’s from my own savings. Your father doesn’t know.” I sat alone for a long time with my new MP3, weeping (哭泣) silently.

When I went back to school, I decided to give up my part-time job so that I could study harder for my parents, for my dream. My motivation (动机) to study has never been so strong.
