1 . For many runners, a marathon can often be a challenge — but sometimes what gets a runner through the tough 26.2 miles is looking out into the crowd and seeing his or her loved one holding up a sign and shouting words of encouragement. For one mom, though, her loved one was a bit more hands-on.

While running the REVEL Big Cottonwood Marathon in Salt Lake City, Courtney Rich, a self-taught baker and mother of two, was beginning to run out of energy just yards from the end when she was suddenly joined by her 10-year-old daughter, Avery.

The touching moment, caught on video and posted on social media, shows Avery running to her mother’s side to support her as she approached the end of the race. Rich’s face lit up when Avery joined her and helped her cross the finish line.

Rich later said in the video’s caption that being joined by her daughter to finish the race was “a moment I hope neither of us ever forget”. Rich said that her daughter could tell she was struggling after a phone call near the end of the race. “She knew I had struggled the last few miles,” Rich said. “She saw tears in my eyes when I called on mile 24.”

In the video, Rich’s facial expression changes from tiredness to a smile after seeing her daughter emerge from the crowd to join her. Then, Rich and her daughter ran hand-in-hand to the finish line. “Nothing could have prepared me for the moment my 10-year-old daughter would jump out of the crowd and run with me to the finish line,” she said. When the race was done, the two hugged each other at the finish line. The video ends with a final caption, “And then she just held me. She held me.”

In the past, the REVEL Big Cottonwood Marathon has had other memorable moments of mothers caring for their children, but perhaps not as hands-on as this one.

6 . At the back of our house there was half a mu of vacant land. “It’s a pity to let it go to waste like that,” Mother said. “Since you are all so fond of peanuts, let us open it up and make it a peanut garden.” At that my brother, sister and I were all delighted and so were the young housemaids. And then some went to buy seeds, some began to dig up the ground and others watered it and, in a couple of months, we had a harvest!

“Let us have a harvest festival tonight to celebrate,” Mother suggested, “and ask Dad to join us for a taste of our fresh peanuts. What do you say?” We all agreed, of course. Mother cooked the peanuts in a variety of styles and told us to go to the garden for the celebration.

The weather was not very good that night but, to our great delight, even Father put in an appearance. “Do you like peanuts?” Father asked.

“Yes!” We all answered eagerly.

“But who can tell me what is good about peanuts?”.

“They taste very delicious,” my sister took the lead.

“They can be made into oil,” my elder brother followed.

“They are inexpensive,” I said. “Almost everyone can afford them and everyone enjoys eating them. I think that's what is good about peanuts.”

“In fact there are quantities of good points of peanuts,” Father said, “but one thing I do appreciate is particularly good about them. Unlike apples, peaches and pomegranates that hang their bright and beautiful fruits up on the branches, attracting your admiration, peanuts lie buried in the soil, waiting until they are ripe before letting people dig them up. And you can't tell whether they bear fruits or not just by their stems above ground.”

We all agreed and Mother nodded her head, too. “So you should try to be like the peanuts,” Father went on, “because they are neither grand nor beautiful, but useful.” “That is what I expect of you all.”

We stayed up late that night, eating all the peanuts Mother had cooked for us. But Father's words remained rooted in my mind till this day.

1. How many good points about peanuts are mentioned in this passage?
A.2.B.3.C.4.D.5.
2. What did Father want his children to do in the future?
A.To plant peanuts.B.To hold more celebration gatherings.
C.To show off their abilities.D.To be useful instead of seeking fame.
3. How did Father tell the good quality about peanuts?
A.By examples.B.By comparison.C.By explanation.D.By pictures.
4. What can be inferred from the passage?
A.The family was too poor to afford other fruits.B.Father seldom joined them in such activities.
C.Father didn't like eating apples or peaches.D.The peanuts are too shy to show their fruits.

7 . It was the day after Halloween when my grandmother was admitted to the hospital with the worst headache she'd ever had. While posing in our costumes the night before, we knew something was wrong, just not how wrong.

Grandma's house was the central gathering place of my family, Sunday lunches, birthday dinners, Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas—all were our traditions, with her as hostess. While my parents were busy running their small business, there were many nights when Grandma fed me and put me to bed in her spare room, until they came to get me. I spent my summers at Grandma's and I went everywhere with her. I couldn't imagine a time when she wouldn't be around me.

Then November 1, 1991 began her month-long stay in the hospital—she suffered from a rare infection called nocardia asteroides. After being born in the year of the Great Depression, living through World War II, raising three kids, and being widowed at the age of 48, Grandma never expected to live into her seventies. The infection in her brain seemed to confirm that she wasn't long for this world. But that's not the end of her story. A team of doctors successfully removed the abscess(脓肿), and Grandma even made it into a local medical journal. Her doctor called her "the brain lady".

Grandma celebrated her 85th birthday in March this year. In the almost 23 years since her recovery, she's seen two of her four grandchildren get married and welcomed three great-grandsons. Although they damage something in her house, she loves it when my two boys come over. And while I know they make her day, seeing her love blossom for another generation makes my day too. Happy Grandparents' Day to my amazing grandmother!

8 . On March 2, at the meeting held ahead of the yearly session of the CPPCC National Committee(全国政协大会), interpreter(口译员) Yao Mengyao caught the attention of many with her “quick reaction and correct translation, ”Xinhua noted.

Yao began her studies in English in primary school where she would listen to English tapes.

She often spoke to her teacher about English-related topics that were not limited to the ones in her textbooks, “They were always very professional uncommon topics, ”said Yao’s senior school teacher Shen Yingzi.

Like Yao, Zhang Lu is a regular interpreter for China's top leaders, including Premier Li Keqing and former Premier Wen Jiabao. Her effortless but on-point translations of ancient poems mentioned by former Premier Wen won praise.

So how do interpreters reach their top positions?

The reason for their success is largely hard work. Other than when they go out on visits with Chinese leaders, the interpreters follow a very strict schedule. Zhang called this schedule“an unshakable plan”. They listen to foreign media such as BBC, VOA or CNN through TV or radio for their training.

It is reported that a month before the two sessions(两会), the interpreters get notice of the spokesperson they are going to interpret for. They then make full use of this month to prepare themselves. They try to predict the questions that might be asked and consider the sayings the spokesperson might use when they answer the questions.

In truth, there is no secret to their success: It’s all a matter of skill and hard work.

1. What can be inferred from the second paragraph?
A.Yao tried to make a speech in English.B.The textbooks didn't interest yao at all.
C.Yao showed a strong interest in English.D.The teacher got tired of Yao's endless questions.
2. Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined word in Paragraph 3?
A.Serious.B.Ordinary.C.Organized.D.Frequent.
3. What should interpreters try to do before the two sessions?
A.Make a schedule for foreign visits.B.Predict the questions to be asked.
C.Go out on visits with Chinese leaders.D.Discuss with their teammates.
4. How do the interpreters reach the top positions?
