Jane was waiting in the corridor outside her class. She had two exams that day and physics was the first. She really hated physics. Her friend Terry looked at her from the front of the line, and then looked away quickly. Jane thought she looked guilty. She didn’t have a problem with physics. She didn’t have a problem with anything… Miss Perfect!
“Hi, Jane, it’s your favorite exam today,” said Maya, laughing as she joined the line. Terry was looking at Jane again. “So what’s wrong with her?” asked Maya. “I thought you were friends.” “Yes, so did I,” said Jane. “but she hasn’t spoken to me for two weeks now. She promised to help me review for the physics exam too, but then she ignored all my calls and texts. She seemed to have forgotten who her friends are!” said Jane angrily. “Are you listening to me?” Mr. Richard was talking to the class and the other students were going into the exam room. Jane gave Maya a worried look and followed them.
Jane couldn’t answer question number five. She looked up and saw Terry sitting two rows in front of her. Jane couldn’t believe it! Terry was holding her phone on her knee under the table and reading from it. Is that how Terry always got such good grades? She felt really angry at Terry, but she didn’t know what to do. She thought about telling the teacher, but what would everyone else think of her? “Stop writing and put your pens down,” said Mr. Richard as he started as he started to collect the exam papers.
Jane wanted to talk to Terry at lunch time, but she couldn’t find her anywhere. The next exam was history. That was Jane’s favorite subject but she wasn’t feeling good. She didn’t know what to do about Terry. “It wasn’t fair!” she thought. “Terry was getting good grades by cheating all the time.” thought Jane. Just then, Mr. Richard walked past her table. “Mr. Richard…”

“I'm going to school today!” announced my little brother, Trevor, jumping to the breakfast table. He was already wearing his backpack, which had been washed by himself carefully, just for this great day.
Mom looked at me “Isn’t it great, Annie? You’ll both be at the same school!”
Actually, it was not great at all. School used to feel like my thing. Now Trevor was going to be in my old classroom, with my old teacher. At least, second grade was in a different part of the building. I felt a burst of mixture of excitement and displeasure. I knew that Trevor’s expectation and excitement were more than mine.
“Can I play with you?” he asked as Mom dropped us off when we arrived at the school. I shook my head, “School rules, remember? You have to play in the kindergarten area. I stay on the big playground.” Trevor gave me no reply but a determined look.
I led him to his classroom, watching him explore and locate his own seat. “Hi, Mrs. Morena,” I said as I pulled my brother forward. “This is my brother Trevor.” “Hello, Trevor!” Mrs. Morena smiled. “Want to meet the other kids?” Trevor nodded and let go of my hand. Then, I ran out of the door in a flash. I didn’t know where he was now. Nor did I care.
When the bell rang, the teacher gave me a seat by an open window, where I could see the kindergarten room if I looked outside. I faced forward. The teacher had begun the lecture. It was what the teacher was talking that attracted me the most. And I told myself again and again that all went on as before, as usual, as if Trevor had not been to school.
Between classes, I had forgotten all about Trevor. It was great to be back at school! I was running to the slide (滑梯) when a loud cry rang out across the playground.

The whole class burst out laughing as Mohi rushed into the classroom. He was a strange sight. His half-buttoned white shirt showed a red striped nightclothes underneath, and instead of white school shoes, he wore a pair of bright green sandals (凉鞋) that were two sizes too big. The physics teacher’s hand froze in the middle of writing something on the blackboard. Mohi said in very low voice, “Sorry, teacher,” and went to his seat. Mr. Tan glared at the rest of the students. The laughter quickly faded.
Mohi’s classmates always looked forward to Mondays. Nine times out of ten, they would be entertained by Mohi’s late arrival and his strange appearance which usually included inappropriate clothing.
Mohi lived just a street away from the school. He walked to school daily. Students passing by in buses would call his name together just to see him jump and stop in his tracks. When he spotted the merry bunch in the bus, he would wave good-naturedly. Although Mohi was likable, he was too lost in his own thoughts to make friends. His classmates found him amusing but they ignored him most of the time. Only Hamed, who sat next to Mohi, tried to be his friend.
The following Monday, Mohi did not turn up at school. His classmates were a little disappointed but quickly forgot about him. After school, Hamed decided to walk over to Mohi’s house to check on him. As he approached the gate, he could hear violin music. Mohi must be listening to music, he thought. The gate was not locked. Hamed let himself in. He called Mohi’s name a few times but there was no response. The music played on. Hamed peered (窥视) in through a window. His eyes widened in surprise. In the middle of the living room, Mohi was playing the violin. His eyes were closed in concentration as he drew the bow over the strings expertly. He played so flawlessly that it sounded like a recording. Hamed left quietly.

4 . Picture a proposal (求婚) and romance, and rings come to mind - not a conversation about organs. But when Craig asked Sadie to marry him in Naples in 2018, it was kidneys that resulted in the talk of marriage.
It had all started with snoring. When the couple moved in together in 2010, Sadie realized Craig's night-time noises were a problem. At first it didn't seem to be serious. But after months of examinations, he was diagnosed as IgA Nephropathy, a chronic kidney disease, says Sadie. “It was incurable and would have a long-term impact on his health. “The diagnosis was a bomb - we were facing the fact that this would change his life.”
Unfortunately, by 2016 his condition was worsening. Craig recalls: “I was getting incredibly tired. I'd come home from work and fall on the sofa, asleep for hours." Still, it came as a huge shock to them both when in March 2019 the couple were told that Craig had two options: a kidney transplant or dialysis.
Sadie remembers. “This wasn't a decision for five years' time - he had to make it now. He's Australian, So all his family were on the other side of the world. My response was clear and immediate - you can have one of mine.”
Craig says: “When I saw her reply, I was struck with guilt. Sadie is such a selfless person, I wasn't surprised that she wanted to help.” After witnessing the terrifying reality of dialysis, Sadie became more determined to do so.
Sadly, because they had different blood types, Sadie couldn't be a direct donor but then they learned about the Kidney Sharing Scheme. “It's a bit like a kidney swap-shop based on blood, tissue and antibody tests,” says Sadie. Then finally, with the help of the scheme, in May 2019, they were matched. On July 10, 2019, they both checked into hospital and both operations went smooth.
“Sadie is the most amazing, selfless person I’ve ever met. Now we can live life again, together, and it’s all because of her.” Craig says.

5 . Tiffany McDaniel on the ways her mother inspires her literary career
Tiffany McDaniel's mother made her an eager reader, and now she's the subject of her latest novel. In Betty, the author traces her mother's childhood and the Cherokee heritage that defined it. Below, the author tells us her trade secrets, from her earliest attempts to put pen to paper to why it meant so much to write about her own family.
What is the first thing ever that you remember writing?
I've been writing since I was a kid old enough to grasp the pen, so I can't remember the very first thing I ever wrote. But one of those very early books would have been The Big Bad Toothbrush. I wrote it when I was six. It was about two toothbrushes who were twins, one of which was evil. I still have the book on my shelf, and always remember the opening lines, “Once there was a toothbrush I was a mean one, it was.” The evil toothbrush would do things like turn people's teeth black. The story ended with the toothbrush going to toothbrush heaven.
What is the last book that made you cry?
I have a pretty high tolerance level, so I've never cried during a novel, but children's picture books that feature the loss of animals are ones that stay with me like The Day Tiger Rose Said Goodbye And books like The Giving Tree and Donkey, Donkey.
Which book is at the top of your current To-Read list?
I read more non-fiction than I do fiction. Among those to read is a book about the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and another book about the birth and final fate of the sun. Science, and planetary science, in particular, is fascinating to me.
Which book made you a forever reader?
Growing up, my mother Betty made sure books and reading were part of our lives. From the time my sisters and I were born, Mom was reading to us. And it became a bedtime habit as we grew older. That's what made me a forever reader. Having had a mother who made sure that from the time we were kids, we understood the importance of story.
What is your favorite part of this Betty?
My favorite part is that it features my mother Betty and her story. I wrote Betty to celebrate the voices of my family, and in particular the voices of the women in my family. This book is a personal journey for me and the generations who have come before me. It's why this book will always cast ripples in my life.

Yours,
Li Hua
We often take for granted the very things that most deserve our gratitude.
Growing up, I wanted to be just like my mom. Kind and caring, she always seemed to make people comfortable in her presence. For years she was a volunteer in our community. I loved going to the local nursing home to help with her until I hit my preteen years. Suddenly, I was too caught up in my adolescent world to worry about helping others.
One particular summer day when I was twelve, Mom came into my room and told me to get up and meet her at the car. I had planned to spend the day at the lake with friends. Why did she have to ruin everything? Eventually, I made my way outside. I imagined the lake water cooling my skin. Annoyed, I climbed into the car and slammed the door shut. I sat in silence, too upset to make a conversation.
“Tasha, would you like to know where we are going?” Mom asked calmly.
“I guess…,” I murmured under my breath.
“Sweetheart, we are going to a children’s shelter, I have been there before and I think it would benefit you,” she explained.
I felt a knot slowly form in my stomach. How was I supposed to help there?
When we reached the shelter, I was rather surprised. It was a large white Victorian home. As we approached the large front porch, wind bells played a calming tune while trees and blossoms welcomed us. Maybe this wasn’t going to be so bad.
Mom rang the doorbell. The door flew open and we were led to the front room, where all of the children were playing. Toys were spread out across the floor. I noticed a baby whose body was scarred with wounds. The majority of the children had noticeable physical scars(伤疤) such as cuts, scratches and burns. What a terrible life they had before they moved here! My heart sank.
As I was looking around, I felt a gentle pull on my shirt.____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I returned to the shelter with Mom several times._______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
10 . We tried so hard to make things better for our kids that we made them worse. For my grandchildren,I’d know better.I’d really like for them to know about hand-me-down clothes and home-made ice cream and leftover meatloaf.I really would.
My cherished boys,I hope you learn humility by surviving failure and that you learn to be honest even when no one is looking.I hope you get a black eye fighting for something you believe in.I hope you have to share a bedroom with your younger brother. And it is all right to draw a line down the middle of the room, but when he wants to crawl under the covers with you because he’s scared,I hope you’ll let him.And when you want to see a Disney movie and your kid brother wants to tag along,I hope you take him.
I hope you have to walk uphill with, your friends and that you live in a town where you can do it safely.I hope you learn to dig in the dirt and read books, and when you learn to use computers, you also learn how to add and subtract in your head.
May you skin your knee climbing a mountain, burn your hand on the stove and stick your tongue on a frozen flagpole(旗杆).I hope you get sick when someone blows smoke in your face.I don’t care if you try beer once, but I hope you won’t like it.
I sure hope you make time to sit on a porch with your grandpa or go fishing with your uncle.I hope your mother punishes you when you throw a baseball through a neighbor’s window, and that she hugs you and kisses you when you give her a plaster of pared mold of your hand.
These things I wish for you—tough times and disappointment, hard work and happiness.
