1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My dad is a truck driver, and when I was little, he was gone most of the time, delivering wire and other livestock(牲畜)supplies around the Midwest. So my mom was almost like a single mother. We lived in a small house in Brighton, Colorado, where we had a big yard with plenty of room for our five dogs and two cats to run around. We moved there on my third birthday. My first memory is our neighbor Arlene handing me strawberries from her garden through a hole in the chain-link fence. She and her husband, Bill, lived next door.

Arlene spent a lot of time working in the garden, and I was always talking to her from our yard. I was a chatter-box(喋喋不休). I think what drew me to Arlene and Bill is that they never got tired of listening to me. I also think Arlene saw a lot of herself in me-we were both lonely and anxious-and that may be why she always took the time to listen to me. Bill too. It was a wonderful connection.

One day, my parents asked Bill and Arlene whether they'd watch me while they went out. This worked well for everyone, so it became a somewhat monthly occurrence. Arlene and Bill didn't have kids. They had a spare room in their house, which became my room. I had boxes of toys and books in that room.

Arlene and I would do crafts together. We were always putting tiny decorations on things. Bill taught me how to ride a bike and later how to drive the lawn tractor(割草机)and eventually a car.

When I was about five, I had an idea. My parents were watching TV when I spit it out, "What if I adopted Bill and Arlene as my grandparents?" My parents said I could go over and ask them for myself.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

“Mom!” 11-year-old Mark cried to his mom, Cindy. “I don’t want to wear the sweater!”

“Please, honey, put it on! We’re already running late!” Cindy said as she packed their suitcases. “But Mom! It’s not even my size. Can I please get something else to wear?”

“Don’t trouble your mom, Mark,” his dad, Luke, said. “We have to leave now.”

Cindy and Luke took out their suitcases and put them into the car. The family were taking a skiing trip to the mountains. Mark sat in the back seat, angry, because he hated the sweater!

It was a red sweater, a bit too big for him, and its sleeves were not even the same size. It was Mark’s birthday gift. Grandma Sandy promised him a video game, but gave him a sweater instead! Mark didn’t like it. He told Grandma by phone that he would never wear it. He didn’t know how hard it had been for her to make the sweater by hand.

Because it was snowing heavily, Luke drove slowly. By the time they arrived at the holiday center, it was late in the evening.

Mark was quite excited about going skiing for the first time. He asked his parents to let him go look around, and they agreed. Mark raced off to a nearby spot and Cindy kept an eye on him. When Luke removed their suitcases, Cindy helped him. Then she noticed Mark was nowhere to be seen.

Worried, Luke and Cindy tried to find him, but failed. They told the manager about the situation. He sent out a few staff members to help look for Mark.

Almost half an hour later, two of the staff observed a hand sticking out behind a tree. They discovered Mark, who was unconscious. He was brought to the hospital soon, but he didn’t wake up until a few hours later.

“It’s a good thing the boy was wearing a large sweater that kept most of his body covered and warm due to its large size. It was a typical case of hypothermia (体温过低),” the doctor said. “Do you remember what happened, Mark?” the doctor asked him.

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

That night, I quarreled with my mother, and then rushed out of the house. While on the road, I remembered that I did not have any money in my pocket. I did not even take my cell phone with me to make a call home.

At the same time, I went through a noodle shop, and I suddenly felt very hungry. I wished for a bowl of noodles, but I had no money!

The seller saw me standing before the counter and asked, “Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles?”

“Oh, yes... but I don’t have money on me...” she replied. “That’s nothing. I’ll treat you today,” said the man, “Come in.”

A few minutes later the owner brought me a steaming bowl of noodles. I thanked the man and started to gobblle (狼吞虎咽) up the delicious food...then I cried silently.

“What is it?” asked the man kindly.

“Nothing. I am just touched by your kindness!” I said as I wiped my tears. “Even a stranger on the street gives me a bowl of noodles, while my mother, after a quarrel, chased me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so mean and cruel!”

Hearing the words, the seller smiled “Girl, do you really think so? I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. why were you not grateful and why did you hurt your mom? You should say sorry to your mom.“

I was really surprised after hearing that.

Why did I not think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel grateful, and my mother has been taking care of me since I was little and I have never felt so, not even a little.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

As a young boy, I was carefree. Every vacation I looked forward to two things—seeing my grandpa and hearing his wonderful stories. My grandpa was a very good storyteller. He had worked various odd jobs when he was young and wove his adventures and misadventures into fantastic tales. These wonderful tales colored my childhood.

As I grew up, I had to admit that Grandpa’s stories went on a little long, even a little boring and gradually lost their magic. However, not wanting to upset him, my brother and I would sometimes take turns sitting in the living room, listening to grandpa tell his stories.

When my grandpa was approaching 91, he suffered from serious memory-loss. It was kind of what doctors called dementia (痴呆), probably the earliest stage of Alzheimer’s disease. Following the doctor’s directions, we moved him into a Sunrise Assisted Living Community, where he could get a better care. After that, grandpa hardly came to our house.

One weekend before my grandpa’s birthday, I came to visit him. Seeing grandpa sitting in his armchair, dull-looking, I was consumed with mixed feelings. I wheeled grandpa to the sunshine in the courtyard, talking to him. He couldn’t express himself clearly and spoke in short bursts, but I listened to him patiently and carefully just as I used to be a little boy.

It was then that I noticed a shadow box with some old and yellowish photos in it. I picked one up, in which my brother, several boys in our neighborhood, and I were playing basketball with grandpa cheering us on twenty years before. My mind flashed back to those beautiful memories. Back then, Grandpa was in good physical condition and we were all wearing basketball jerseys, playing and laughing with abandon. I presented the photo to my grandpa, pointing at each member and reminding him of their names. Incredibly, grandpa could speak out the name of every player. I even caught a soft light in grandpa’s eyes and a smile on his lips.

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整短文。

An 80-year-old man was sitting on the sofa in his house along with his 45-year-old son. Suddenly a crow (乌鸦) landed on their window.

The father asked his son, “What is this?” The son replied, “This is a crow.”

After a few minutes, the father asked his son for the second time, “What is this?” The son said, “Father, I told you just now. It’s a crow.”

After a little while, the father asked his son the same question for third time, “What is this?” This time, the son was irritated (生气) and said to his father in a low and cold tone, “It’s a crow, a crow.”

After a moment, the father yet again asked his son for the fourth time, “What is this?” This time his son shouted in his father, “Why do you keep asking me the same question again and again? I have told you already, ‘It’s a crow’. Are you not able to understand this?”

A minute later the father went to his room and came back with an old tattered(破旧的) diary, which he had kept since his son was born. On opening a page, he asked his son to read that page. When the read it, the following words were written in the diary:

“Today my little son aged three was sitting with me on the sofa when a crow suddenly landed on the window edge. My son asked me 23 times what it was, and I replied him 23 times that it was a crow. I hugged him lovingly each time he asked me the same question. I didn’t at all feel annoyed, but instead felt a deep affection for my innocent son.”

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My heart beat wildly as I stared at my phone screen. I re-read the message from my friend, Jane. Someone had upset her by sharing her personal news: she had been refused by her dream school. Jane had shared the sad news with only a few people. She didn’t know who let the word out, but she was really hurt and disappointed.

I felt so bad. I knew how the news had gotten out because I had been the one to tell someone beyond her closest friends. Honestly, I hadn’t realized she meant to keep it so close to only a few in the first place, but at the same time I’d known it wasn’t a good idea when I started to tell it to someone else.

Did she really not know it was me? It would have been easy to admit what I had done and apologize if her message put the blame, specifically, on me. But it read as though it had been copied and sent to several people. Once again ignoring the right choice, I chose the coward’s (懦夫) way out instead.

“I’m so sorry for what happened to you,” I typed. “How awful that your confidence was broken!”

I hoped that would work. Her reply came back within seconds: “Thank you.”

“It would be okay for me to remain anonymous (匿名), wouldn’t it?” I thought to myself.

But, deep down, I knew I’d been the one to break faith and hurt her. I was ashamed, not only of my original action, but also because I’d taken a further step in the wrong direction by covering it up.

I felt painful at church on Sunday, sitting in silence all the time. Later, the speaker asked us to examine ourselves and see if anything stood in the way of holding on to our faith, and if so, not to let anything stop us until we cleared it away. Chancing it all — whatever we feared, whatever held us back — would be worth it to make it right.

I knew what stood between me and the right thing: my image.

9 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

In 1985 my parents made the big move from Illinois, to southern Califormia, along with three very tiny children and all their household possessions. My mother had carefully wrapped and packed four boxes of her mother’s hand-painted dinner china. Grandmother had painted this lovely set herself, choosing a forget-me-not pattern (勿忘我图案).

Unfortunately, something happened during the move. One box of the china didn’t make it. It never arrived at our new house. So my mother had only three-quarters of the set — she had plates of different sizes and some serving pieces, but missing were the cups and saucers (茶碟) and the bowls. Often at family gatherings or when we would all sit down for a Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner, my mother would say something about the missing china and how she wished it had survived the trip.

When my mother died I inherited Grandmother’s china. I, too, used the set on many special occasions, and I, too, wondered what had happened to the missing box.

I love to visit flea markets (跳蚤市场), hunting for treasures. It’s great fun to walk up and down the streets early in the morning, watching as the vendors (摊主) spread their wares on the ground.

I hadn’t been to a flea market in over a year when, one Sunday in 2013, I got the itch to go. So I crawled out of bed at 5 a.m., and drove an hour to the Giant Rose Bowl Flea Market in another town. I was looking around and after a couple of hours I was thinking about leaving. I rounded the last corner and took a few steps down the street when I noticed some china spread on the floor. I saw that it was hand-painted china...With forget-me-nots! I raced over to look at it more closely, and picked up a cup and saucer...Forget-me-nots! Exactly like Grandmother’s china, with the same delicate strokes (笔画) and the same thin gold bands around the edges. I looked at the rest of the items-there were the cups! The saucers! The bowls! It was Grandmother’s china!

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文

The whole class burst out laughing as Mohi rushed into the classroom. He was a strange sight. His half-buttoned white shirt showed a red striped nightclothes underneath, and instead of white school shoes, he wore a pair of bright green sandals (凉鞋) that were two sizes too big. The physics teacher’s hand froze in the middle of writing something on the blackboard. Mohi said in very low voice, “Sorry, teacher,” and went to his seat. Mr. Tan glared at the rest of the students. The laughter quickly faded.

Mohi’s classmates always looked forward to Mondays. Nine times out of ten, they would be entertained by Mohi’s late arrival and his strange appearance which usually included inappropriate clothing.

Mohi lived just a street away from the school. He walked to school daily. Students passing by in buses would call his name together just to see him jump and stop in his tracks. When he spotted the merry bunch in the bus, he would wave good-naturedly. Although Mohi was likable, he was too lost in his own thoughts to make friends. His classmates found him amusing but they ignored him most of the time. Only Hamed, who sat next to Mohi, tried to be his friend.

The following Monday, Mohi did not turn up at school. His classmates were a little disappointed but quickly forgot about him. After school, Hamed decided to walk over to Mohi’s house to check on him. As he approached the gate, he could hear violin music. Mohi must be listening to music, he thought. The gate was not locked. Hamed let himself in. He called Mohi’s name a few times but there was no response. The music played on. Hamed peered (窥视) in through a window. His eyes widened in surprise. In the middle of the living room, Mohi was playing the violin. His eyes were closed in concentration as he drew the bow over the strings expertly. He played so flawlessly that it sounded like a recording. Hamed left quietly.
