7 . It was a week after my mom had passed away and I didn’t know how to go on with life. So when I received an e-mail from a friend about a race benefiting cancer research, I ignored it. It seemed to prick (刺痛) my heart, as cancer was the disease that took my mother away from me.

But something about my friend’s words— “I can help organize the whole thing”—stuck with me. I felt obliged (有义务的) to agree. In the weeks to come, I managed to re-enter the world of the living. I checked our team’s website daily, feeling proud each time a donation contributed to our total. I knew my mom would have wanted it that way. She was the type who never got defeated. It was this very spirit that helped me get by.

When the race ended, I noticed the runners all had one thing in common: There were big smiles on their faces. They made it look so rewarding and effortless. I wanted in.

So I enrolled in another race two months later. Considering I could barely run a mile, it was ambitious. But my friend and I made a training plan so I wouldn’t come in last. I followed it religiously and didn’t let anything get in my way.

Running up and down the city’s hills, I was flooded with memories. I had lived there before college and my mother had visited often. I passed Bloomingdale’s, recalling the time she and I had gotten into a screaming argument there.

I was about to beat myself up when I remembered what Mom had said after her diagnosis of cancer. “I don’t want you to feel guilty about anything.” Her paper-thin hands had held me tightly. A weight was lifted from my shoulders.

When the race day arrived, I gave it my all for my mom and for all she had taught me and continued to teach me. As I ran, whenever I felt like slowing down, I pictured her cheering me on.

Crossing the finish line, i was filled with her love and a sense of peace.

1. Why did the author ignore the e-mail in the beginning?
A.She felt it hard to finish the race.B.She had no time to join in the event.
C.She was reminded of her mother’s death.D.She thought the research meaningless.
2. What does the underlined part “religiously” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Optimistically.B.Carelessly.C.Carefully.D.Quickly.
3. Which of the words can best describe the author’s mom?
A.Considerate and polite.B.Strong-willed and caring.
C.Brave and humorous.D.Outgoing and patient.
4. What might be the best title for the passage?
A.The Loss of Sweet Memories: Running With Mom
B.Running With Mom’s memory: A Healing Journey
C.Mom’s Journey of Healing: Racing With Honor
D.In Memory of Mom: An Honored Run

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了老年人和年轻人交朋友给双方都会带来的好处。

8 . When you think of your closest friends, who will come to your mind? Perhaps your college roommates or the neighbor you played with as a child. Regardless of how you met these people, they most likely have one key thing in common:     1     A 2023 study found that, for those aged 21 to 30, over 80 percent in their social circles, were born within five years of them. Moreover, nearly 63 percent of adults have no close friends 15 years older or younger than them.

Spending our time with such a narrow group of people can fuel age segregation and increase our loneliness. These limitations also keep us from other generations’ mindsets and potentially surprising points of connection.     2     Of course, the ones that are older might offer a brief look into the coming years.

A program that runs schools out of senior centers has said a lot about it.     3     Dawn Carr, a sociology professor, said most older people get much from practical help—with new technology, for instance—their younger friends offered.     4     Having fun with someone decades younger definitely takes off their pressure to “act their age”.

5     Lila, aged 75, was proud that her life experiences prepared her to give advice to her young friend with depression, for which the young was grateful. Also, older friends offer more examples of what growing up can look like. If someone’s parents are the only older people they know well, they might fail to picture other possibilities. A greater pool of older friends can help young people create their own blueprint.

A.You befriend those who live around.
B.They’re all roughly the same age as you.
C.Others might find joy in exposure to new ideas.
D.Brought closer, both see more than one benefit.
E.Younger friends can be a reminder of past selves.
F.Forming these kinds of friendship is particularly hard today.
G.Indeed, intergenerational relationship is never a one-way street.

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

When John pulled into his mother’s driveway with his young daughter, Lily, the sight of the familiar lychee (荔枝) tree welcomed them. “Look, Lily,” John said, pointing to the towering tree in the front yard. “It’s the family tree.”

Lily smiled as John treated the tree as if it were a real family member, patting its trunk (树干) affectionately. As they were admiring the tree, the screen door opened and out stepped Grandma Mei, bathed in the warm Florida sunlight. Grandma Mei, who came from the province of Guangdong in China, was known for her green thumb, particularly when it came to lychees.

Seeing her granddaughter, Grandma Mei adjusted her baseball cap and asked if Lily was ready for some lychees. But Lily hesitated, for the fruit’s appearance was unlike any other fruit she had tried before. With a laugh, Grandma Mei gave her a gentle hug. “More lychees for me then, John,” Grandma Mei said.

“Let’s get busy!” John said with enthusiasm, rubbing his hands together. “Family tree’s waiting.”

Hearing Dad calling the tree by name, Lily couldn’t help laughing. “Laugh if you want, Lily, but this tree is really family. On cold nights, before family tree was fully grown, Grandma Mei used to take my blanket and throw it over that tree.” Grandma Mei nodded, adding that she had to protect the tree from bad weather so that it would become a big strong tree and grow fruit for the whole family.

John, eager to start the day’s work, began climbing the tree, determined to harvest the best lychees for the family. Lily watched in amazement, noticing the clusters (簇) of lychees, their skin rough yet inviting.

As John skillfully cut through the branches with a cutter, Lily expressed her concern for the well-being of the tree. John explained to her that cutting the ends of branches won’t hurt family tree. Instead such behaviour made it healthier and stronger.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Lily’s hesitation towards the fruit gradually shifted to curiosity and she wanted to try it.
