1 . Nothing stays the same for long: things and people change.
I grew up on a small farm, where a flock of sheep wandered around the surrounding mountains. My father was not highly educated, but he was smart. He was a man made of leather and chewing tobacco who rarely tried to talk with my brother or me. He was quiet and distant, I might say.
One day I came home and his car was already there.
He was predictably in that chair on his own when I came in.
A.My father never missed work. |
B.I did not like him very much. |
C.He was skillful at any farm work. |
D.He became better after some special treatment. |
E.I’m certainly not glad that my father got sick. |
F.As the disease develops, the person who has it shrinks. |
G.What followed still moves me these decades later |
2 . Even if you think that your parents are mean-spirited(小气的) at times, loving your parents is a normal and fulfilling part of life. You love them for the fact that they create you, raise you, and are in part, a source of who you are.
Tell them you love them every morning. A gentle “good morning” and “I love you” will warm the coldest heart. Remember that they brought you into this world.
Respect them more. It is inevitable that we may disagree with our parents or be dissatisfied with them sometimes. It’s OK to get angry but angry actions don’t help you or your parents. Act calmly, cool off, write down your feelings, or talk to a friend.
Some people simply may not be able to love their parents.
A.Forgiveness is the key. |
B.Keep them company. |
C.Here are some ways to love your parents. |
D.Parents will in turn express their love for you. |
E.After these, share your feelings with your parents. |
F.Please remember parents are as important as friends. |
G.There can be realistic reasons for that, for example family violence. |
The power of silence
Joe was an old man aged 75. His children grew up and moved to different cities in pursuit of a good career and future. He lived in a small village carrying the memories of his deceased wife. Joe had 4 grandchildren and they used to visit him during their holidays. And it was the vacation time and Joe was eagerly waiting for his grandchildren. He was making preparations for their arrival, cleaning the house, mowing (修剪) the lawn, rearranging the household items and buying snacks and dresses for the children, etc.
However, in the busy arrangements, he lost his favorite watch, which was given by his late wife when their first child was born. Joe treasured the watch and it became his only companion (伴侣) after his wife’s death. He didn’t realize that he had lost the watch and received the kids happily at home. It was only the next day when he was about to take a bath that he remembered the watch was missing. He was shocked and very upset. His grandchildren asked him why he was so sad and what troubled him.
Joe said, “Dear children, I lost the most precious watch I have ever had in my life. It was gifted by your grandma and I lost it while cleaning the house. I feel like I’m missing my heart.” Joe was in tears and the children promised him that they would find the watch for him.
One granddaughter, Mary, asked, “Grandpa, do you remember when you saw the watch last before you lost it?” Joe said, “I guess when I was cleaning the barn.”
The children immediately began to search for the watch in the barn. The barn was full of waste materials, books, broken furniture, etc. They searched for more than three hours with the help of Joe, but failed.

After a fruitless search for the watch, Joe gave up.

She looked much younger than her fifteen years, a worn coat hanging loose above her. We weren’t supposed to take a child, but an emergency call came through that morning. A home was needed for a young girl immediately.
I, together with four children, hurried to get her room ready. The kids were great. Joanne, our second-eldest daughter, did the cleaning and Margaret, Rob and Jeff helped make the bed. I felt my heart pounding in my chest. I was excited, but scared at the same time because I was told an adopted child might give us a lot of trouble.
That afternoon, Trudy arrived with the social worker Mrs. Kline. She stepped into the front hall and stood against the wall. I will never forget the look in her eyes. The first thing that came to my mind was that she looked like a hunted animal. The children moved towards her, and Jeff grabbed her hand and said proudly, “Come and see your room. I helped make your bed.” Trudy pulled back, speechless.
At this point, I stepped towards her and said, "Welcome to our home, Trudy. “She looked at me with such blank eyes. But with her head bowed, she simply said, eyes moving back and forth like a creature looking for a way out, “No, thank you.”
For the first two weeks, Trudy was very quiet. She would come into the kitchen while I was working, and we would discuss school and what she would like to do in the future. Mrs. Kline had given us all the information about her history, but I never mentioned the terrible things that had happened to her.
As the days went by, Trudy became a delight to have around. Very quickly, it seemed like she had always been with us. The girls would sit in each other’s rooms and giggle(咯咯笑) like typical teenagers. It was a sound that warmed my soul. However, when they talked about new clothes, Trudy fell silent again.

6 . My mother used to take me to my grandparents’ in Belgium during the school holidays. While I would play chess with my grandfather, he would tell me stories about growing up, falling in love, and travelling around the world.
I didn’t realize the importance of preserving memories until my grandfather passed away, which ultimately changed my outlook on remembering our loved ones and the stories we share. I thought about solutions to help other people record the precious memories for those they love—before it’s too late. So I began matching ghostwriters (代笔人) to clients to help them write a book as smoothly and beautifully as possible, and Story Terrace was born.
Since then, we have explored the power of stories and their ability to connect us with our past and make sense of the present. It has been documented that increased family connection is significantly linked to less loneliness. Learning more about one’s family history, however, has been linked to boosting emotional health, increasing compassion and providing a deeper sense of cultures and traditions.
What we have found through our own research is that so many of us have missed out on the opportunity to explore our origins. 56 percent of Brits agreed that much of their family history is lost because they are no longer able to speak with the person who knows the most about it. A further 51 percent expressed regret as they wished they could tell their younger self to document their family’s life story, feeling that most of it had been forgotten. But when it comes to telling these stories, many don’t know where to begin.
We have seen numerous times when people come to us with random journal entries and notes from over the years, and these can be developed into a wonderful work of art that can be passed down for generations to come.
Half of the projects we see at StoryTerrace are heritage stories, with family occupying a dominant theme for most stories. Alongside this, common themes we see are of course love, overcoming challenges, settling in new surroundings and so on. However, family is a thread that always ties these together.

I like staying overnight at my Gramma’s house — that is, until Gramma starts telling me how wonderful my cousin Maya is. Then it’s Maya this and Maya that until I don’t ever want to hear another word about her.
That’s why I wasn’t too excited when Gramma called me on the phone to “come on over and bring your pajamas.” When I got there, it was worse than I’d expected. There, in Grandpa’s big leather rocker, sat Maya, all dressed up and formal-looking and wearing fancy shoes as if she’d just been to a party.
“Surprise, Kristen!” Gramma said. “Your cousin Maya and her parents have traveled in from the East Coast on business. Maya gets to stay with us this afternoon.” Gramma chattered away about how excited she’d been for this surprise get-together, and how cousins ought to get to know each other better.
I hung my baseball cap in the closet and set my backpack by the stairway, all the time smiling and nodding as if I’d been waiting forever for this chance to spend an afternoon with Maya. Grandpa’s chair squawked (咯咯叫) as Maya rocked back and forth. It’s the chair I like best in the house, the one I usually sit in. I sat down on the sofa across from her.
Shortly, Gramma went off to the kitchen to “see about some lunch,” she’d said. That left me stuck in the living room with rocking Maya.
She was still small but taller than I’d remembered her from her last visit four years ago. She was good at small talk, though, and was chatting away about how nice it was to see me again. But I could tell that she didn’t really think so. The last time she was here, we’d had hours of fun together building caves out of Gramma’s sofa pillows.
After that, I’d heard about her only through Gramma’s tales. Maya taking piano lessons. Maya learning math. Maya, Maya, Maya. Now Maya was here, looking great with the latest haircut and a fancy dress.

Every visit starts the same. First she rings the doorbell. Then Chris jumps down the stairs.Jamie runs to open the door. And every time,Gramma Goodie has gifts. But the kids never know what she’ll bring.
Sometimes it’s something you need, like socks or underwear. Sometimes it’s movie tickets or a giant teddy bear.It could be a kite or a stuffed (填充的) baby kangaroo. It could be a lollipop (棒棒糖) that turns your tongue blue.
Well, one Sunday, Gramma rang the doorbell. Chris hurried down the stairs. And Jamie opened the door.
“Hello, my darlings,” Gramma Goodie said with a smile. “Look what I have for you.” She pulled out a pack of cards, and they played “Go fish” all afternoon. At the end of the day, Gramma gave the kids kisses. Then she said her good-byes.
As she drove away,Chris and Jamie heard their parents talking. They said that Gramma Goodie’s birthday was next Sunday. They were going to plan a special dinner and bake a delicious cake for her birthday surprise.
“Gramma Goodie has a birthday?” they thought. Both were a little puzzled.Grown-ups have birthdays? Who in the world knew?
“Well, we have to get her a gift,” Jamie said.
“But what?” asked Chris. “Gramma Goodie has almost EVERYTHING!”
Jamie thought about scarves and flowers. But Gramma had plenty of scarves and a huge rose garden. Chris thought about books, pillows and photo albums. A diary? She had one.An umbrella? She had that too. A radio? There is one in her kitchen. Oh, what would Chris and Jamie do? They spent all week thinking.
On Sunday, the doorbell rang.

When I learned she had Alzheimer’s, my hope for reconciliation(言归于好) and forgiveness disappeared — along with her abilities to think.
But the world of Alzheimer’s is full of surprises! As Mom’s disease progressed, the ways I had disappointed her disappeared from her consciousness, and our struggles over my healthy life choices that differed from hers effortlessly ended. In her “now,” I was her kind, loving companion.
My faithful presence was all that mattered to her, and for the first time in my life, I felt wholeheartedly accepted by my mom -just exactly as I am. The wounds from the past began to heal in the arms of a mother who loved me in the present.
For our relationship to truly heal, my acceptance of Mom was also essential. Having learned about the process of decline determined by Alzheimer’s, I acknowledged her limitations. I let go of expecting her to be the mother I had always wanted, and accepted the mother wholeheartedly she now was. After doing this, I noticed that she had, in many ways, become the mother I needed.
Because I didn’t expect, demand, or want Mom to be anyone other than who she was at each moment, she became the one person who could never let me down. I gratefully received whatever she offered, not asking for more. From this viewpoint, I realized just how much Mom was still able to give — including important things a daughter needs from her mother. For example, I trusted that she would be available to me (she was living in a secure memory care unit) whenever I was sad or stressed and needed a hug — from my Mom. She was always happy to see me. Always. And she let me know that I was appreciated — through looks, smiles, touches, and sounds.

Perhaps Mom lacked the ability to intentionally mother me in these ways.
