1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I was in my room, unwilling to head to the community theatre with “my brother” Henry. He was just adopted by my parents recently. I was not in the mood for being onstage with him.

“Kristie, come here,” my mom called. Following her voice, I found her outside the bathroom, holding a wet book. She gave the book a shake. “Henry’s book was in the bathtub. Did you put it there?” She glared at me—something she never did before Henry came to our home. I didn’t wet his book on purpose. Tears of hurt clouded my eyes. Worse still, she promised to buy him a new copy. My heart ached. Henry was stealing my mother’s love. He was ruining my life.

Meanwhile, Henry was just nearby, absorbed in working on a complicated rope knot (绳结) as usual. Why did a boy like him do the girly work? Far from manly!

Soon, it was time to have to set off for the community theatre. As Henry walked ahead of us to the car, my mom took me aside and said in a low voice, “It’s the first time for Henry to be onstage. Be kind to him, Honey.” I nodded but sighed. Being kind didn’t use to be hard. But after Henry moved in, everything felt different. The theatre used to be a special place for my parents and me. With Henry involved, it didn’t seem so special any more.

Finally, it was our stage time. My heart beat wildly. I forgot my annoyance at Henry for a while. As we kids lined up, ready to act out our short play, I realized how loosely I had tied the drawstring (束带) on my skirt. Sure enough, my skirt began to drop. Laughter from the audience could be heard, and even though I was wearing shorts under my skirt, I could feel my face burst into flames. However, my hands were full. If only someone could help me out!

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。主要讲述了作者的父亲,其中重点讲述了作者的父亲与自己的相处方式。

2 . Growing up, I remember my father as a silent, serious man — not the sort of person around whom one could laugh. As a teenager arriving in America, knowing nothing, I wanted a father who could explain the human journey. In college, when friends called home for advice, I would sink into deep depression for what I did not have.

Today, at twenty-seven, I have come to rediscover them in ways that my teenage mind would not allow — as adults and as friends with their own faults and weaknesses.

One night after my move back home, I overheard my father on the telephone. There was some trouble. Later, Dad shared the problem with me. Apparently my legal training had earned me some privileges(特权) in his eyes. I talked through the problem with Dad, analyzing the purposes of the people involved and offering several negotiation skills. He listened patiently before finally admitting, “I can’t think like that. I am a simple man.”

Dad is a brilliant scientist who can deconstruct(解构)the building blocks of nature. Yet human nature is a mystery to him. That night I realized that he was simply not skilled at dealing with people, much less the trouble of a conflicted teenager. It’s not in his nature to understand human desires.

And so, there it was — it was no one’s fault that my father held no interest in human lives while I placed great importance on them. We are at times born more sensitive, wide-eyed, and dreamy than our parents and become more curious and idealistic than them. Dad perhaps never expected me for a child. And I, who knew Dad as an intelligent man, had never understood that his intelligence did not cover all of my feelings.

It has saved me years of questioning and confusion. I now see my parents as people who have other relationships than just Father and Mother. I now ignore their many faults and weaknesses, which once annoyed me.

I now know my parents as friends: people who ask me for advice; people who need my support and understanding. And I’ve come to see my past clearly.

1. What was the author’s impression of her father when she was a teenager?
A.Friendly but irresponsible.B.Intelligent but severe.
C.Cold and forceful.D.Caring and communicative.
2. Why did the author feel depressed when her friends called home?
A.She did not have a phone to call home.
B.Her father did not care about her human journey.
C.Her father was too busy to answer her phone.
D.Her father couldn’t give her proper advice.
3. After the author overheard her father on the telephone, ______.
A.he blamed her for impoliteness
B.he rediscovered human nature
C.he consulted with her about his problem
D.he changed his attitude towards the author
4. The author realized that ______.
A.her father had too many faults and weaknesses
B.her father was not as intelligent as she had thought
C.her father was not good at interpersonal relationships
D.her father placed too much importance on social activities

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写一段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

A man came home from work late, tired and unhappy, to find his 5—year—old son waiting for him at the door. How the boy wished to have fun with his father at home even for a short time.

“Daddy, may I ask you a question?”

“Yeah sure. what is it?” replied the man.

“Daddy, how much do you make an hour?”

“That’s none of your business. Why do you ask such a thing?” the man said angrily.

“I just want to know. Please tell me. How much do you make an hour?” pleaded the little boy.

“If you must know, I make $20 an hour.”

“Oh,” the little boy replied with the head down.

Looking up, he said. “Daddy, may I please borrow $10?

The father was angry. “If the only reason you asked that is that you can borrow some money to buy a silly toy or some other nonsense, then you march yourself straight to your room and go to bed. Think about why you are being so selfish. I work hard every day for such childish behavior.”

The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door. The man sat down and started to get even angrier about the little boy’s questions. “How dare he ask such questions only to get some money?” he thought to himself.

After about an hour or so, the man calmed down, and started to think: Maybe there was something he really needed to buy with that $10 and he really didn’t ask for money very often. The man went to the door of the little boy’s room and opened the door. “Are you asleep, son?” he asked.

“No, daddy, I’m awake.” replied the boy.

I’ve been thinking. maybe I was too hard on you earlier,” said the man. “It has been a long day and I took out my anger on you. Here’s the $10 you asked for.”

The little boy sat straight up, smiling. “Oh. Thank you, daddy!” he shouted. Then, reaching under his pillow he pulled out some crumpled(皱巴巴的)bills.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文,文章主要讲述作者的父母虽然有经济压力,但仍然支持作者参加法国的班级旅行的故事。

4 . My parents never once spoke of the stress of having to pay for college, but I knew enough to appreciate that it was there. Therefore, when my French teacher announced that she’d be leading an optional class trip to Paris over one of our breaks for those who could come up with the money to do it, I didn’t even bother to raise the issue at home.

Yet one evening my parents sat me down, looking puzzled. My mom had learned about the France trip through my friend’s mom.

“Why didn’t you tell us?” she said.

“Because it’s too much money.”

“That’s actually not for you to decide, Michelle,” my dad said gently, almost offended.

“And how are we supposed to decide, if we don’t even know about it?”

I looked at them both, unsure of what to say. My mother glanced at me, her eyes soft. My father had changed out of his work uniform and into a clean white shirt. They were in their early forties then, married nearly twenty years. Neither one of them had ever vacationed in Europe. They never took beach trips or went out to dinner. They didn’t own a house. We were their investment, me and my brother. Everything went into us.

A few months later, I boarded a flight to Paris with my teacher and a dozen or so of my classmates from Whitney Young. We would stay in a hostel, tour the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower. We’d buy snacks from stands on the street and walk along the banks of the Seine. We’d speak French like a bunch of high school kids from Chicago, but we’d at least speak French.

As the plane pulled away from its gate that day, I looked out my window and back at the airport, knowing that my mother stood somewhere behind its black-glass windows, dressed in her winter coat and waving me on. I remember all the details. I remember the jet engines firing, shockingly loud. And then we were rattling down the runway and beginning to tilt upward as the acceleration seized my chest and pressed me backward into my seat for that strange, in-between moment that comes before finally you feel lifted.

1. Why didn’t the author tell her parents about the France trip?
A.She didn’t get on well with her parents.
B.She thought her parents couldn’t afford it.
C.She wanted lo save money for her college.
D.She had already had plans for the vacation.
2. What are the author’s parents like?
A.Strict and ambitious.B.Devoted but stubborn.
C.Loving and supportive.D.Caring but picky.
3. What would the author do in Paris?
A.Visit a few tourist sites.B.Take French courses.
C.Practice French with local kids.D.Go on a boat tour on the Seine.
4. What does the author want to show by mentioning the take-off of her flight?
A.The eagerness of pursuing her dream.
B.The sadness of leaving her mother.
C.Her nervousness about the future.
D.Her deep impression of the experience.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了牢固的亲子关系可以帮助青少年顺利度过叛逆期,并提出一些可以为青少年和父母创造积极体验的建议。

5 . Raising teenagers can be both difficult and rewarding(有回报的). They are becoming young adults. Almost all teenagers will have some behavioral outbursts(爆发) with their families during this period of life.     1     Here are some ideas that may create positive(积极的) experiences for teens and parents.

Have meals together. Mealtime is when we check in with each other.     2     Eating meals together offers a way for parents and kids to share what is on their minds. It brings families closer by creating trust and understanding to help guide children through the challenges of the teen years.

3     As teens develop their own sense of independence, it gets harder to find time to talk. Talk in the car together, when doing dishes together, or any time you have a chance. Remember that no matter how big their problems seem, what most teens want is love and support. Help them connect with their families and communities. During these years, help teens learn that their words and actions mater.     4     Others may find connection through spiritual communities or from having more responsibilities at home. Connecting with families and communities also helps keep teens safe from riskier activity.

Find time to have fun together! What do you both enjoy? Playing chess? Going to the ballet? Volunteering in your community? Take time to have fun and enjoy each other’s company. No one wants the attention of people they love to be focused only on what not to do. This is true for teenagers, too.     5

A.Talk with your teen.
B.Never try to control your child.
C.Parents have a role in keeping their teens safe.
D.Relaxing together helps them feel loved and valued.
E.This can be hard to do with busy schedules, but it is important.
F.Some teens learn this by playing in music bands or team sports.
G.But strong relationships can help teens and their parents through hard times.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了作者17个月的儿子确诊新冠后,令他们的生活变得非常糟糕。

6 . My son, Toby, 17 months old, has just tested positive for COVID-19. He is the first in our household to test positive, and all the information provided for people in this situation is designed for adults who are(or should be) concerned about protecting their families. Toby, obviously, cannot comprehend such advice. He cannot keep a distance from everybody else, or eat and wash in a separate room. We called 911, and the medic we spoke to agreed that the official guidance didn’t really apply to our situation.

Indeed. Not much we can do. So, here we are, trapped within our four walls with a little baby infected with COVID-19, who continues to climb on us, spit in our faces, love us and hug us. It seems inevitable that we, and our elder son, are going to get COVID now. Not much we can do.

My first reaction, after absorbing his diagnosis, was to cook sausages. I didn’t even know that was my comfort food of choice. Perhaps an afternoon crisis would have caused a different cooking desire? Anyway, a full stomach helped me take stock. Yes, it may now be inevitable that we’re going to contract the very virus we’ve spent a year avoiding, but as long as we don’t contract it at the same time, then, hopefully, one other of us will be available to look after our kids (thus answering my five-year-old’s most pressing concern: “…but who will make the pudding?”).

So, to minimise transmission, we’ve opened all the windows. And we’ve decided to wear face coverings whenever we are with Toby. This decision has been insignificant to him—I imagine he literally cannot remember life before masks—but for me, it’s distressing. I’ve become accustomed to wearing masks in supermarkets and coffee shops, of course, but to actually walk around with half my face covered in my own house is quite another matter—it is telling me that my home has been infected, That it’s no longer a safe space.

And so it was, when I sat down to write this column, that I ended up writing about COVID, which is probably the last thing you wanted to read. Sorry about that. COVID has coloured my thoughts today, even though I know that my wife and children will be fine, and that really we should just be grateful we haven’t passed it on to my grandmother.

I predict there will be more sausages in the morning.

1. By repeating the sentence “Not much we can do” in paragraph 2, the writer implies that ________.
A.he feels inspiredB.he is really helpless
C.he wants professional supportD.he needs to keep a distance from Toby
2. According to the writer, what did sausages bring to him?
A.Appetite.B.Concern.C.Relief.D.Sadness.
3. Why did wearing masks at home distress the writer?
A.It discourages him from writing about COVID.
B.It brings him back to the days before COVID-19
C.It makes him feel at a loss for how to help his son.
D.It is a reminder of what is happening to his family.
4. What can be concluded from the passage?
A.The diagnosis leaves the writer’s family in a tough spot.
B.Being infected with COVID-19 leaves Toby in a bad mood.
C.The writer is sure that his other kids won’t contract the virus.
D.Sausages have long been considered by many to be comfort food

Tom threw himself on the sofa, sighing. Mother’s Day was coming, but he didn’t have a present. “How can I buy a present without any money?” he thought.

Tom picked up the newspaper that was lying on the sofa. He noticed a large advertisement on the front page. The local department store was sponsoring(赞助)a contest. “Tell us why your mom is special and win a beautiful and precious gift for her.” said the advertisement.

“This is perfect!” thought Tom. He ran to his room with the newspaper. After taking a pencil and a blank piece of paper from his desk, he started to write.

“My mom is the best mother in the world. She always makes lunch for me to take to school and she never forgets my dessert. She reads as many books to me before bed as I want her to. She always remembers to check under the bed for monsters(怪兽). And she gives me the best hug, but never in front of my friends, who may laugh at me for hugging my mom.”

Tom liked what he had written. He copied it neatly and got an envelope and a stamp. He ran to the mailbox with his entry(参赛作品). “Mom will love having a special gift,” he thought.

Tom checked his mailbox every day for his prize. Days went by, and then weeks. Soon it was the day before Mother’s Day. Tom still hadn’t heard anything about the contest.

“What am I going to do now?” he wondered. He didn’t have a present, and he didn’t have a gift. And he still didn’t have money.

10 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

My 12th birthday came at last. What a wonderful feeling it was to know that I turned twelve and that I might possibly get the thing I wanted most.

I saw my mom and dad coming towards me with a small box wrapped up (包装) with nice pink paper with flowers on it. When I removed the paper and opened the box, I couldn’t believe my eyes. I had got a cell phone! I ran to give my mom and dad the biggest hug ever, and said, “Thank you! I love you!”

“You’re welcome. We knew this was going to make you happy. But we give you this not only because you have turned twelve but also because you are doing well in school. We expect you to keep getting good grades.”

I said confidently that I would. As soon as I got to school the next morning, I was showing off my phone and asking everyone for their number. It was cool how I got so many contacts (联系人) on the first day. It felt like I didn’t even exist in that class any more. I didn’t pay much attention to the teachers because I was too busy on my phone. I texted my friends, surfed the Internet for stories or played games.

Luckily, I didn’t get caught using it. I had formed a habit of secretly enjoying my phone in class. But I was pretty sure that the teachers did notice that I stopped paying attention to them, because a week later we took a test and I failed. What’s worse, my parents had to sign the test.
