2 . “Anxiety.” The very word invites discomfort. Its effects—shortness of breath, pounding heart, muscle tension—are outright upsetting. But, as a clinician, I find that we tend to miss out on many valuable opportunities presented by this human emotion. In and of itself, anxiety is not deadly, nor is it a disease. Quite the contrary: it is an indicator of brain and sensory health. Once we accept that it is a normal, though uncomfortable, part of life, we can use it to help us.

We all know working out at the gym is hard. By nature, a “good workout” is uncomfortable, since it involves pushing our physical strength past what we can easily do. The sweet spot of exercise is always a somewhat challenging experience. Similarly, if you want to be emotionally stronger, you need to face some tension. For example, one effective treatment for fear is exposure therapy (疗法), which involves gradually encountering things that make one anxious, reducing fear over time.

Humans are social creatures. When my patients learn to open up to their partners about their anxieties, they almost always report a greater sense of emotional closeness. Also, as international relationship expert Sue Johnson teaches, when we express our need for connection during challenging moments (e.g., “I’m having a hard time right now and could really use your support”), it creates greater connection and turns our anxiety into love.

From time to time, we find ourselves at the end of our rope. Our responsibilities pile up, our resources break down, and we feel uncomfortably anxious—what we’re experiencing is called stress. Simply put, the demands placed upon us outweigh our available resources, just like a set of scales (天平) going out of balance. Focusing on work and pretending everything is OK only leads to disastrous results. Medical treatment for stress may function for a while, but it tends to make things worse in the long run. The only solution to deal with stress is to do the mathematics to balance the scales.

3 . Some people can walk into a room and instantly put everyone at ease. Others seem to make teeth clench and eyes roll no matter what they do. A small body of psychology research supports the idea that the way a person tends to make others feel is a consistent and measurable part of his personality.     1    

This concept was first described nearly 10 years ago in a study by Professor Eisenkcraft and Professor Elfenbein, a business professor at Washington University. They put students into groups, had them enroll in all the same classes for a semester, and do every group project together.     2     The researchers found that a significant portion of group members’ emotions could be accounted for by the affective presence of their peers.

    3     If one person feels angry, she may well infect her neighbors with that anger. But affective presence is an effect that one has regardless of one’s own feelings — those with positive affective presence make other people feel good, even if they personally are anxious or sad. And the opposite is true for those with negative affective presence.

Exactly what people are doing that sets others at ease or puts them off hasn’t yet been studied.     4     But Elfenbein suggest that a big part of affective presence may be how people regulate emotions — those of others and their own. The emotional regulation could take the form of finding the positive in a bad situation, which can be healthy. But it could also take the form of suppressing one’s own emotions just to keep other people comfortable, which is less so.

Elfenbein notes that positive affective presence isn’t inherently good, either for the person themselves, or for their relationships with others.     5     And, she says, “You can use your intelligence to cure cancer, but you can also use it to be a criminal mastermind.”

I had £20 with me to get a cheap cup of coffee and my food shopping for a few weeks. So I headed for the coffee shop. While paying, I pulled out the note and a handful of change and realized I could pay without breaking the note, so I put it back in my pocket. It wasn’t until I arrived at the supermarket that I realized the note was gone. What should I do? I was desperate it was the equivalent (相等物) of two weeks of money. My roommates helped me look for the note. However, it was in vain. Finally, I went to school empty-handed.

I regretted telling my parents the school trip, and I was very angry why my mother had no spare time while my father happened to have a vacation. But my father failed to read my mind. He was very happy, whistling a tune along the way.

Though my father didn’t sense my bad mood, the school bus seemed as sad as I was. It drove more and more slowly and finally it stopped on the roadside. The driver got out to check the bus but found nothing wrong. Students and parents on the bus began to whisper about what was happening, worried that the delay might spoil the journey.

    4    . There are longer mood states that last days or months, although most emotions only last a few minutes before they pass. That’s why, if you’re seeking long-term solutions, learning to process emotions is the only way. When you slow down and make space for your emotions, you can start to process them.

Jacobs Hendel, a psychotherapist, uses a process, which involves connecting your feet to the floor, deep belly breathing, slowing down and then identifying where different emotions are felt in the body.     5     ——once anxiety goes down, you can identify the other emotions that are coming up in your body. If the same emotions keep coming up and causing you stress, learning to sit with them and work through them. Facing your emotions may help you see that they aren’t as scary as you thought.
