On the day before Christmas, everyone was in our home, talking only about my newborn sister. My family was becoming hers. Even my uncles didn’t ask me anything about the gift. She stole everything I’d ever had, my life and my presents. Thinking about this, I cried to sleep. I had a nightmare (噩梦) and woke up at the middle of the night. Shadows were all around me, and I was defenseless and so weak. I ran into my parents’ bedroom but couldn’t wake up my poor parents who were just too worn out. I was standing near their bed, trying not to cry when I saw her. She was awake and looking at me with her big eyes in her small bed.

5 . Bookstores, like wines, have different notes, different flavors, each one distinct. There are the musty, quirky ones with random piles and dusty rows, usually with both used and new books. There are the small indie stores charming and cozy. Then there’s the big-box with long, straight rows, bright and dustless, usually boasting a cafe and a kids section you can get lost in.

My adoration for bookstores is, without a doubt, partly nostalgic(怀旧的). I came of age in the late 1990s, when Amazon was mostly known as a river in South America, phones were not smart and bookstores were dotted around cities.

When my husband and I were dating, our go-to date was to get coffee and walk around bookstores together. It was the best. Wed move slowly, meandering through the religion section, the memoirs, fiction, poetry, history. I’d pick up a title I’d heard about and sit in the aisle reading a chapter. I’d find one I’d never heard of and scan the back cover. We’d sip our coffee and read each other interesting paragraphs from books we found.

I fell for bookstores and for my husband at the same time. So when stores began closing down all over America, we were both sorrowful. What were we supposed to do with a night out now?

In a recent very informal and unscientific poll (调查) of my friends, I found that many of us love and miss physical bookstores. Friends described the feeling of discovery and exploration, the calming serenity of being surrounded by words and ideas. My wise friend Greg said,“Bookstores are like the best parties; You may discover a new friend or join an unexpected conversation with a simple turn of your head.”

I dream of an America with streets full of independent bookstores whose inventories (库存清单) contradict one another. But right now I’m rooting for any brick-and-mortar (实体的) book store, really. Perhaps the greatest gift that these letters have given me is to see how much my husband's parents valued our letters to them. The letters helped her know her grandchildren and feel like part of our lives. I shall file them for my children so that they can read the events of our lives and know that they, too, were treasured.

10 . A recent study showed that Dutch teens are the happiest in the world. The study surveyed 48 countries that represented nearly 7,000 teenagers. The survey asked a range of questions about body image, life satisfaction, and school environment.

Out of the 48 countries, the U.S. was fairly low on the list for teen happiness. America has experienced an increase in depression rates. So, what exactly makes Dutch teens happier and less anxious about life?

“I think Dutch children have generally positive reactions from their families and schools,” said Dr. Simone de Roos, a researcher. “They have a supportive environment at home, with friends and also at school. Dutch parents give a lot of support and have mild control. There’s a very good climate, teachers accept the feelings of pupils, and pupils trust teachers.”

The study also shows that Dutch teens’ daily habits have a huge effect on their overall health. According to the report, Dutch teens are five times more likely to eat breakfast during the week and have kinder classmates. Dutch teens are less likely to experience bullying (欺凌) and reported fewer rates of obesity. Prof. Ruut Veenhoven, director of World Happiness Day, said that across Europe young people do not feel anxious about living up to high expectations.

“If you look across Europe, the Dutch and the Danes are the most generous and they prefer to have their children develop self-independence rather than force them to obey others,” he said. Children have more freedom to do what they want, and in doing what they want, they develop an idea of what they really like as well as social skills. A happy boy may be sometimes not a very good boy.”

Actually, there are many more benefits to a Dutch childhood: they have comparatively little homework in school and experience regular family meals. Dutch kids are also more likely to be educated than their parents, and grow up in one of the most peaceful countries in the world.
