文章大意:本文为一篇说明文。文章介绍了《牛津英语词典》将“Add Oil”及其他汉语和英语的混合体收录其中。
1 . 阅读下面短文,在空白处填入 1 个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

“Add Oil” is the literal English translation of the Chinese phrase “Jiāyóu” (Cantonese “Ga Yau”), which is used to express encouragement, excitement, or support     1     others. It's used in sporting events     2     (encourage) a friend, and in many other conversations!

“Add Oil” has now been added to the Oxford English Dictionary. The     3     (describe) of this entry in the Oxford English Dictionary is “chiefly Hong Kong English”, and notes its earliest appearance in a book     4     (publish) back in 1964.

Some people believe that the phrase     5     (invent) at the Macau Grand Prix (澳门汽车大奖赛) during the 1960s, where the crowd would shout at the pit teams (加油团队) to “Add Oil!” to the racing cars. The meaning of the Chinese characters is to add (jiā) oil (yóu), which means     6    (add) oil/fuel to an engine to fire it up.

In places such as Hong Kong, where a mixture (混合) of Chinese and English is     7     (common) used among friends, the English phrase often replaces the Chinese characters, and this is the reason     8     the phrase has been added to the dictionary.

9    latest addition to Oxford English Dictionary is by no means a stand-alone. So far, other Chinese phrases that     10     (enter) daily English include “long time no see” and “no can do”.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,介绍了“Picturesque”一词的来源、一些艺术家风景画的不同之处以及对于“如画”美的理解和态度。
2 . 阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

‘Picturesque’ is the word we reach for     1     (describe) the attraction of a charming view or natural scene. In fact, it has a rather evil past. Coming from the Italian word ‘pittoresco’, ‘picturesque’ was seized upon at the end of the 18th Century by upper class British artists who drew     2     (inspire) from the bright colored Italian landscape paintings they’d encountered, while     3     (visit) the great hubs of European culture on     4     became known as The Grand Tour.

But the ‘picturesque’ paintings that artists such as William Gilpin began to create     5     (differ) strikingly from the wide-open and liberating views you find in paintings by such masters of ‘pittoresco’ style as Claude Lorrain or Salvator Rosa.     6     winding paths and curving rivers that lead one’s eye from the shadowy foreground in a Claude painting,     7     the soul-soaring horizons in his sun-soaked distance, are suddenly shut down — the liberating journey of the eye is blocked. Some cultural critics have suggested that the     8     (advocate) of the British picturesque may have been motivated by fear of     9     (politics) revolution spreading from France to England, and so prevented its power in order to keep the ambitions of observers of their work in check. No wonder the US transcendentalist (超验主义者) Ralph Waldo Emerson, who believed in the rise of spirit, once stated     10     (firm): “Pictures must not be too picturesque”.

4 . 阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

Have you ever wondered     1     we say maidongxi (买东西) instead of mainanbei, and shangcesuo (上厕所) rather than xiacesuo? Many Chinese words have directions in them, and there is lots of history and culture     2     (hide) behind.

The origin of maidongxi     3     (date) back to the Tang Dynasty, when two markets gained     4     (popular) in capital Chang’an. One was called the East Market while the other was called the West Market. When shopping, people usually went to the East Market first,    5    then the West Market. This practice gave rise to the term of maidongxi.

Another case is yijian xiangzuo (意见相左).    6    great many Chinese are right-handed, and they may feel     7     (convenient) if they use their left hand to write or use chopsticks. Therefore, in ancient Chinese, “left” was easily linked to being different, such as yijian xiangzuo. Likewise, if people don’t accept common     8     (belief), we may say they are following pangmen zuodao.

Then came the story of shangcesuo and xiachufang. In ancient times, houses were laid out in a certain way,     9    gate would face south with a bathroom in the northeastern top and the kitchen in the southeastern bottom. In Chinese, we talk about “the north” as shang and “the south” as xia. So people would say they were going “up” to the bathroom and “down” to the kitchen. Shang and xia also reflect social status. For example, the emperor     10     (call) huangshang and dianxia usually means the prince.

The English phrase “it’s a small world” has been commonly used, and the recent coronation (加冕) of King Charles III and Queen Camilla in London on Saturday made me appreciate     1     (it) real meaning.

I was one of those who were viewing this once-in-a-life-time event on television. This meant that I literally had a front-row seat to a ceremony     2     has been virtually unchanged for centuries. The coronation of a new king is a significant moment in the life of many British people, but until the 20th century, the opportunity to see this     3     (impress) event was limited to a select group of people. All that was changed by the development in mass     4     (communicate), particularly the development of cinema and television.

In fact, the first time that    5     “ordinary” person in Britain could have seen, or heard the coronation was in 1937. In that year, film cameras     6     (allow) inside London’s Westminster Abbey     7     (record) the event for the first time.     8    , what was special about the coronation of King Charles III was that this centuries-old ceremony had a global audience.

The fact that I could sit on my sofa, many     9     (thousand) of kilometers away from those events in London on Saturday and see the coronation as it actually happened really brought this fact home to me,     10     (make) me truly appreciate that we are now really living in such a “small world”.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。研究者发现撒谎可能与无法抵抗诱惑有关,而且,当人们不为不诚实承担后果时,他们往往会撒谎更多。
10 . 阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

“The dangerous thing about lying is people don’t understand how the act changes us,” says Dan Ariely, behavioural psychologist at Duke University. Psychologists have documented children lying as early as the age of two. Lying is even considered     1     developmental milestone, like crawling and walking, with sophisticated planning and attention     2     (require). But, for most people, lying gets increasingly limited as we develop a sense of morality and the ability to self-regulate.

According to Ariely, lying takes work. In studies, he gave subjects a chance to deceive for monetary gains while examining their brains in a functional MRI machine. Some people told the truth instantly. But others opted to lie, and they showed increased activity in their frontal parietal (颅腔壁的) control network, which is involved in complex thinking. It suggested that they were deciding between truth and dishonesty, and after thinking about it,     3     (choose) the latter. For a follow-up analysis, he found that people whose neural (神经的) reward centers were     4     (active) when they won money were less likely to be among the group of liars, and the opposite was seen among those so-called habitual liars, suggesting that lying     5     have to do with the inability to resist temptation.

External conditions also matter in terms of when and how often we lie. We are more likely to lie, research shows, when we see others being dishonest. And we are less likely to lie when we think others are watching. “We     6     a society need to understand that, when we don’t punish lying, we increase the probability of     7     happening again, influencing all of us,” Ariely said.

In a 2016 study, Ariely and colleagues showed how dishonesty alters people’s brains, making it easier to tell lies in the future. When people told a lie, the scientists noticed a burst of activity in their amygdala, a crucial part of the brain that produces fear and guilt. But when scientists had their subjects     8     (play) a game in which they won money by deceiving their partner, they noticed the negative signals from the amygdala began to decrease. “Not only that,” said Ariely in an interview with National Science Channel, “     9     people tended to lie more when they faced no consequences for dishonesty. This means that if you give people multiple opportunities to lie for their own benefit, they start with little lies,     10     get bigger over time.”
