Sharifkhuja has loved Chinese movies and culture since childhood. His father is also a huge fan of China. Before his     1    (graduate) from high school, Sharifkhuja’s father thought that his son was an     2    (ambition) person and suggested that he go to China to learn Chinese in the future. Having studied Chinese for two years in Tajikistan, Sharifkhuja finally came to China     3    (pursue) his dream.

Up to now, Chinese language and calligraphy     4    (become) part of his life. In his first calligraphy class, Sharifkhuja said that writing with brushes was     5     amazing experience, which could help him feel the spirit of Chinese culture. Besides,     6     he enjoys most is traditional Chinese music. Sharifkhuja is willing to share his experience in China with     7    (he) family and friends and introduce Tajik culture to his Chinese pals.

Having stayed in China for many years, he hopes to work in the embassy (大使馆)    8     a cultural ambassador between the two countries. Meanwhile, he also plans to return home as a Chinese teacher because     9     (use) the skills he acquired in China to improve the education of his motherland is one of his dreams.

Learning languages has many advantages: feeling confident when travelling abroad, making friends     1    (international), being able to read books in the original(原版的), and a lot more, like studying and working in other     2    (country). Most people live under the stereotype(刻板印象)that they lose their learning abilities with age. However, if faced     3     a challenge when there is no other way except to learn the new foreign language, adult people can show great results. Before     4    (decide)how to learn a new language, the first thing is to decide in which situation the language is to be used.

If the target is, for example,    5    (travel)or find new business at some international events, a course focusing on speaking practices is recommended(推荐). The     6    (base)vocabulary and conversational structures(结构), studied and practised heavily during a short period of time, may lead to the needed result, which might be the ability to communicate on the streets or support     7     small business talk. Usually the two or three months of study     8    (be)enough to start communicating. However, if brought back shortly to the usual environment, the person might lose the majority of knowledge if there would not be any supporting practice afterwards. Unfortunately, without practical usage     9     further development, the language abilities may go away as easily as they came. The language cannot     10    (learn)once and forever.

Languages play a vital role in     1     (ensure) cultural diversity and promoting intercultural dialogue. They also help in attaining quality education for all, strengthening     2     (cooperate), building inclusive knowledge societies and preserving cultural heritage.

Language rights are human rights,     5     means that everyone has the right to use their language of proficiency. The theme for International Translation Day 2023 was “Translation unveils (揭示) the many faces of humanity”. As an individual, you can start learning     10     new language to celebrate this day.

Five years ago, I began an exciting journey to learn Chinese. I     1    (attract) by the beauty of the Chinese language. The characters seemed like intricate puzzles (复杂的拼图游戏). I spent countless hours studying tones, pronunciation,     2    grammar. My love for Chinese was so great that I made the life-changing     3    (decide) to enter Huanggang Normal University. However, the arrival     4    COVID-l9 shattered (摧毁) my dreams. For two years, I hoped to set foot in the land, fearing that my wish would never come to fruition.

I finally had the chance     5    (start) my long-awaited journey to China. I was so excited when I stepped onto Chinese land. Now I have been able to practice my Chinese skills daily,     6     (use) the language to experience daily life. Body language is an important part of     1     (communicate). If you wish to communicate well, then it makes sense to understand how you can use your body to say what you mean.

Different culture usually makes different body language. Chinese often greet others with a firm handshake, but Americans like a loving hug instead. Take care     5     your body language, then you may make a good impression.

Even native English speakers have trouble    1     (understand) the New Zealand accent (口音)sometimes!

English is one of the official languages of New Zealand. However, the way Kiwis (新西兰人)speak English sounds very different to the way it    2     (speak) in the USA or the UK. The New Zealand accent is     3     (particular) special. Some people mistake it for the Australian accent but it’s not quite the same.

Vowels (元音) can sound very different in New Zealand English compared    5    American English or British English. For example, the word“kit“ in New Zealand English sounds more like ”cut”.

The “r” sound is often very soft when Kiwis speak and sometimes     6    is hard to hear it at all! For example, the word “farm” sounds more like “faahm”. This can be confusing for people    7    have learned American English where the “r” sound is very clear.

Kiwis often speak with a rising tone (音调) at the end of     8     (they) sentences making it sound like they are asking a question.

If you’re talking to someone and you’ re not sure what they’ re saying, don’t be afraid to ask them    9     (repeat) themselves slowly. Remember, Kiwis are very     10     (friend) and are happy to help.

“Hello”,     1     always makes a point about the importance of how we greet (问候) others, is a very common word in our daily life. The word we choose sets the     2     (begin) for the whole communication, and in turn, shapes the future of     3     (we) relationship with others. At times we may use something like a formal “good day” in certain situations, and a more informal “hey” or “hi” in others. Knowing how     4     (say) hello in different languages is always the first step when it     5     (come) to becoming more communicative with the rest of the world. “Hello” is     6     (important) than any other word for you to remember when you’re learning a new language. Now let’s learn some different     7     (form) of “hello” in different languages around the world: in English— Hello; in Chinese— Nin ho; in French— Bonjour; in Spanish— Hola. The way of greeting someone can change depending     9     the time of the day, or your relationship with the person you’re saying hello to. Beyond the words, people also use a mixture of body language and physical (身体的) touch to greet each other, from handshakes to hugs or cheek kisses. Learning to greet someone is all about making a connection, so have     10     try and do your best.

Whenever I tell people that I teach English at the Berlin Zoo, I almost always get a questioning look. Behind it, the person is trying to figure out who exactly I teach…the animals?

Since June 2017, right before the     1     (arrive) of the two new pandas, Meng Meng and Jiao Qing, I have been helping the panda keepers at the zoo to feel more comfortable and     2     (confidence) speaking English. And who do they speak English     3    ?

Not the pandas, even though     4     language used for the medical training instructions is actually English. They talk to the flood of international tourists and to     5     (visit) Chinese zookeepers who often come to check on the pandas, which are on loan from China. They also need to be ready to give     6     (interview) in English with international journalists. This is     7     they need an English trainer.

So, what are they learning?     8     (basic), how to describe a panda’s life. It’s been an honor to watch the panda programme develop     9     to see the pandas settle into their new home. As a little girl, I     10     (wish) to be a zookeeper when I grew up. Now, I’m living out that dream indirectly by helping the panda keepers do their job in English.
