1 . Globalization (全球化) means that people, ideas, technology, money, services and many other things are moving between countries and changing the way people think and act.
Not everyone thinks the same way about globalization. Some people think it is bad,and some people think it is good. Some believe that globalization helps rich people get richer and makes poor people poorer. These people say that globalization helps big companies like Coca-Cola and McDonald’s destroy local businesses. However, the people who think globalization is a good thing argue that globalization helps poorer people to become richer. They also think that it doesn’t destroy local cultures. These people also believe globalization helps prevent wars. This is because countries with economic (经济的) connections will try hard to keep good relationships so that their economies aren’t destroyed.
Whether you think globalization is good or bad, it affects the world in two areas: jobs and cultures.
Globalization has had a very strong influence on jobs all over the world. For some workers, such as engineers, lawyers and bankers, globalization has been a good development. These workers are able to successfully compete globally and have seen an increase in their pay. But for those who work in factories or in the service industry (at hotels, shops and restaurants), it has not been good. Workers from poorer countries are trying to get these types of jobs. They will do the same job for less money. This decreases the pay for that job, so people get paid less to do it.
Cultures have also been affected by globalization. Foods such as Japanese noodles, Indian curry and French cheeses have spread around the world. We can also see an increase in the use of Chinese characters in tattoos (纹身). Some people get these tattoos but they don’t really know what the characters mean. Globalization also affects the film industry. Most people have seen American movies. But because of globalization, Korean, Indian and Japanese movies have become more worldwide.
No one knows the future of globalization. Most experts agree that it will continue to grow and have an increasingly greater influence on people’s life in the future.

5 . If you have a chance to talk with a historical figure, who would you like it to be? What would you like to know about the past or share from today? China in the Classics, a new TV show based on Chinese classics started by China Central Television (CCTV) in February, is exploring such possibilities.
In the first episode, the host of the show, Sa Beining, meets ancient Confucian scholar Fu Sheng, who interpreted Shangshu — The Book of Documents. Regarded as one of the five classics of ancient Chinese Confucianism masterpieces, the book records many firsts in the country. Even the expression zhongguo (China) is used there first.
The episode ends with the host bringing Fu to today’s modern society, where the scholar is happy to find children learning the same things he had learned in his childhood. It increased the rating of the series with viewers giving it 9 out of 10 on Douban, a film and TV show reviewing website popular among young people.
The success of China in the Classics doesn’t surprise Shen Haixiong, head of the China Media Group. Shen said in an article in the journal Qiushi, “We are happy to see the program is popular among the public, but we are prouder to find that innovative interpretation of Chinese classics is arousing young people’s interest in Chinese culture.”
Therefore, TV channels have been making bold attempts in recent years to attract today’s younger generations. The Nation’s Greatest Treasures, CCTV’s cultural show in 2017, showcased China’s history and culture through antiques in the top-class museums, and fired up the audience. The treasures include the 3,300-year-old Yinxu Ruins in Henan Province and the 1,300-year-old Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet Autonomous Region.
CCTV should make a variety of programs showcasing classics and cultural traditions to appeal to the young generation’s aesthetics, said Zhou, a professor at the School of Arts and Communication, Beijing Normal University.

6 . There is a famous story about how Walt Disney was inspired to build Disneyland. The story goes that during an afternoon visit to Griffith Park located near the Burbank Studios, Walt took a seat while his two young daughters rode the merry-go-round. Walt thought there should be a place where both children and their parents could enjoy spending some time together in an environment that would be both entertaining and pleasing to the eye, so with this thought came the idea for Disneyland.
Walt's original plan was to build an eight-acre park located near the Burbank Studios that would be a place for his employees and their families. Those plans were put on hold because of the start of World War II. By 1952, Walt had created a special department that was devoted to planning his dream.
Finally in 1953, the first steps in building the park happened when Walt employed the Stanford Research Institute to make a survey to determine the best possible location for the future park. Considering population growth and the future freeway construction(建设),they finally found a location in Anaheim and 160 acres of land were bought for the site of the new park.
The building of the park was very expensive and to collect money for the project, Walt developed the idea of the ''Walt Disney's Disneyland'' television show. It turned out to be a marvelous idea—not only gaining the money to build the park but also presenting the park to the American public.
Construction officially began on July 21,1954, and it was an ambitious(野心勃勃的)building schedule of less than one year to complete the new park for the projected opening day. Walt watched over the park's construction and progress continued with just a few minor hold-ups. Finally, the park was ready for the Opening Day on July17,1955.

When the summer heat hits countries like China and Japan, woman often carry umbrellas to protect themselves of the strong sunlight. However, a few men are seen doing such in these countries. At most, they might wear a hat-carry an umbrella would be considered silly and even inappropriate for a man.
However, this belief had been changing in recent years. In several parts of Japan, including Tokyo, men are being encouraged use umbrellas to protect them. People are starting to believe that Japanese men do and still be manly.
8 . Next time you’re in a public place, take a look around you, and count how many people are using their phones. I can tell you now that it is probably more than half, whether you’re on public transport, in a cafe or simply walking down the street.
I’m not saying that I am not an example of this, but it always amazes me how people can spend so much time on their phones without actually talking to anyone in particular.
For example, I recently visited London and travelled on the tube while I was there. Apart from the people asleep, almost everybody else was on their phones, and because of the nature of the tube, it is difficult not to see exactly what they are all doing. Of course, being underground it is difficult for you to get any signal, which rules out texting or using the Internet, but there is still plenty you can use your phones for. People were playing games, reading articles and listening to music, and I am sure that as soon as they emerged from the train station they would start texting or calling or checking their emails.
Recently, my smartphone broke and had to be sent off to the warehouse for repair for a week or so. In the meantime I had to use a really old, basic phone just to keep me in touch with my family and friends. All I could do on this phone was send text messages, make calls and play one game. And I loved it. I loved being free from the Internet, and I really didn’t mind not having constant updates about what my friends were doing or what the latest celebrity story was. It allowed me to spend more lime taking in my surroundings.
However, I knew that as soon as I got my smartphone hack I would be one of those people once again. Perhaps I should just go back to using the basic phone and forget my smartphone.

9 . Dear Sir,
I’m writing to request a valuable chance to be one of the host family for the British students. Locating in a beautiful and quite neighborhood, our large and fully-equipped apartment meets all their needs. Apart from the convenient public transportation, our own car can also take him to some nearby places of interest. With fluently English and an outgoing personality, I’m sure I will have no difficulty communicate with them. Above all, we were hosted two British students last year, through that we’ve gained lots of experience. In addition, my mother’s expert cooking can guarantee them the wonderful chance of tasting delicious Chinese food.
I would greatly appreciate if I could have the chance to host them and make friends with them. Looking forward of your reply.
