2 . You probably know who Marie Curie was, but you may not have heard of Rachel Carson. Of the outstanding ladies listed below, who do you think was the most important woman of the past 100 years?
Jane Addams (1860-1935)Anyone who has ever been helped by a social worker has Jane Addams to thank. Addams helped the poor and worked for peace. She encouraged a sense of community (社区) by creating shelters and promoting education and services for people in need. In 1931, Addams became the first American woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize.
Rachel Carson (1907-1964)If it weren’t for Rachel Carson, the environmental movement might not exist today. Her popular 1962 book Silent Spring raised awareness(意识) of the dangers of pollution and the harmful effects of chemicals on humans and on the world’s lakes and oceans.
Sandra Day O’Connor (1930-present)When Sandra Day O’Connor finished third in her class at Stanford Law School, in 1952, she could not find work at a law firm because she was a woman. She became an Arizona state senator (参议员) and in 1981, the first woman to join the U. S. Supreme Court (最高法院). O’Connor gave the deciding vote in many important cases during her 24 years on the top court.
Rosa Parks(1913-2005)On December 1,1955, in Montgomery, Alabama, Rasa Parks would not give up her seat on a bus to a white passenger. Her simple act landed Parks in prison. But it also set off the Montgomery bus boycott (抵制). It lasted for more than a year, and kicked off the civil-rights movement. “The only tired I was, was tired of giving in,” said Parks.

3 . In the African country of Malawi, fishing is a way of life for people who live near lakes. Fishing employs over 50,000 people there. Traditionally, the fishers have several methods to dry the fish for the market. They include frying, smoking, or placing them on wire racks. But since the fishers dry their catch in the open air, about half of it slowly breaks down and goes bad. And some animals even try to eat the catch.
Now, solar tents are being used to help dry fish on Lake Chilwa, Malawi’s second-largest lake. The solar tent is made from clear plastic. The plastic is stretched over a large wooden structure. The tent looks like a greenhouse, a glass building where plants can grow in the cold weather.
Jennifer Mussa is a local fish trader. “When we collect fish from the lake, we dry them inside this solar fish dryer,” she said. In the past, it would take one-and-a-half to two days to dry. Now the fishers will put it in the morning; by the evening, they can take the fish out. The solar tents have also helped fish traders get higher prices at the market for cleaner, better-quality fish.
Money for the tents came from Cultivate Africa’s Future. The organization works to improve fishing and farming methods with simple inventions. The goal is to increase access to food, resources, and markets for the communities. The organization also encourages people to use energy-saving kiln ovens to smoke fish, not open fires. Then people can cut down fewer trees for firewood.

5 . Wealthy countries are exporting millions of tons of plastic waste to Southeast Asia, where local recycling systems cannot process all of it. Greenpeace and the Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives, or GAIA, studied the issue. Their findings showed that the export of plastic waste is causing widespread pollution problems.
In early 2018, China banned the import of plastic waste for recycling, which threw the international trade in recycled materials into disorder. Greenpeace and GAIA workers gathered information from the top 21 importers and exporters of plastic waste. They looked at the recycling trade before and after the Chinese ban. Over half of the plastics — more than 3 million tons a year — used to go to China. It is now being sent to Southeast Asia. Huge mountains of plastics are growing in Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam, among other countries.
The Malaysian village of Jenjarom is about 50 kilometers away from Kuala Lumpur. Greenpeace workers found huge piles of plastic waste on the ground in the middle of a palm oil farm. Nobody was working to reduce the size of the piles. The writing on the bottles, boxes and plastic bags showed where they came from. Much of the waste traveled thousands of kilometers from Europe and North America.
People are suffering from the waste, said local environmentalist Pua Lay Peng. “They just throw the non-recyclable plastics or the rejected products, and then they burn them in the backyard of these factories. The poisonous smoke has already caused a lot of health problems for our residents.”
Kate Lin, a project leader at Greenpeace, said wealthy countries are simply exporting their waste. They do not follow up what happens after it crosses the border. Many Southeast Asian countries are beginning to restrict the import of plastic waste, which forces the rubbish to go to markets with less control, such as Indonesia and India.
Greenpeace said improving recycling is not the final solution. Instead, the world must severely reduce plastic production and consumption.

6 . With oil prices rising sharply this year, it seems remarkable to argue that water might one day be more expensive than oil. Jean-Louis Chaussade, the chief executive of the French utility company Suez, argues that water scarcity(不足)is now one of the most pressing challenges facing many industries. He told the Financial Times last year that he foresaw one day water would be more precious than oil.
It isn't only a growing world population that places demands on water - industries such as energy and agriculture are also consuming more and more. The 2030 Water Resources Group, believes that by 2030 global demand will be 40 percent higher than it is today.
The threat is now so acute that the Office of the Director of National Intelligence in the US warned that disputes over water may lead to armed conflicts, particularly in areas such as Africa and the Middle Fast. A three-year drought in South Africa caused a water crisis earlier this year, with officials warning they may have to shut off most of Cape Town's taps.
The most valuable water in the world is what we actually consume. With petrol at roughly £1.29 a liter in the UK today, a bottle of water from some of big-name branded companies can already be about three times more. And it is not going to get any cheaper. The days of relying on water flowing through our taps are coming to an end. Around the world. 2.1 billion people do not have immediate access to clean drinking water. And this isn't only a developing-world problem. In almost every country people have water stress.
Over the next ten years, if we do not come together to find answers to our water shortage. we will face major supply-related issues around the globe, not just with drinking water - our industries will be affected as well.

An old saying goes that a near neighbor is better than a distant cousin. This saying has fully proved that neighbors are so significant in our life.
In the past, neighbors helped one another build houses and clear fields. They could offer timely help when someone was in trouble. Families depended on one another for friendship and entertainment. They shared happiness and sorrow from time to time, which brought a harmonious atmosphere.
However, nowadays, lack of communication and interaction between neighbors is the norm(常态). The close relationship between neighbors is not common in our cities. A family may not even know the other families that live next door to them. We live in an age of machines and the Internet, and each family has its own car, TV set, and washing machine. People no longer depend on neighbors as much as they once did. Machines and the Internet keep people apart. In our grandparents’ times, women met while they hung the washing out, and men stopped and talked while they mowed (割草)their lawns. Today, they can’t hear anything above the noise of their power lawn mowers. And women stay inside with their electrical dryers. Children are inside watching their favorite TV shows or playing computer games.
Is the idea of being a good neighbor old-fashioned? In 1965, a power cut hit New York City, and many thousands of people were left helpless. Suddenly everyone shared the same problem, and the largest city became a group of eight million neighbors. People with cars offered rides to those walking. Other people helped direct traffic. Trapped in elevators, people played word games and helped keep each other in good spirits. In times of trouble, people still depend on one another. As time goes on, people may once again feel that being a good neighbor is important.
