1 . Every week in China, millions of people will sit in front of their TVs watching teenagers compete for the title Character Hero, which is a Chinese-style spelling bee. In this challenge, young competitors must write Chinese characters by hand. To prepare for the competition, the competitors usually spend months studying dictionaries.

Perhaps the show’s popularity should not be a surprise. Along with gunpowder and paper, many Chinese people consider the creation of Chinese calligraphy(书法) to be one of their primary contributions to civilization. Unfortunately, all over the country, Chinese people are forgetting how to write their own language without computerized help. Software on smart phones and computers allows users to type in the basic sound of the word using the Latin alphabet. The correct character is chosen from a list. The result? It’s possible to recognize characters without remembering how to write them.

But there’s still hope for the paint brush. China’s Education Ministry wants children to spend more time learning how to write.

In one Beijing primary school we visited, students practice calligraphy every day inside a specially decorated classroom with traditional Chinese paintings hanging on the walls. Soft music plays as a group of six-year-olds dip brush pens into black ink. They look up at the blackboard often to study their teacher’s examples before carefully attempting to reproduce those characters on thin rice paper. “If adults can survive without using handwriting, why bother to teach it now?” we ask the calligraphy teacher, Shen Bin. “The ability to write characters is part of Chinese tradition and culture,” she reasons. “Students must learn now so they don’t forget when they grow up.” says the teacher.

2. Why are Chinese people forgetting how to write the characters?
A.Chinese people don’t refer to dictionaries very often.
B.Chinese people no longer use brush pens or practice calligraphy.
C.Chinese people are using the Latin alphabet instead of the characters.
D.Chinese people needn’t write by hand as often with the help of technology.
3. .According to Shen Bin, being able to write characters by hand is_________.
A.necessary for adults to survive in China
B.a requirement made by the Education Ministry
C.helpful to keep Chinese tradition and culture alive
D.an ability to be developed only when you are students
4. Where does this text probably come from?
A.A news report.B.A science report.

It is known that some students cheat in exams. There are three reason for it. First of all, there are so many exams. Beside, the exams given are difficulty in some way. Secondly, some students have to cheat in exams because of they are too lazy. The last reason is to please our parents and teachers. For some students, low marks brought them great pressure and make them depressing.

In my opinion, cheating in exams are wrong. We should take positive attitude to our studies, and try to get a mark what is true as well as good.

4 . You and your friends are settling into your seats. The new movie is about to start and you've got the snacks: soda and popcorn. Food is part of what makes the movies fun.

Just as the lights go out, you catch a slight smell of...tuna fish! You turn your head, searching for the source. Then you spot him: A guy is enjoying a tuna fish sandwich. How'd he get that here? You wonder. Then you remember how much you paid for your snacks.

What invites the unwelcome outside food is probably the price. Why pay $5 for a bag of M&MS when you can get them for a dollar at the corner store?

Earlier this year, a Michigan man decided to fight for his right to snack. Joshua Thompson is suing his local theater after it banned outside food. He argues the ban breaks a Michigan law that prevents businesses from charging extremely high prices. However, most legal experts believe Thompson has little chance of winning his case, though he does have a point: 85 cents out of every dollar of treats a movie theater sells is pure profit.

The truth is that movie theaters are more in the snack business than the movie business. A huge part of the ticket income goes to the Hollywood studio. This makes sense, since the studios have to pay the costs of movie production and advertising. But that often doesn't leave much cash for the theater, which also has its own running costs. If customers stopped buying food, owners would have to raise ticket prices even higher.

Of course, there's another reason to think twice before bringing food into the movies: It's against the rules. Breaking those rules can have unpleasant consequences too. Some theaters will kick you out if they catch you. Even without the threat of punishment, we should follow rules all the time—out of respect.

Here's a good idea: Eat before the movie.

1. What can we infer about the guy mentioned in Paragraph 2?
A.He prefers eating things in the dark.B.He brought the sandwich from outside.
C.He showed little interest in the new movie.D.He dislikes the food provided by the cinema.
2. What do we know about Joshua Thompson?
A.He broke a Michigan law.B.He is likely to lose the case.
C.He thinks cinema tickets are too expensive.D.He was forbidden to have snacks at the theater.
3. In Paragraph 5 the author mainly explains________.
A.how movie studios work with movie theatersB.how movie theaters reduce their operating costs
C.why Hollywood studios must pay high costsD.why snack sales are important to movie theaters
4. How does the author feel about bringing outside food into the cinema?
A.It is unacceptable.B.It is convenient.
C.It is great fun.D.It is lawful.

5 . The way that others judge you is similar to placing marbles (玻璃弹珠) on a scale (天平盘) as soon as they get any information. We form impressions of people the same way we form an impression of anything: As soon as our scale of marbles starts tipping one way, we start collecting evidence to back that up by picking up the marble that’s easiest to pick up.

Why? Our brains are lazy and our time is limited. As we get more choices, we become more careless about everything. “Basically, we get around choice overload by ignoring most of the choices we have,” says the decision-making researcher Peter Todd.

Think about an employment manager working through a stack of résumés (一摞简历), one of which advertises an applicant’s (申请人的) fluency in French. Does it matter, even if the position is for a web designer? It just might.

“Suppose the manager has a great interest in learning French to talk to her elderly aunt in Montreal. No doubt the applicant would feel excited about being offered the job,” writes Warren Thorngate in Judging Merit. “But how would you feel about such a one-step judgment, especially if you’d spent three days preparing your résumé for the job opening but did not trouble to note in your résumé that you, too, spoke French?”

I called Thorngate to ask how such things manage to continue. “Some very good applicants may be missed, but they don’t care,” the judgment and decision-making researcher replied.

“It’s one of those problems where everybody thinks that they’re a good judge of character,” says the researcher Kristine Kuhn. “But obviously people just are not nearly as good as they think they are. Even if they met someone and judged them as great employees and employed them, and then they turned out to be bad, that doesn’t shake people’s confidence. They can always explain away that it really didn’t have anything to do with them not being a good judge of character.”

1. What does the author say about first impressions in Paragraph 1?
A.They’re lasting.
B.They’re important.
C.They’re hard to make.
D.They’re often unreliable.
2. Why does the author give the example of an employment manager’s judgment?
A.To prove it is not easy to prepare a résumé.
B.To suggest the employment manager is irresponsible.
C.To explain how your résumé makes a first impression.
D.To show first impressions are formed quickly and easily.
3. What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 5 refer to?
A.Employment managers.
B.Decision-makers.
C.Researchers.
D.Applicants.
4. What would happen if people made a wrong judgment according to Kristine Kuhn?
A.They would hide it.
B.They would be punished.
C.They would excuse themselves.
D.They would lose their confidence.

Some ladies still feel they have no choice but     4     (blame) the rude man. But time is changing. You can’t entirely blame men for this change in manners. 7 . New research says 35 percent of the deaths of children worldwide are caused by hunger. The research is from poor to middle-income countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Robert Black from the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University in Maryland was the leading writer of the research. He says more than 3.5 million mothers and children under five die in poor countries each year because of hunger.

He says more than two million children die from underdevelopment, either before or after birth. Millions of others who survive face a lifetime of disabilities or early death. And the effects are not just physical. Poor brain development can limit economic success as children become adults. Then the cycle of poverty and hunger often repeats for their children.

Doctor Black says hungry children are also more likely to have conditions like high blood pressure and heart disease as adults. He says the studies show that food programs need to place the greatest importance on the first two years of life. Hungry children can suffer the whole life damage from age two.

So it is high time to improve their diets. Diets should include foods rich in vitamin A and other useful things. The researchers say early help like these could reduce child deaths by 25%.

The research has faced some criticism(批评). A medical aid group says the researchers underestimate(低估)the number of child deaths from hunger. The researchers say there are findings that support this treatment but more studies are needed to compare it to hospital care.
