1 . You can't buy your 10-year-old daughter a smart phone because you are scared of her becoming a social outcast. Sometimes as the parent, you have to make the hard decisions and be the backbone. But you need to be confident in your decision, and to do that you have to think it through and discuss it.

It's possible for children to have smart phones and not become addicted, which means they can use theirs smartphones reasonably. They can have one and also read a lot and even play outside. It's not black or white. You may ask me what I would do as a parent. I have never been addicted to technology, but I don't refuse it. I haven't and wouldn't buy my daughter a smartphone, but I have given her my old ones with rules attached. And it's important for parent to understand their children's phones and how they work. But parental decisions made with no discussion don't harvest respect and understanding, only hostility. And there will be the seeds of anger later .

It's interesting that you see the smartphone as more of an issue than social media. I am the opposite. A smartphone can be an amazing tool to help your children communicate with others and discover new things , but it can also become a tool that brings school life and its problems home. That's what I would oppose most because we all need switch-off time. Think of some rules for using smartphones, but they need to be discussed and work for you. For example, no phones upstairs, minimal use at home,no social media sites, or only certain, no independent app-buying,etc. A smartphone shouldn't be a byword for"do what you want".

This will be the first of many things your daughter feels passionate(热情的) about and you may not agree with. She needs to listen to you and you also need to listen to her. As an adult, you are in charge and are supposed to build a good relationship with her. And it's your job to take the long view at times when her vision can see only what's right in front of her.

2 . The prestigious (久负盛名) Peking University and Tsinghua University held graduation ceremonies on the same day this year. The presidents of the two universities delivered excellent speeches at the ceremonies as they used words, phrases or ways of expression that are very popular on the Internet currently. At the same time, graduation speeches by other university presidents were also under the spotlight for the same reason. Their speeches were warmly welcomed by students as they contained many fashionable words today, such as "floating clouds" ( meaning "too small and of little importance to mention") and "gelivable" (meaning " very helpful") . In the speeches , these university presidents recalled campus life together with students and finally moved all the audiences. They were very different from the usual run of lectures.

Many university presidents have changed their regular manner of addressing graduation ceremonies from an advising and preaching (说教) mode to a more fashionable and funny approach. They try to use those words popular among young people in their speeches.

In the past, university presidents' speeches were criticized for being too standard and lacking sentiment. Now , they quote fashionable words in their addresses, reflecting they are starting to adopt more everyday attitudes to students. The use of these new expressions has triggered a heated discussion. It focuses on the question of whether university presidents should speak in an informal way at graduation ceremonies.

Supporters agree with the new approach. They consider it good to build close ties with students by using the youth's own words. Opponents argue the new ways have no practical value or significance for education but are merely to please those leaving university.

4 . Every week in China, millions of people will sit in front of their TVs watching teenagers compete for the title Character Hero, which is a Chinese-style spelling bee. In this challenge, young competitors must write Chinese characters by hand. To prepare for the competition, the competitors usually spend months studying dictionaries.

Perhaps the show’s popularity should not be a surprise. Along with gunpowder and paper, many Chinese people consider the creation of Chinese calligraphy(书法) to be one of their primary contributions to civilization. Unfortunately, all over the country, Chinese people are forgetting how to write their own language without computerized help. Software on smart phones and computers allows users to type in the basic sound of the word using the Latin alphabet. The correct character is chosen from a list. The result? It’s possible to recognize characters without remembering how to write them.

But there’s still hope for the paint brush. China’s Education Ministry wants children to spend more time learning how to write.

In one Beijing primary school we visited, students practice calligraphy every day inside a specially decorated classroom with traditional Chinese paintings hanging on the walls. Soft music plays as a group of six-year-olds dip brush pens into black ink. They look up at the blackboard often to study their teacher’s examples before carefully attempting to reproduce those characters on thin rice paper. “If adults can survive without using handwriting, why bother to teach it now?” we ask the calligraphy teacher, Shen Bin. “The ability to write characters is part of Chinese tradition and culture,” she reasons. “Students must learn now so they don’t forget when they grow up.” says the teacher.

1. What can we learn about the Character Hero?
A.It’s open to people of all ages and all walks.
B.It’s the most-viewed TV programs in China.
C.It aims to spread Chinese culture to the world.
D.It draws great public attention across the country.
2. Why are Chinese people forgetting how to write the characters?
A.Chinese people don’t refer to dictionaries very often.
B.Chinese people no longer use brush pens or practice calligraphy.
C.Chinese people are using the Latin alphabet instead of the characters.
D.Chinese people needn’t write by hand as often with the help of technology.
3. .According to Shen Bin, being able to write characters by hand is_________.
A.necessary for adults to survive in China
B.a requirement made by the Education Ministry
C.helpful to keep Chinese tradition and culture alive
D.an ability to be developed only when you are students
4. Where does this text probably come from?
A.A news report.B.A science report.
C.An advertisement.D.Children’s literature.

5 . Earlier last month, when a young woman and a male friend were meeting up at a coffee shop in Tianjin, another man tried to chat her up and asked her for her WeChat ID.

The woman politely turned down the man’s request but a few days later she got to know that a video of her at the coffee shop had been posted on a short video-sharing platform. The woman was furious as the man who had tried to chat her up had not told her he was making a video nor taken her permission before uploading the video. She left a comment under the video, asking for its removal, and even reported the matter to the platform’s handlers. The account that posted the video was soon disabled.

However, this case is far from alone. Websites dealing in short-videos are filled with accounts that post such videos showing “how to chat up women”. Their purpose is to post such videos for money.

Taking a video of someone without their permission and uploading it violates(侵害) someone’s right to privacy, but such videos are being made and uploaded online with increasing frequency. It was only because the woman in this instance complained that the video of her was removed. What if her attention had not been drawn to the video? One just has to browse these sites to find many such videos.

Obviously, there are loopholes in the supervision(监管漏洞)of some short-video platforms, as they are uploading contents that violate other people’s right to privacy.

Women need to watch out if a stranger tries to chat them up. If they suspect the person interacting with them might have a hidden camera somewhere, they should consider calling the police to better protect their right to privacy.

1. What is the writer’s intention for writing the first two paragraphs?
A.Warning women of the possible harm.
B.Introducing the topic of violating privacy.
C.Stressing the seriousness of the phenomenon.
D.Commenting on the man’s unacceptable behavior.
2. What is the man’s most probable reason to upload the video?
A.To impress viewers.B.To earn money.
C.To contact the woman.D.To share the platform.
3. What is the main idea of the paragraph 4?
A.There are more and more privacy-violating videos on line.
B.It is wrong to take videos of people without their knowing.
C.It is of importance that we protect our right by complaining.
D.A number of people go to websites with improper materials.
4. What is the author’s attitude to the management of some short-video platforms?
A.Positive.B.Satisfied.C.Negative.D.Doubtful.

6 . A simple piece of clotheslines hangs between some environmentally friendly Americans and their neighbors. On one side stand those who see clothes dryers as a waste of energy and a major polluter of the environment. As a result, they are turning to clotheslines as part of the "what-I-can- do environmentalism”

But on the other side are people who are against drying clothes outside, arguing that clotheslines are unpleasant to look at. They have persuaded Homeowners Associations(HOAs) across the US to stop outdoor clotheslines, because clothesline drying also tends to lower home value in the neighborhood. This has led to a Right-to-Dry Movement that is calling for laws be passed to protect the choice to use clotheslines. So far, only three states have laws to protect clotheslines.

Matt Reck, 37, is the kind of eco-friendly person who feeds his trees with bathwater and reuses water drops from his air conditioners to water plants. His family also uses a clothesline. But several days ago, the HOA in North Carolina told him that a dissatisfied neighbor had telephoned them about his clothesline. The Recks paid no attention to the warning and still dried their clothes on a line in the yard "Many people say they are environmentally friendly but they don't take matters in their own hands," says Reck. The local HOA has decided not to take any action, unless more neighbors complain.

North Carolina lawmakers say that stopping clotheslines is not the right thing to do. But HOAs and housing businesses believe that clothesline drying reminds people of poor neighborhoods. They worry that if buyers think their future neighbors can" even afford dryers, housing prices will fall.

Environmentalists say such worries are not necessary, and in view of global warming, that idea needs to change. As they say, "The clothesline is beautiful Hanging clothes outside should be encouraged. We all have to do at least something to slow down the process of global warming.

A.Housing businesses.B.Environmentalists.
C.Homeowners Associations.D.Reck's dissatisfied neighbors.

7 . Foxes have become a part of life in Britain's urban areas. They are striking creatures but they are also dangerous.Three years ago, twin baby girls Isabella and Lola Koupparis were left with arm and face injuries after they were attacked by a fox while they were sleeping at their home.Last week,four-week-old baby boy Denny Dolan was bitten by a fox which entered his home. After gaining access to the home through the front door, the fox pulled the baby down from the sofa and tried to drag him outside, biting him and almost severing(割断) his finger.

Although fox attacks on humans are still very rare, they will become more common if we don't change our behavior towards these increasingly fearless animals. It is humans rather than foxes that are responsible for rising fox attacks on humans.

On the one hand, people who love foxes treat these wild animals like pets, leaving food out for foxes, feeding them from their hands, and even inviting foxes into their home. The result is that the fox is more brazen(厚颜无耻的)and less inclined to avoid us.It is those people who feed foxes that cause foxes to lose their fear of humans. However,as long as they have a healthy fear of humans, they won't bother humans.

On the other hand, foxes have moved into cities for lack of resources in rural areas. We take away their natural habitat to build more houses and factories.Foxes have no choice but to live and search for food in the city.If they live in the forest,no fox attack will happen.

We have to learn to share the earth with animals and let foxes return to their natural habitat. We also have to learn to look upon foxes as wild animals. We have to remember that they are instinctive killers, efficient and silent with only one purpose, kill to eat.We must certainly not intervene them, even when they look starved. They are hungry for a reason. The hunger will force them to hunt for rabbits and other animals instead of waiting for food at your door.

1. We can learn from the passage that
A.it is common for people to spot foxes in British cities
B.it is very difficult for people to raise foxes as pets
C.it is common for foxes to attack a child in Britain's urban areas
D.it is very dangerous for foxes to live in Britain's urban areas
2. Why do more and more foxes flood into cities?
A.Because urban people love the cute animal.
B.Because foxes lack natural resources in the forest.
C.Because no houses are built for them in the forest.
D.Because their habitats are occupied by other animals.
3. We can learn from the passage that the author                     .
A.is very cruel to foxes
B.is a wild animal lover
C.is concerned about foxes
D.is against feeding foxes
4. What is the main idea of the passage?
A.It is humans rather than foxes that are to blame for the rising fox attacks on humans.
B.People in cities must certainly not feed foxes, even when they look starved.
C.Human beings have to learn to live in harmony with wild animals in cities.
D.Foxes in British cities are striking creatures but they are also dangerous animals.

8 . Tourism can be both good and bad. Yes, it brings in money for the local economy and creates lots of jobs for locals, but it may also bring some problems.

One growing problem is tourists who want to prove that they have visited someplace. Tourists have used paint, rocks, or even keys to write on the Luxor Temple in Egypt, the Colosseum in Rome, Stonehenge in the UK, memorial stones at the bottom of Qomolangma, and many, many other places. Thousands of tourists sites are being destroyed by tourists who “love them to death”. I have three words for people like this: please stop it. If you want to leave a mark on the world, do it by changing someone’s life with kindness and love. Pass kindness along to future generations, not destruction.

Another big problem in some places has been tourists disturbing the local people and life. Some tourists wander around and take pictures of local people without asking for their permission. For example, Chiang Mai University in Thailand and Yonsei University in South Korea have great numbers of tourists visiting their campuses and walking through their libraries and other public areas, taking pictures of students and disturbing their studies. I have three words for tourists like this: please be considerate. I have three words for people like this: please stop it.

The number of problems from tourists is endless: walking in large groups without considering others who need to walk by, crossing roads without observing local traffic laws, and many more. The only way to solve the issue of the terrible tourist is to make sure that you are not one! Be the best, kindest, most polite tourist possible. Remember, whenever you step outside your country’s borders, you are representing your country to the rest of the world.

1. What does the writer say is the only way to solve the problem of the terrible tourist?
A.Make sure that you are not one of those terrible touristB.Be the best and kindest tourist possible
C.Be the most polite tourist possibleD.All of the above
2. What does the author mean by the underlined word “destruction” in Paragraph 2?
A.Impressing somebody.B.Destroying something.
C.Annoying somebody.D.Reviving someplace
3. Which of the following is true?
A.As tourists, we   can do what we like to do.
B.It is easy to solve the problems tourism brings.
C.Being taken photos makes local people happy.
D.Tourists have used paint, rocks or even keys to write on some attractions.
4. What’s the best title of the passage?
A.The number of problems from tourists is endlessB.Tourism brings some problems
C.Be a good touristD.Stop destroying

9 . Scientists have made great discoveries. But how have they influenced our personal lives? Do kids in your classroom even know when Einstein lived? You may be wondering: but why is it important to teach kids about modern-day scientists?

First, stories of scientists can encourage kids. Chris Hadfield is a Canadian who went to space, and he’s a real, guitar-playing person. He makes singing videos on YouTube! His story can make kids think scientists are also common people. Hearing scientists’ stories makes kids think “I can do that too!”

But not only that, the stories of famous scientists can encourage kids to never give up. Bill Nye was always refused when trying to be an astronaut. But today, he’s made a lot of successes in his role as a popular science educator and engineer. Besides, it’s no secret that scientific discoveries require trying, and trying again.

Another way some scientists can encourage kids is through their diversity. Neil deGrasse Tyson, for example, is an African-American, which is not common in his field. Such stories can make kids think anyone can be a scientist.

It’s important to know that scientists don’t need to be “gifted” or “good” at school. Often we consider a scientist as being an extremely smart kid at school. That doesn’t have to be true. They just need to have a great interest in science. Telling students stories of scientists can encourage them to show interest in science. As long as they’re interested, they are likely to become a scientist in the future.

Modern scientists teach kids that knowledge builds upon the foundation others have laid. This is important — no one can do it alone. Scientists’ stories can encourage today’s young scientists to keep trying. They’ll be encouraged not to give up on the dream of making discoveries. Even if they haven’t made important discoveries, their research may help the following scientists.

1. What can Chris Hadfield’s story tell students?
A.Scientists are interested in different things.
B.Students should have a hobby of their own.
C.Scientists can be ordinary like people around us.
D.Students should consider scientists as their models.
2. Which of the following would the author agree with?
A.African-Americans are more likely to become scientists.
B.Scientists are not necessarily very smart at school.
C.Not all scientists really show interest in science.
D.Scientists are usually good at their schooling.
3. The last paragraph shows us that ________.
A.scientists should help each other
B.a scientist should never give up trying
C.making discoveries is necessary for scientists
D.new scientific discoveries may be based on others’ findings
4. What is the text mainly about?
A.Why scientists are important to us.B.Why students should be taught about scientists.
C.Why students love stories of scientists.D.Why scientists can encourage students.
