2 . More than half of Beijing’s adult single children don’t want to have two kids, even though the national policy allows them to do so.

The country’s family planning policy of the late 1970s restricted (限制) urban families from having more than one child to control population growth. However, a new survey shows 52 percent of those now-grown-up single children, who are allowed to have two children, do not want a second child.

Beijing has about 2 million only-child adults. Only 24 percent of them said they would like to have two children. More than a quarter of them would choose a “DINK” (double income, no kids lifestyle). Survey figures showed that respondents with a basic education wanted 1.1 children on average, those with a bachelor degree wanted 1.3, and those with masters or higher degrees wanted 1.5 children.

“Beijing has had a super low birth rate — less than 1.3 children in a family on average for nearly 20 years, causing increasing pressure on the country’s aging population,” Hou Yafei, a professor with the institute, said. Hou said that the top four factors that determined people’s desires to have children were “income, child care, housing and policy conditions” “The government should encourage couples from one-child families to have a second child and should provide better welfare services,” Hou said.

The survey also found that people with higher education backgrounds want to have more children because they are more confident about their future.

To promote a higher population growth rate, some provincial governments have relaxed rules and allowed more people to have more than one child. In Shanghai, the death rate has exceeded the birth rate for more than 10 years, and less than 30 percent of only-child couples have had a second child.

1. How many only-child adults in Beijing want to have a “DINK” lifestyle?
A.About 280,000.B.About 480,000.
C.About 500,000.D.About 360,000.
2. Which is a key factor affecting people’s willingness to have children?
A.Earnings.B.Ages
C.Parents care.D.Schooling policy.
3. What might the author agree with?
A.The birth rate in Shanghai will increase soon.
B.The government has taken steps to change the situation.
C.The country’s family planning policy aims to help live longer.
D.People with lower education backgrounds want to have more kids.
4. What is this passage mainly about?
A.Beijing has kept a super low birth rate for 20 years.
B.The country’s family planning policy should be stopped.
C.The government allows people to have more than one child.
D.Most Beijing only-child couples don’t want to have two children.

3 . Little boys don’t like reading any more and even little girls don’t enjoy it as much as they once did. This is the accepted wisdom inside the book industry —and in many British families, too. Parents and booksellers tend to blame the growing appeal of online entertainment and handheld games, but research from the US is challenging these assumptions.

Michael Norris, an American publishing expert, will release findings in the monthly Book Publishing Report which show that, despite the best intentions, it is well-meaning mothers and fathers who often stop their sons and daughters from picking up the reading habit.

“Parents have too much of a role in deciding which books their children are going to read,” said Norris. “It is turning children off.”

The results of a number of surveys Norris has carried out with hundreds of American book-sellers over the past year have provided the basis for a series of tips for parents designed to help children find enjoyment in books.

One of his tips is to make sure children talk directly to a librarian or a bookseller, while parents stand well back. Parents should allow children to choose their own reading material. “Even if a mother or father is just standing with the child when the bookseller asks them what they like to read, we have found that the child will give an answer they think their parent wants to hear. It will not be the same answer they would give alone,” said Norris.

Norris’s another tip for parents is that they do not attempt to limit books to one age range. ”What we have found is that parents should not worry whether a title looks too young or too old for a child. If a book has caught their attention, then let them take it.“ Children, added Norris, often enjoy reading books that are easy for them to understand. “My father made me read The Hunt for Red October by Tom Clancy when I was much too young and I have never read another Clancy since,” said Norris.

1. What did Norris think prevents children from enjoying reading?
A.Children’s interest in handheld games.B.The declining market of the book industry.
C.Parents influence on children’s book selection.D.The growing popularity of online entertainment.
2. What do we learn about the new study?
A.It’s published to improve book sales.B.It mainly focuses on British families.
C.It involves many years’ efforts.D.It was conducted by Norris.
3. What should parents do to help kids get their favourite books at bookstores?
A.Introduce new books regularly.B.Let them talk with booksellers alone.
C.Discuss popular books with children.D.Often seek expert advice from booksellers.
4. What did Norris think of his father’s act?
A.It was totally wrong.B.It was quite necessary.
C.It aroused his interest in reading.D.It showed parents’ worries about kids.

In a heartwarming event that has touched the nation, a police officer in Warren, Michigan, was considered as a true hero by saving the life of an 18-month-old boy who had suddenly stopped breathing. This event happened on the evening of August 29 and has since touched the hearts of many.

Officer Brandan Fraser was on duty, focusing on speed and absent-minded driving, when he noticed a car speeding past him. What in the beginning seemed like a common traffic violation (违规) rapidly turned into a life-and-death crisis.

As Fraser came up to the car, he was met with a sad cry from a woman, who screamed, “We got a baby in here dying. Help! Help!” Both the woman and the man in the car were frightened as they handed over the baby boy, who appeared to be lifeless, not breathing and turning blue.

Rather than giving in to the pressure of the moment, Fraser immediately sprang into action. He examined the baby and doubted that he might be choking (窒息). Fraser quickly positioned the baby on his forearm and performed a series of back blows to force any obstruction (阻塞物) from the baby’s airway out.

However, the baby still showed no signs of breathing. Fraser’s heart raced, but his training kicked in here. After making sure the baby’s airway was clear, he then continued to perform CPR on the baby. His hands pressed the baby’s tiny chest and at the same time, he blew some air into the baby’s mouth to help make his heart beat again. Fraser continued these life-saving efforts tirelessly, knowing that every second counted.

Surprisingly, the baby began to breathe once more. Fraser described the moment, saying, “The baby started breathing, and you saw that color started coming back around his lips. You realized that something happened here, and we were heading in the right direction.”

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。作者通过自身经历,说明了纽约人和伦敦人对待戴口罩问题的不同态度。

6 . Three years ago, I made a journey from New York to London, with my daughter to see my mother. To my relief, the travel was far easier than I expected: the airports were empty, the plane was half-full and the airline staff kindly provided food and wine, which I drank greedily with a straw (吸管) while wearing the required face mask. What I did not expect was to be hit with a culture shock on arrival in London.

In New York, face masks are now an inseparable (不可分离的) part of life. Street signs declare “OUTSIDE WITH NO MASK? FORGET ABOUT IT!” Buildings carry more polite notices warning that anyone without a mask is banned (禁止). And even without them, almost everyone I see on the streets in my corner of Manhattan has their face covered. Strangers sometimes shout angrily at people who do not.

Indeed, there is such a strong sense of social pressure that in recent months I have worn a mask even when cycling alone, along Manhattan’s East river. And my daughter has taken to shopping online for “fashion masks”.

But not so in London. A new report issued by the Royal Society and the British Academy shows that, at the end of April, just 25 percent of Brits wore face masks in public places compared with 66 percent of Americans. We saw this for ourselves: in London, we appeared to be almost the only people wearing masks on the streets or in shops; even on public transport some seem to reject (拒绝) them.

Simon Roberts explains powerfully in a timely new book the Power of not Thinking. Habits matter deeply, but we hardly notice them — unless we travel. After a few days in London, I have started to “forget” my mask when I go outside. When I return to New York, I will have to relearn my habits all over again.

1. What does the underlined phrase “culture shock” in Paragraph 1 probably refer to?
A.The loss of culture.B.Confusion and difference.
C.The face mask.D.A huge welcome.
2. Which word best describes New Yorkers’ attitude towards mask wearing?
A.Serious.B.Indifferent.C.Annoyed.D.Doubtful.
3. In terms of mask wearing, which is the difference between Londoners and New Yorkers?
A.Londoners think mask wearing is only necessary on public transport.
B.None of the Londoners likes the idea of mask wearing.
C.New Yorkers should wear masks even if alone.
D.New Yorkers would react strongly to people without masks.
4. Why does the author mention the book the Power of not Thinking?
A.To stress the importance of realizing one’s habits with environmental changes.
B.To help people understand that each country has its own unique culture.
C.To encourage people to travel and explore the world.
D.To explain why there’s a culture shock.

Today everyone uses smartphones, desktop PCs and laptops at home, work and school. Exactly, it improves our communication, social media, entertainment and provides convenience to work. The computers, Internet, and smartphones have become part of our everyday life.

8 . “All work and no play make Jack a dull boy.” But now scientists have given us another warning: too much play with smart phones or computers makes you dull too.

“Many focus on the benefits of digital devices (设备) in education but ignore the costs,”said Patricia Greenfield from the University of California, “losing the ability to understand the emotions of other people is one of the costs.”Greenfield and her research team did an experiment. They worked with 105 children who spent about 4.5 hours in front of screens on a school day. The students were asked to describe the emotions towards the pictures of people who were happy, sad, angry, or scared. Then, half of them attended a five-day nature and science camp. There they had no smart phones, TV, or computers. The other half stayed in school and spent the five days as usual. Five days later, all the children took the test again.

Students who had been to the camp got about 5 percent more answers correct than they had done before the camp. But the other group of students didn’t show much improvement. The study is not perfect in some ways, said the researchers. But scientists say that the study is still a warning for us.

“Emotional skills develop in practice and the brain develops through real interaction,” said Professor Taylor, a professor at the University of San Francisco.

Researchers talked to 2,000 parents of children aged 2-16 in the UK about what activities their children could do confidently. The results were shocking: Their children could use a tablet (平板电脑) (59%) and work a mobile phone (57%) more confidently than they could tie their shoelaces (鞋带) (53%)! So, spend more time away from mobile phones and computers if you want to be an understanding friend, and not a member of what the Daily Mail called “Generation Helpless”.

1. What is a problem of using digital media in education according to Professor Greenfield?
A.Having bad relationships with family members.
B.Failing to focus on their schoolwork.
C.Being addicted to online games.
D.Being unable to understand others’ emotions.
2. How do scientists like the results of Greenfield’s experiment?
A.They are alarming.B.They are far from perfect.
C.They still need to be improved.D.They are quite reasonable.
3. What can be inferred from the text?
A.Students learned how to express emotions in the experiment.
B.Students attending the camp did much better in their studies.
C.Too much play with digital devices caused some concerns.
D.More than half of the children in the UK couldn’t tie their shoelaces.
4. What is the author’s advice for readers at the end of the text?
A.To use your smart phones and computers less.
B.To learn to tie your shoelaces confidently.
C.To learn to be an understanding friend.
D.To make more friends through your smart phones.
