Things I’ve Learned From My First Year Of High School

I just finished my first year of high school, and it has been     1     different from middle school. High school has brought me so many different experiences. Some I am grateful for, yet some have not been beneficial. However, all of them have taught me so many different things, and I would not have been able to     2     my first year of high school without them. The things I have learned have been so helpful to me and can also     3     to things outside of school.

1. You’re expected to demonstrate maturity and responsibility

High school teachers won’t     4     “hold your hand” as much as middle school teachers did. Your teachers may move faster through lessons. When you have questions or meet with     5     challenges, it’s important to speak up. If speaking up makes you nervous at first, you can start by using email to build your     6     level and confidence.

High school teachers enforce higher standards, and most don’t tolerate some of the behaviors that were acceptable in middle school. Again, the goal is to prepare you for college and real life. Even if the     7     seems tough at first, remember that you’re learning helpful and important life skills.

2. Find out who your true friends are

Genuine friends are friends that you can tell everything to and they will not tell anyone else without your permission. They are also there whenever you need them, whether that is to rant or you just need a shoulder to cry on. When you find your true friends, stick with them. The thing about friends is: quality over     8    .

To be honest, high school is not easy at first, but with time, you will get to appreciate and     9     everything around your experiences. The memory will never     10    , because it is the most memorable journey. I have learned so much during my first year of high school, and I am sure that I am going to learn a lot more.

It is common to have difficulties sleeping during the day. Humans are born     1     to sleep best at night and be awake during the day. However, modern work schedules require some people to try to adapt to the     2     schedule of shift work (轮班) — being awake at night and sleeping during the day.

In order to make this     3     acceptable to you, you need to pay special attention to your sleep environment and your preparation for sleep. If shift work is a necessary part of your work life, here are some suggestions that may help.

Arrange to sleep in a(n)     4     condition. This means you may have to turn off your phone, hang darkening curtains on the windows or wear a sleep eye mask, and ask your family and friends to     5     you alone while you sleep.

Fit in a nap. When your daytime sleep period is too short, taking a short nap of less than 30 minutes just before work or on a break has been shown to     6     energy and enhance performance.

Develop and follow a sleep routine. It’s best if you go to sleep and wake up at the same time every day. Try not to     7     this too much at weekends. Your body likes routine.

Take extra care to make healthy choices. You may be     8     to reach for unhealthy foods or nicotine (尼古丁) to stay awake or alcohol to try to sleep. But in the end these choices are more harmful than helpful.

If you have tried all these things and are still having problems getting enough     9     sleep during the day, talk to your doctor or a sleep specialist. Sometimes medical treatment may be helpful and safe. In other cases, there may be a potential sleep disorder that needs to be     10     as soon as possible.

What Can You Do with Used Coffee?

It’s the most popular drink worldwide. According to the British Coffee Association, approximately two billion cups of coffee are consumed every day. But after the beans have been picked, roasted and brewed, the grounds are often     1     of as waste. With the environment and resource consumption such hot topics at the moment, wouldn’t it be great if we could reuse this waste to make something useful? Well, you can.

The company OCHIS manufactures sunglasses. Max Havrylenko, founder of the company, was searching for a(n)     2     substance to plastic. He wanted to “solve the problem of plastic use and overconsumption”, he told the BBC. OCHIS fuses the grounds with vegetable oils, forming a bond. These are pressed into plates which are     3     and flexible. These are then cut into the arms and frames of the glasses. “Don’t worry,” he says. “They won’t     4     in the rain.”

Rosalie McMillan, a London jeweller, uses recycled coffee grounds along with gold and silver to make     5     jewellery. She mixes the coffee with oils and     6     it to heat and pressure to create a compound she calls “Curface”. Her website claims it has a “beautiful surface quality and texture” with similar     7     to hardwood.

What about a coffee cup made from them? Kaffeeform is a German-based company that transforms used grounds and renewable plant-based raw materials into a durable composite. This is     8     into a variety of containers and polished and finished, ready to be sold. So, you can drink your coffee from a cup made of coffee.

And it doesn’t stop there. Even without a factory, you can make use of coffee grounds. They     9     excellent fertilizer. You can mix them with water to make a sepia-toned paint. And the     10     goes on. So next time you finish your morning cup, save the grounds.

Peer Pressure

Teenage years are one of the most exciting yet confusing stages in a person’s life. You are no longer a child, yet not quite an adult. You are at a time of     1    , trying to find out your preferences, one of which, is your pastime.

Some pastimes have no moral implications. For example, shall we play basketball or soccer? However, there are other choices that need to be made based on your values, beliefs and principles in life. Some examples     2     attending a party where there will be alcohol and drugs freely given out, lying to your parents or even skipping school to watch a movie with some friends. How do you respond? Are you tempted to follow them?

Wanting to feel part of a group may force you to do things against your better     3    . However, it is right to say no to anything that is     4    , potentially causes harm or is hurtful to you or others. You may be afraid to refuse for fear of losing friends or being laughed at but do not let that stop you from standing up to peer pressure and being true to yourself. If your friends are true friends, they will respect your     5     and not force you to join them.

There are some steps you may take to steer clear from     6     peer pressure. Firstly, stay away from friends who force you to do things that you know are wrong. Instead, spend more time with friends who share the same values and principles as you. Next, be true to yourself and stand up for what you believe in. And if a     7     gets out of hand, do not hesitate to approach an adult you trust for help.

It may not always be easy to     8     peer pressure, but do know that you will feel good about yourself later. And even without you realising it, you may have been an activator in your group to bring about a positive change. Others in your group may just follow your lead and gain courage to always do the right thing.

With so much fake news online, it can sometimes be hard to figure out the truth. Concern about the phenomenon led some tech companies to     1     that they’ll crack down on fake news sites.

Fake news is a(n) common occurrence — you see it on your social media feeds, and even on forwarded messages on your phone’s group chat. There’s always one person in your group who likes to send     2     news from what can only be described as doubtful origins.

It was even named 2017’s word of the year by dictionary     3     , Collins, which describes fake news as “false, often sensational, information spread under the guise of news reporting”.

Here’s our advice on how to     4     a fake.

First, check the website and quality of the articles. Look at the     5     of the story and read other articles on the site — are they well written with proper citations or are they full of grammatical errors? You should also make sure that you’re on a legal news site. Some fake sites use     6     and even logos that are similar to those of real news organizations. For example, abcnews.go.com is real, while abenews.com. co is not.

Second, is it the whole truth and nothing but the truth? Sometimes a fake news story can have a sliver of truth to it, but most of the facts and figures are plotted from imagination. To make sure, search for the same story on several     7     websites to ensure nothing has been misrepresented.

Third, make sure it’s not satire (讽刺). If the story is on a satirical website, you should be aware that the     8     is humour and satire, and not misled

Being able to detect fake news is a crucial part of digital     9     and is an important aspect of life in the digital age. However, not all of the misinformation being passed along online is completely fictional, though some of it is. Snopes. com has been exposing false viral     10     since the mid-1990s, whether that’s fabricated (编造的) messages, distortions containing bits of truth and everything in between. Founder David Mikkelson warned in a Nov. 17 article not to sort everything into the “fake news” category. In one word, stay alert and objective.

There are many things we can do to become better learners. We all have two voices. Our inner voice tells us personal opinions and our outer voice deals with others’ opinions and things we have heard. If we listen to our inner voice too much, it can     1     block us from learning. If your inner voice is difficult to control, you can     2    disagree with it.
