Akram would spend his day taking care of sheep in the grassland. When night fell, he only had one thing to entertain himself—to talk to the stars, and study the shape of the constellation(星座). Afterwards, he would move back to the camp late at night and rest before starting the same routine the next day. In fact, his life formed an endless cycle of traveling between the grassland and a small camp house with a roof made of grass, but that had only been his routine for two years. Before that, he had been living in a small village with his family.
He was just ten but was homeless two years ago, and was forced to travel across his country to the neighboring country because of war, leaving behind a wonderful childhood on his own land.
After settling down in the valley in this new land, he had been used to his new life by accepting that he was taking care of sheep, something that he had never thought of doing be-fore. It was his job to lead the sheep to the grassland and let them eat grass. From time to time, he would take his sheep to a more remote valley, because it reminded him of his village and his grandfather.
Sometimes, he imagined losing himself in those sands blown by the wind, and going to another world, free of suffering, pain and cruelty. In this way he passed his time, keeping his memories alive by simply recalling them again and again, refusing to let them disappear.

My granddaughter Elizabeth lives in Washington state. When she was a rather naive 12 year old,she had spent the summer visiting her father near Atlanta,Georgia. Elizabeth's school was to start in about three weeks,so it was decided that she could stop and visit with us in Texas before returning to Washington just in time to start school.
Our visit would be rather short, but Elizabeth is such a joy that we enjoy every moment that we can share with her.
I can't imagine what the travel agent in Georgia was thinking when she scheduled 12-year-old Lizzy's flights. First, she was to fly from Atlanta to Houston William Hobby Airport, arriving about 9:00 p.m. Then she was to depart for San Antonio about 11:00 p.m. from Houston's George H.W. Bush Inter. Continental Airport. However,Bush is some 25 miles across town from Houston Hobby Airport, and there was no ground transportation available between the two.
The lady who sat next to Liz on the plane learned of the situation and, sensing Liz's worry, gave her a phone card and $10. 00. When Elizabeth called us and explained her situation,we advised her to contact a police officer there at the terminal.
She did. He put her in touch with Ms Joy Fears,a Continental gate agent. Initially,Ms Fears was going to put Elizabeth in a taxi to make the cross-town trip. Liz had $20. 00 or so that her dad had given her upon leaving Atlanta Hartsfield Airport, plus the $10. 00 that her seatmate had given her—enough for the taxi fare to Bush Airport. However,no doubt considering Liz's age and the late hour,Ms Fears decided to show her kindness by taking an enjoyable“do it yourself”approach.
First Ms Fears got a meal voucher(代金券) and got Lizzy fed. Then she proceeded to round up Liz's baggage, then put both the luggage and our granddaughter in her private vehicle. She went so far as to personally deliver Liz to the Continental gate at Bush, and saw to it that she was properly checked in and on her way for the 55 minute flight from Houston to San Antonio.

6 . Today what I want to do is to share the story of my own.
I used to be the shyest person in the world. I hid behind my elder sister whenever I had to speak to a stranger. When I was asked to speak in class, I could hardly breathe, much less speak.
Then, in seventh grade, my sister suggested I take voice lessons. After thinking carefully, I did and tried to keep it a secret. I began a series of exercises, making it so strange that I couldn't help laughing. I learned how to howl(长嚎) like a cowboy and snort like an old lady.
By playing around with sound in the class, I gained confidence in the part of me that had been a point of embarrassment before my voice.
A few months later, I was asked to sing for some old people. I thought I would do better than before because of the voice lessons. I opened my mouth and —nothing. I couldn't remember the lyrics! My face turned red. Then the thought came into my mind: I've embarrassed myself enough in front of this crowd. There's really nothing else to lose. So, for my second song. I just relaxed and felt the energy of the song lift me. And I did much better. After that, I started singing to myself as loudly as I could in my room. That's something I had never done before. I am not a shy person anymore. What I really want to say is singing has made me more outgoing.

It was a hot day in the middle of July. I decided to walk to the neighborhood store where it sold my favorite thing, ice cream. I pulled a friend towards the ice cream store, almost passing out from the burning sun on the way.
As we walked on, my friend kept saying that it was too hot. She thought that she was stupid to decide to come with me to buy ice cream. I felt sorry and tried to encourage her. “We're almost there. Just think of the cool and sweet taste of ice cream in your mouth. It'll be worth the walk,” I told her. But I had to admit that the store was quite a distance from our houses. During the journey, my mouth began to become dry and I wanted to drink.
When we were about a block away from the store, I noticed an old lady who was walking in our direction. She was about 70 years old. She had a big back problem, so she was unable to keep her back straight. She was struggling, pushing a shopping cart full of things like the soap, bread and water. With each step toward her, we began to see her appearance more clearly. It appeared that she was often unhappy and easy to get angry.
I looked at my friend to see if she had noticed her. I could see that she had and that she disliked the old lady due to the lady's appearance. As we approached the lady pushing the shopping cart, my friend directed me away from the old lady and the cart.
I began to observe other passers-by. They were also trying to avoid her. Suddenly I heard a terrible sound behind me. I quickly turned around to see what it was. I found the lady's cart had been knocked over by something on the ground.

A couple from Miami, Bill and Simone Butler, spent sixty-six days in a life-raft(救生艇) in the seas of Central America after their boat sank.
Twenty-one days after they left Panama in their boat, Simony, they met some whales(鲸鱼). “They started to hit the side of the boat,” said Bill, “and then suddenly we heard water.” Two minutes later, the boat was sinking. They jumped into the life-raft and watched the boat go under the water.
For twenty days they had tins of food, biscuits, and bottles of water. They also had a fishing-line and a machine to make salt water into drinking water — two things which saved their lives. They caught eight to ten fish a day and ate them raw(生的). Then the line broke. “So we had no more fish until something very strange happened. Some sharks(鲨鱼) came to feed, and the fish under the raft were afraid and came to the surface. I caught them with my hands.”
About twenty ships passed them, but no one saw them. After fifty days at sea their life-raft was beginning to break up. Then suddenly it was all over. A fishing boat saw them and picked them up. 10 . I discovered the power of fear when I became stuck to my driveway, as if my feet were crazy-glued to the cement (水泥). As much as I tried, I could not move them. The realization that my daughters were playing in Nancy's house, just one-half block away, paralyzed (麻痹) my legs, making me unable to move when I neared the end of our driveway. Dense, black smoke was rising from behind the Sycamore Maple trees on the other side of the street and was enveloping three houses, making them barely visible. Nancy's house was one of them.
I tried to call out for my daughters, hoping to see them run safely to my arms, but my voice was also stuck-stuck in my throat with no intention of coming out. There I stood, helpless, paralyzed and silenced by fear, unable to protect the two lttle girls I loved more than even I had realized.
Although trapped in a body that couldn't move or speak, I could still hear. I could hear other mothers anxiously calling their children. I could hear a frightening silence that covered the neighborhood instead of the usual happy voices of children. And, finally, I could hear the alarm of the fire engine. As the alarm announced, "We're on our way," it instantly dissolved the crazy glue that had held my feet to the cement and it unlocked the soundproof box that had silenced my voice. I was free to make sure my daughters were safe.
As I continued down the driveway, two little girls, my two little girls, ran toward me from across the street. They had come home to tell me about the fire in the garage next to Nancy's house. Not only did my feet and voice work now, but my eyes were also in good working order and had no trouble producing tears.
