When I was a little girl, I spent memorable holidays with my grandmother, who lived in a small village. She was a farmer with a stooped (弯曲的) back that made it seem like she was always leaning forward to examine something. Early in the morning, she would tie a cloth around her waist and set out to the farm. I would skip breathlessly alongside, trying to keep up. On our way, she would greet everyone we passed.
There was the standard greeting, “Did you wake up on the right foot this morning?” Then, the more personalized greetings. To Patriarch Kosi who sat under the mango tree, she would ask, “Are the grandchildren in good health?” To the Bean Stew Seller who was preparing to serve breakfast, she would inquire, “Are your boys well?”
Sometimes, the greetings were spoken soothingly (安慰地). When we walked past the widow, Dada Mawusi, many months after her husband’s death, Grandmother would say directly, “How is your grieving?” She didn’t like to beat around the bush. The greeting made more sense to her to acknowledge the woman’s suffering, and in doing so, empathize (理解) with her.
The people that Grandmother greeted would respond similarly. “I see you have your granddaughter with you today. How is her father?” or “I see you have woken up before the cock’s crow today. May it be a fruitful day at the farm.” As a young girl, I thought these greetings were unnecessarily time-consuming. What I now realize is that the greetings increased a sense of belonging. My grandmother taught me that there is always time to greet someone before getting down to business. You can always take a few extra seconds to say a greeting to a person. We enrich our society when we acknowledge the unique presence of one another.

3 . Levi Lamb is a teenager with a big heart and an eggcellent idea that has enabled him to help people who are homeless. The 12-year-old North Beach resident has developed his own farm fresh egg delivery business servicing northern suburb residents on a fortnightly (两周一次的) basis. And in the alternate weeks when Levi doesn’t deliver eggs, he and his customers work together to help people who are homeless by running food charity. “In the weeks I don’t deliver egg we connect with my community and collect cup of soups, spaghetti and my eggs, of course, and we give the food to people experiencing homelessness.” he said.
Since starting the business in January, Levi’s Eggs has gained a fantastic reach online and has proven a cracking business for the young man. The Carine High School student developed the business to get some extra pocket money and stared selling fresh es to family members before advertising the unique delivery service on Facebook.
Levi’s goal was to make enough money to make the business profitable (赢利的), which he said he had achieved but jokingly would not give away the fact how many customers he had. “It varies each fortnight, but a good business man never counts his chickens before they hatch,” he said. “My eggs are only two to three days old when I deliver them; we ensure that we collect the eggs direct off the truck and deliver them to my customers’ door the same day,” he said.

Agatha was in the library, reading the Girl Detective series, when she noticed something strange. Her best friends, Timmy and Florence, were talking to each other in whispers while keeping a good, safe distance from her! When she waved at them, they looked away.
Things only got stranger in art class. Timmy and Florence went to sit at a different table from Agatha busy painting and glanced at her when they thought she wasn’t looking.
Now, Agatha considered herself to be something of a detective. After all, she had read many detective stories for children and even had an old broken magnifying glass(放大镜)abandoned by her father. When the rest of the class went out for lunch, she slipped to Timmy and Florence’s table and examined it carefully with the magnifying glass.
There was paint, and red and pink construction paper. What could they be doing? This was definitely a mystery that needed solving!
After lunch Timmy and Florence chatted to her as if nothing was going on, but they kept smiling at her in a slightly strange way. Of course, Agatha could have asked them what they were up to, and they might have told her -but she wouldn’t have a chance to become a detective!
On the way home from school, Florence and her mum happened to walk ahead of Agatha and her mum. Agatha saw them go into the bookshop. Strange, again. Florence didn’t read much—no matter how many detective stories Agatha recommended to her!
The next day at school, Agatha kept an eye on her friends and tried to work out their mystery, but they seemed determined to keep things secret. She asked them if they would like to play with her after school, but they said they couldn’t because they were busy. Even more mysterious…
When Agatha’s mum came to pick her up after school, she was so lost in the unsolved mystery that she hardly noticed her busy father was coming along, which was unusual. When they arrived home, her father said she could go into the living room.

5 . College wasn’t in the cards for Blount when she graduated from high school in 1976. Her parents encouraged her to take some training courses and become an X-ray technician (技师), saying it would be a steady career. They were right, she said, though she felt she would have made a good P. E. teacher, too. But before she decided to become an X-ray tech, she discussed the possibility of college with a adviser, who suggested Reinhardt University in Georgia. “Reinhardt was always in the back of my mind.” she said.
At age 33 Blount met her husband, Ben. He loved golf, so she picked it up as a hobby. But Blount soon became addicted to the game. Golf became part of her weekly routine.
Years later, her husband and her father died within a few months. She moved to Colorado to teach skiing full-time. But she found herself aimless and a little bit lost. Then one day, she came across a yearbook from Reinhardt University-another sign “calling to Reinhardt,” she said. Meanwhile, her golf game was getting boring. She asked a young caddie(球童) at her club where he played. Reinhardt University, he told her. “There it is again,” Blount thought.
The idea of starting school at 62 was challenging. But “the golf was calling,” she said, so after meeting with a Reinhardt coach and showing off her skills, she devoted herself to starting over as a college freshman.
She’s been with the team now for a year. Blount said she’s just grateful for the opportunity-one she earned with skill and determination. “I’m getting to live the dream,” she said. “I look around here and I can’t believe I get to do it.”

Kareem sighed as he counted his money again. He was still short of fifty dollars to buy the latest Speedster X bike. In order to save his pocket money to replace his old bike, he had been packing sandwiches to school the last three months.
“How can I get that fifty dollars?” he thought to himself. His mind was wondering when Mother’s voice disturbed his thoughts. “Kareem, I just ran into Aunty Kim, our neighbour who just moved in next door. Her son, Shawn, will cycle to school next week. Could you show him the shortcut to school later? It’s Saturday anyway!” Hearing this, Kareem had no option but to obey it, He knew Mother had probably already volunteered his service to Aunty Kim. “Oh, here’s a mail from your Grandma. Open it!” added Mother.
Kareem’s grandmother lived abroad and she would send him photos and cards. He opened the envelope and pulled out a greeting card. Incredibly, a fifty dollar note slipped out as well! Kareem was wild with joy. Waving the note in the air, he shouted happily, “Enough money for my bike!”
At 2 p. m. Kareem met Shawn as arranged by their mothers. The sooner he finished this task, the sooner he could go to the bike shop. While the boys were cycling, a squirrel (松鼠) appeared behind a parked car and dashed across the road so suddenly that the boys knocked into each other and fell down heavily. Kareem said regretfully, “I forgot to warn you about the squirrel population here.” As Kareem was lifting up his broken bike, Shawn cried anxiously, “Oh, my poor bike! It’s completely broken.”
Watching Shawn carrying the disabled bike home in silence, Kareem hurried to the bike shop for his dream bike. The sign “Half Price for Old Models” in the shop attracted his eyes.
