1 . Over the years, you've probably known a good number of people-some for only a short period and others for a much longer time. If you spend a moment thinking back on the people who have meant the very most to you, selflessness will be the same thing they share. There might have been a person who really believed in you. Someone taught you something important. Someone cared for you in his or her own way. Someone has simply always remained your friend.
Many years ago, I traveled through the beautiful, history-rich country of Greece. With only a small backpack, I stayed at youth hotels, visiting city after city. One day, a shoulder strap on my backpack broke. I didn't speak any Greek and the owner didn't speak any English. I went to the front desk of my hotel and tried to ask him if there might be a shop nearby where I could have it repaired. He was clearly very busy. But he asked someone to watch over the front desk and then signed to me to follow him. We walked together for a few blocks, arriving at a little shoe repair shop. Within ten minutes, my backpack was repaired, and then the hotel owner insisted on paying for it!
I was shocked by this powerful, unexpected kindness. More than any other thing, it's what I recall most often when I think about my trip to Greece. Sometimes, you may not have even realized how much your selflessness toward someone has mattered. As the saying goes, "To the world you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world."

A tornado(龙卷风) hit a small town nearby, leaving many families completely destroyed. Afterward all the local newspapers carried many human interest stories featuring some of the families who suffered the most difficult period to appeal to people’s attention and assistance.
One Sunday, a particular picture especially touched me. A young woman stood in front of a simple mobile home, with a depressed expression on her face. A young boy, seven or eight years old, stood at her side, eyes downcast. Hiding behind her skirt was a tiny girl who stared into the camera, wide eyes with confusion and fear. The article that went with the picture gave the clothing size of each family member. With growing interest, I noticed that sizes of the family closely matched ours. This would be a good opportunity to teach my seven-year-old twins, Brad and Brett, and three-year-old Meghan to help those less fortunate than themselves.
"We have so much. And these poor people now have nothing," I said. "We’ll share what we have with them. " I brought three large boxes down from the room upstairs and placed them on the living room floor. Meghan watched seriously, as the boys and I filled one of the boxes with canned goods and food. While I sorted through our clothes, I encouraged the boys to go through their toys and donate some of their less favorite things. The boys were pleased to join. Brad rose and went to his room fast. He came back bringing his action figures that he played with not so frequently. Brett also jumped up and ran to fetch some of his Matchbox cars and airplane models. Meghan watched quietly as the boys piled up abandoned toys.
The boys placed the objects they had chosen to donate into one of the boxes while I filled the third box with clothes. Meghan walked up with Lucy, her worn, faded, best-loved rag doll hugged tightly to her chest. "I’ll help you find something for the little girl, too," I said to little Meghan.

"Mommy, I will give Lucy to them," Meghan turned to me.

Soapy sat on a seat in Madison Square, New York, and looked up at the sky. A deal leaf fell onto his arm. Winter is coming, and Soapy knew that he must make his plans. He moved unhappily on his sea.
He wanted three months in a nice, warm prison, with food and good friends. This was how he usually spent his winters. And now it was time, because, at night on his seat in the square, three newspapers did not keep out the cold.
So Soapy decided to go to prison, and at once began to try his first plan. It was usually easy. He ate dinner in an expensive restaurant. Then he told them he had no money and they called a policeman. Nice and easy, with no trouble.
So Soapy left his seat, and walked slowly along the street. Soon he came to a bright restaurant on Broadway. Ah! This was all right. He just had to get to a table in the restaurant and sit down. That was all, because, when he sat down, people could only see his coat and his shirt, which were not very old. Nobody could see his trousers. He thought about the meal---not too expensive, but good.
But when Soapy went into the restaurant, the waiter saw Soapy’s dirty old trousers and terrible shoes.
Strong hands turned him round and helped him out into the street again.

4 . All Luciano Faggiano wanted when he purchased the seemingly unremarkable building was to open a restaurant. The only problem was the toilet. Sewage (污物) kept backing up. So Mr. Faggiano asked his two sons to help him dig a trench (沟) and uncover the problem. He predicted the job would take about a week. “We found some underground rooms, so we kept digging,” said Mr. Faggiano, 60.
One week quickly passed, as the father and sons discovered a tomb of the Messapians, who lived centuries ago. Soon, the family discovered a room used to store grain by the ancient Romans.
Mr. Faggiano did not initially tell his wife about the extent of the work. His wife soon became suspicious (怀疑的).“We had all these dirty clothes, every day,” she said. “I didn't understand what was going on.”
After watching the Faggiano men pull away debris (碎片) in the back seat of the family car, neighbors also became suspicious and informed the authorities. Officials arrived and stopped the digging, warning Mr. Faggiano against operating an unapproved archaeological (考古的) work site. Mr. Faggiano responded that he was just looking for a sewage pipe.
A year passed. Finally, Mr. Faggiano was allowed to continue his search for the sewage pipe on condition that officials observed the work. An underground treasure house came into view, as the family uncovered ancient vases, an ancient ring with symbols and more. Today, the building is the Faggiano Museum, an independent archaeological museum authorized by the government.
Mr. Faggiano is now satisfied with his museum, but he has not forgotten about the restaurant. A few years later, he finally found his sewage pipe. It was, indeed, broken. Last Saturday our class went hiking in a countryside. We meet at our school gate and set off at 8:00 am. On the way, we were singing and laughing happily while a girl suddenly fell into a deep hole. She felt so frightening and even burst into tears. One of my classmate found a long rope and we got him out. Fortunately, she didn’t suffer seriously injuries, but it seemed that her ankle slightly twisted. We managed to sending her to the nearest hospital. It is an experience we’ll never forget it, though we didn’t enjoy ourselves very much that day.

10 . I got into the teaching profession purely by choice. I was then in 9th grade when my mathematics teacher asked me to take a class for a few students to whom the subject seemed difficult. And believe me, I enjoyed the entire teaching session. I never knew teaching would be so interesting. I loved my freshmen and was delighted to teach my so-called students who came up with lots of good questions.
After my post-graduation, I worked as a software developer with a public sector(部门) in Bangalore for a few years. But I realized that no job could provide me with the satisfaction that I experienced while teaching and training. I always wanted to connect with a wider group of people. In fact, I felt it was a timely realization for me to choose the teaching profession. I applied to a few colleges, and finally I was chosen as a lecturer, and I had to lecture graduate and post-graduate students in a college.
On the first day, I was nervous thinking that I had to teach the senior classes. But now I can say that giving lectures was one of the best experiences of my life. I was a Computer Science and Information Technology lecturer, but I tried to help my students with subjects that were not within my domain(范围). It was a new feeling to me every morning before I went to the classes. I used to feel energized and excited thinking that the class would be lit up with bright faces to greet me, “Good morning, Madam.”
To me each day was a new beginning, with new feelings, new experiences and new queries(疑问). I loved to explore their young minds and read their inquisitive faces when a particular topic seemed tough. It was extremely challenging to motivate them to participate, think critically, question and also respect others’ points of view. Though few things never seemed easy, it was extremely exciting to assure them that they really can. That is the reason I love to teach.

C.New feelings, experiences and queries made her days new. |
D.She was unwilling to solve her students' questions beyond her domain. |
A.Why I Love to Teach | B.What My Life Is Like |
C.How I Was Chosen as a Lecturer | D.My First Lesson as a Teacher |
