This story happened in a small village in North America, where a disabled boy named Tom lived with his parents. When Tom was born, his right leg was a little twisted (变形的). When Tom could neither walk nor stand upright for two years, his parents took him to a doctor. After a careful examination, the doctor said complete recovery was impossible. So the doctor made a structure of iron rods (杆) that could be tied through Tom’s shoe to a belt over his knee. With the help of the structure, Tom could stand properly and walk at times, and his life became a little easier than before. But one thing always bothering him was that he could not play like other children, although he was still happy.

On the way to Tom’s school, there was a small flower shop. Its owner was a kind old man. In this shop, there lived his five small pet puppies. One of the puppies was lame (瘸的). It always dragged its leg and followed the rest of the puppies. Tom often stood in front of this flower shop after school and watched the puppies. Of the five, Tom liked that little lame puppy most.

One day, Tom saw a board hanging in front of the shop. It read “Puppies for Sale at $50” Tom went straight into the shop. Pointing at the lame puppy, he asked the old man to sell it to him. Tom took a $5 note out of his pocket and gave it to the old man. “I only have $5 now and you keep it. I’ll pay 50 cents a month for the rest,” Tom said. “But it is a puppy which will limp for the rest of its life. It will never be able to run with you or play with you in the park. Do you still want to buy it?” the old man asked in surprise.

Tom told the old man firmly, “Yes, I want this puppy.” Then the old man returned Tom’s $5 and said, “If you want this puppy, I’ll give it to you for free.”

Paragraph 1:
Tom got a little upset after hearing this from the old man.

2 . Jason Sotiris calls it “the moment”. It comes when a child has been in hospital for days, or weeks, or more. And suddenly something magical happens.

“There’s a knock on the door,” he says. “You look up, and you see your favourite superhero — Iron Man or Captain Marvel. And that reaction is what we call ‘the moment’.” A visit from a superhero is pretty exciting in itself. But these superheroes bring more than just high-fives.

“This superhero says...hey, I’ve heard about you,” Jason says. “You have been so brave that you have earned a spot among other superheroes. The only thing you need is a costume.” And the superhero presents the child with a Supertee, which can help them tap into their own natural superpowers.

Jason Sotiris created Supertee when his daughter Angela was hospitalised with a rare cancer after her first birthday, and he came up with the idea to create a T-shirt designed to make changing clothes easy. Supertee is X-ray friendly with underarms that open easily for temperature checks and sides which come apart quickly with removable buttons. Best of all, it builds courage. The superhero theme was inspired by Jason’s three-year-old son who dressed up as Batman to save his younger sister.

“There is research showing pretend play, like being a superhero, helps a child put psychological distance between themselves and the problem at hand. It’s known as ‘The Batman Effect’ and allows children to step back from a problem and think about it from multiple angles, seeing different options for a solution. It helps fight boredom and keep up spirits for children,” said Jason.

Recipients have included eight-year-old Indyana Wedderburn, who has a rare and incurable form of disease that has led to frequent brain operation. “It’s more than just a T-shirt. It has given the family strength,” says her mum. “His creation is genius. Jason cares because he can relate to what it’s like.”

Whenever I travel and get on the plane, I usually carry two bags. A big handbag or a tote, and a small shoulder bag. The small shoulder bag is where I put the important stuff, like my passport, so I could take it with me wherever I go. I had a 7-hour layover in Stockholm for my flight to Barcelona. It was enough time to visit the old city and come back to the airport. I was on my way to purchase a train ticket when I realized my shoulder bag was missing...I have never been so scared in my life. I felt stuck. Without a passport, I couldn't go back home to the US and I couldn't move forward to my final destination in Spain either.

The only thing I could think of was to go back to the arrival gate. I went back to the sitting area and looked around, but it was nowhere to be found. I saw the lady who sat beside me on the plane and asked her if she had seen it and unfortunately, she said no. There was a deli(熟食店) stand right next to the safety fence in the waiting area, so I asked the deli clerk if he had seen anything and to my surprise, he said yes! He said he had given it to an airport employee though. I explained to the first airport employee that I saw what happened, and she immediately called someone for me, as she was already aware of the situation.

After a short session of waiting, I saw two men in uniform walking towards me and one of them holding my bag. He asked me a couple of questions just to make sure I was the right person and after I answered correctly, he handed it back to me...I was so grateful! I could not stop thanking him. I realized the reason why I lost it was that the strap broke off and it fell on the floor. I went back to the food clerk to thank him too and to ask how he found it.

Paragraph 1:

The food clerk looked at me and told me about that.

I couldn’t bear it any longer! My best friend had gone for lunch with the most popular girl in class, leaving me to eat my tuna sandwich alone in the library. Worse still, during dance class, my partner, a boy, refused to hold my hand and bad mouthed me behind my back, further feeding my anger. It was, without a doubt, my worst day in school. I was hurt and mad, and looking for a target to release my anger.

When I got home from school , Mother had baked peanut butter cookies and piled them up on a plate. She even artfully decorated each one with royal icing and topped it with sugar. “Couldn’t you have made chocolate. chip?” I said moodily. “I could have,” she replied from the laundry room, “but I made peanut butter ones. Eat them while they’re still hot, sweetie.” Although I thought Mother was rather unthoughtful, I caved in and took a few bites unwillingly in the end. Later, when she pulled a grilled chicken from the oven and sang a merry tune, I somehow got annoyed again — Never mind that Mother had busied herself the whole afternoon with the cooking just to put this hot meal on the table. I wanted hamburgers.

“Nobody even likes that kind of food, Mum! Why didn’t you make hamburgers?” I complained. Mother took a deep breath, ran her fingers through her messy hair and looked into my eyes with a puzzled look. “Sweetheart, you’ve never complained about having it before. What’s up?” she said matter-of-factly.

It was from there that all went downhill. I screamed and complained nonstop until Mother hit her limit. Unable to contain her anger,” No dinner for you! Go to bed now !”she exploded. It was the first time that Mother had got mad at me. Nobody seemed to care about me, including my beloved mother! Ultimately, we had a shouting match in the hallway. I stormed to my bedroom, anger mounting up within me.

As a young boy, I was carefree. Every vacation I looked forward to two things—seeing my grandpa and hearing his wonderful stories. My grandpa was a very good storyteller. He had worked various odd jobs when he was young and wove his adventures and misadventures into fantastic tales. These wonderful tales colored my childhood.

As I grew up, I had to admit that Grandpa’s stories went on a little long, even a little boring and gradually lost their magic. However, not wanting to upset him, my brother and I would sometimes take turns sitting in the living room, listening to grandpa tell his stories.

When my grandpa was approaching 91, he suffered from serious memory-loss. It was kind of what doctors called dementia (痴呆), probably the earliest stage of Alzheimer’s disease. Following the doctor’s directions, we moved him into a Sunrise Assisted Living Community, where he could get a better care. After that, grandpa hardly came to our house.

One weekend before my grandpa’s birthday, I came to visit him. Seeing grandpa sitting in his armchair, dull-looking, I was consumed with mixed feelings. I wheeled grandpa to the sunshine in the courtyard, talking to him. He couldn’t express himself clearly and spoke in short bursts, but I listened to him patiently and carefully just as I used to be a little boy.

It was then that I noticed a shadow box with some old and yellowish photos in it. I picked one up, in which my brother, several boys in our neighborhood, and I were playing basketball with grandpa cheering us on twenty years before. My mind flashed back to those beautiful memories. Back then, Grandpa was in good physical condition and we were all wearing basketball jerseys, playing and laughing with abandon. I presented the photo to my grandpa, pointing at each member and reminding him of their names. Incredibly, grandpa could speak out the name of every player. I even caught a soft light in grandpa’s eyes and a smile on his lips.

Kareem sighed as he counted his money again. He was still short of fifty dollars to buy the latest Speedster X bike. In order to save his pocket money to replace his old bike, he had been packing sandwiches to school the last three months.

“How can I get that fifty dollars?” he thought to himself. His mind was wondering when Mother’s voice disturbed his thoughts. “Kareem, I just ran into Aunty Kim, our neighbour who just moved in next door. Her son, Shawn, will cycle to school next week. Could you show him the shortcut to school later? It’s Saturday anyway!” Hearing this, Kareem had no option but to obey it, He knew Mother had probably already volunteered his service to Aunty Kim. “Oh, here’s a mail from your Grandma. Open it!” added Mother.

Kareem’s grandmother lived abroad and she would send him photos and cards. He opened the envelope and pulled out a greeting card. Incredibly, a fifty dollar note slipped out as well! Kareem was wild with joy. Waving the note in the air, he shouted happily, “Enough money for my bike!”

At 2 p. m. Kareem met Shawn as arranged by their mothers. The sooner he finished this task, the sooner he could go to the bike shop. While the boys were cycling, a squirrel (松鼠) appeared behind a parked car and dashed across the road so suddenly that the boys knocked into each other and fell down heavily. Kareem said regretfully, “I forgot to warn you about the squirrel population here.” As Kareem was lifting up his broken bike, Shawn cried anxiously, “Oh, my poor bike! It’s completely broken.”

Watching Shawn carrying the disabled bike home in silence, Kareem hurried to the bike shop for his dream bike. The sign “Half Price for Old Models” in the shop attracted his eyes.
