Ava cried out for help and called 911 while pounding her hand against Noah’s back, trying to save her son. But nothing was changing. Suddenly sat all man appeared next to them and took Noah from Ava’s arms. His truck was parked behind them. He held Noah with the boy’s back against his stomach. During my sixth-grade year, I was nervous about many things. I was afraid of being a role model on campus. I was afraid of going to a middle school the following year. But nothing compared to my biggest fear of all… puberty (青春期). I was getting to the age where my voice would start changing. At first, I was excited for my voice to get deeper. But then I learned that before your voice gets deeper, it can sometimes crack(嘶哑).
The first time it happened to me I was so embarrassed, but to my surprise, my friends didn’t make fun of me. In fact, they didn’t even mention it. That was reality. But in my self- conscious sixth-grade mind I was certain they were going to spend all day making fun of me behind my back. They were not having the same problem controlling their voices.
After my first voice crack experience, I was determined to make sure it wouldn’t happen again. At least not in public. So, I began clearing my throat before I spoke. Limiting how much I spoke and clearing my voice before I spoke made my break and lunch experiences much less stressful. This was great but there was a larger problem. I was more scared about having a voice crack during class.
There were reasons why having a voice crack in class was scarier. One of these reasons was that our class had a group of popular girls. Having a voice crack in front of them was a fear. Unfortunately, one day my worst frightening dream came true. It was about halfway through the year, when I was happy to have made it so long without a bad voice crack incident.
That day, when I walked through the door, the first thing I noticed was that we had a substitute(代课)teacher. I immediately started thinking about how the sub would need to take attendance. My permanent (长期的)teacher never had to. Since he already knew each student and where they sat, he just had everyone sit down in their assigned seat, and marked “absent” the students whose seats were empty.

4 . On the outside, 12-year-old Luna seems like your average kid. It’s not until you get to know her that you learn that Luna is anything but average.
Born with a heart defect (缺陷) called dextrocardia, Luna has had three open-heart operations and continues to go for her interests in art and fashion. But when Luna was approached by athletic shoe company Saucony to design a shoe for sale across the country, it came as quite a surprise.
“This is so incredible. I got to use my art and creativity for something new that I’d never thought I’d be able to design,” Luna said. She is one of six patients from Boston Children’s Hospital (BCH) who have partnered with Saucony to design their own shoes to launch the Shoes with Soul Movement.
“Rather than just a donation, we wanted to create an experience and a moment that would not only raise money, but also awareness to highlight all the amazing work that’s being done at BCH,” says Chris, Saucony’s vice president. “Specifically, we wanted to give some of the BCH kids an opportunity to share their story and their talents with the world.”
Luna’s design is fashion. “On the tongue, they digitalized one of my drawings, and then on bottom it’s a really bright pink color, and on the inside, the sole (鞋底) of the shoe is actually another drawing I did of a sunset,” she said. “Thinking about kids everywhere around the world wearing my shoes is amazing. It blows my mind.”
The income from the shoe sales will benefit the Boston Children’s Hospital Cardiac Fitness Program, which encourages kids to “find your possible” through personalized exercise programs designed for each individual patient’s heart condition.
“It feels really good to help people and it’s really something I can relate to,” says Luna. “The advice I would give a kid or someone like me is never to give up. There are a lot of kids out there with your condition and you’re not alone.”
