1 . Martin Strel is a long-distance swimmer, best known for swimming the entire length of various rivers. He was born in Slovenia in 1954. He taught himself to swim when he was 6 and became a professional marathon swimmer in 1978. Martin holds Guinness World Records for swimming the Danube River, the Mississippi River, the Yangtze River and the Amazon River.
Of all his achievements, the greatest is his Amazon River swim. The Amazon is known as the largest, longest and most dangerous river in the world. Several long-distance swimmers had attempted to swim it, but all failed. Martin decided to risk his life and make history. He wanted to show the world that people can achieve their dreams and goals with hard work and persistence (毅力).
On April 7, 2007, Martin Strel completed his Amazon River swim all the way from Atalaya (Peru) to the Atlantic Ocean at Belem (Brazil). He struggled with the river for 66 days and totally swam 3,274 miles. He became a worldwide hero.
Many people still cannot believe what he has done so far, so that's why they sometimes describe him as “Fishman”, “Human Fish” or even “The Craziest Man in the World.”
In 2009, American filmmakers produced a documentary called Big River Man. And the book, The Man Who Swam the Amazon, has been sold in many countries worldwide. It's an inspirational story of perseverance and passion.
Martin Strel does not make much money from swimming. Instead, he swims to teach people about the importance of keeping water clean.
Martin has always been looking for the challenges of the impossible. At present, he is training for a new challenge -— swimming the Grand Canyon.

3 . Anita is a mother who clearly likes her son. From the moment she found out that she was to give birth to her son with a cleft (裂口), she protected him, loved him, and dreamed of the day his lip would be healed.
Anita lives in a small village about two hours from Cagayan de Oro in the Philippines. She already had six children when they found out she would have Aljay, her seventh.
When the doctor performed an ultrasound (超声波) in Anita’s seventh month of pregnancy (怀孕), he saw that her unborn child had a cleft. “He told me to get rid of him.” Anita said, tears pouring down her cheeks. “I told him that you don’t just give birth and then give it up. I told him I want this child.”
When Anita showed her new baby to her neighbors, they were horrified. “Your son looks like a monster (怪物)” they told me, and “to get rid of him”. In many places around the world there is a widespread and severe social shame associated with cleft conditions and families are often forced to hide newborns from their family members and communities.
Hearing her son being laughed at was not the worst of it. “When I tried to feed him, the milk came out of his nose. I was worried that he could die.”
Aljay survived and loved school, but what he suffered from the other children was hard to bear. They teased him, laughed at him, and called him a monster.
When the teasing became too much Anita would take Aljay to the cornfields so he was hidden from view and nobody could tease him anymore. When the family heard that Operation Smile was coming to Cagayan de Oro they began saving money to afford transport to get to the city. At the medical mission Anita finally received news she was waiting for: Aljay was healthy enough to receive surgery. After just over 45 minutes his lip was repaired and his life was transformed.
Today Aljay is a happy and cheerful boy who loves going to school and playing with other children.

When school was over, the day was fading and it started to drizzle(毛毛雨). I stood at the school gate, with a loaded backpack on my shoulders. It was Friday again: a weekend of joy with unlimited sleeping hours and dinner courses specially made to my taste, a weekend at home. I waved goodbye to my friends as they jumped into their fathers’ warm and comfortable cars. Curiously, this gave rise to a disturbing feeling in me. It was not exactly what they called jealousy, but something like dismay(沮丧). I knew all I could expect was an old bike Mom would ride along on, with the badly-oiled chain creaking(嘎吱作响) against the wheel to announce her arrival.
Every Friday when Mom came to pick me up for the weekend, it was a moment full of great expectation and great unease. I always felt my face burning as we rode our way in and out of the numerous cars and saw my friends’ faces sticking out of the car windows. It was like stepping into a ballroom with beautifully dressed ladies and finding yourself in a smelly T-shirt.
To tell you the truth, Mom is quite a headache once in a while. She just looks a homely middle-aged housewife. Being a practitioner of DIY, she knits most of my sweaters, chiefly in old styles. Whenever caught by some curious classmates asking what brand my sweaters are, I’d force a smile and reply in a half joking manner: homemade.
I couldn’t remember when I started to find her such an embarrassment. As a little boy, I relied on her so much. She had been working at home, cooking in the kitchen, knitting by the lamp or riding across town to buy me a book I badly needed. It had always been much fun riding with mom. But just now there seemed to be something standing between us, something that made her so strange to me and me to her.

7 . The mom had died when the rescuers found her after the terrible earthquake. She was covered by a destroyed house. Through gaps (缝隙) of those ruins, the rescuers could see her last posture (姿势).It was something like an ancient person who was kowtowing (叩头),but it just looked strange because she was out of shape by pressure.
The rescuers confirmed her death by touching her through the gaps of the ruins. They shouted at the ruins again and again, knocked the bricks using various tools, but no reply inside.
Then the rescuing team went to the next building. Suddenly the leader ran back, calling “Come here.” He came to the body, put his hands under the woman, feeling and touching, then shouted loudly and gladly,“There is someone,a baby, still living.”
Through some efforts, rescuers cleaned up the ruins which blocked her. Under her body lay her baby, who was covered by a small red quilt (棉被).He was about 3 or 4 months’old. Since well protected by his mother’s body,he was safe. He was in a deep sleep when the rescuer carried him out,and his lovely and peaceful face warmed everyone around him. The doctor, along with the rescuing team, took the baby out of the quilt to check if the baby was all right, and he found there was a mobile phone in the quilt. The doctor looked at the screen; a written message was already there:“My dear baby if you could live, don’t forget how much I love you.” As a doctor,he experienced much of this type of separation; but at this moment,he cried. The mobile phone was passed, and every person who saw this message shed (流出) tears.
