2 . Thein Shwe is sitting with one of his students, 14-year-old Nur Hakim, outside a small classroom built of wood. Thein Shwe has been working at this non-formal primary education centre since it was first set up five years ago. He says, “I love teaching. I was a personal tutor (家庭教师) before. When I learnt that this centre was looking for teachers, I applied.
Thein Shwe is very popular among his students. Even Nur Hakim, who at first was very shy, becomes more confident as his teacher smiles, nodding to encourage him. “I come from a poor family,” says Nur Hakim. “My father died when I was a baby.”
Nur Hakim’s father, who was a factory worker, was the main provider. Since his father’s death, his mother has had to support the family of six by herself. Nur Hakim was not attending school until the age of 12, when he got the chance to attend this non-formal primary education centre. “I love English and I love my teacher because he is always on time and teaches us well,” says the boy.
Nur Hakim says he hopes to join Grade 5 students next year in a nearby government school. Nur Hakim holds on to his dreams. “I want to be a doctor,” he says. “In my village, I see a lot of illnesses.”
Thein Shwe admits (承认) he finds it difficult to support his family working as a volunteer. But Thein Shwe talks more about the successes and difficulties he has faced keeping his students in class. He says over the four years, about 80%of the students continue on to the government school or vocational (职业的) training.
When Thein Shwe is asked about his main success as a teacher, he needs no time to think. “It’s being able to keep the poorest children in school,” he says.

Every culture has a specific way of eating. North Americans and Europeans use forks, knives and spoons. In Asia, chopsticks are the top choice.
You might think it’s easy to use chopsticks, but actually it’s not as simple as it first appears. I learned this lesson a couple of years ago.
I had applied for a job with a Chinese-Canadian company in Vancouver. My new boss invited me out to lunch to celebrate my new job. He said we were going to eat in a Chinese restaurant in Chinatown. I was nervous. I knew we would be using chopsticks, and while I had tried many times to master the technique (技巧). I had failed in every attempt. How would I be able to make a good impression? Would they laugh at me? Would I make a complete fool of myself?
I went home that evening and cooked some rice and chicken. I put the food on my plate, and I spent the next hour attempting to learn how to use chopsticks. Try as I might, I could not hold the food with my chopsticks. I didn’t get much sleep that evening. I tossed and turned (辗转反侧) in bed, worrying about the coming lunch.
The next day, I could hardly contain my anxiety and headed to the restaurant. We were seated at an excellent table. My boss wrote out the food order, speaking to the waiter in Mandarin. My heart was beating wildly, but then I noticed a strange thing. Instead of the customary chopsticks, each of us had knives, forks and spoons.
I was confused at first, but then, it hit me. My boss knew that I would have trouble with the chopsticks. He wanted to save me from embarrassment, so he had called ahead and arranged for us to be served with knives and forks. I couldn’t believe how thoughtful he was.

It was a cool early morning of the winter season. I was excited to start my morning walk. Every day I promise myself that I would start ‘walking exercise’ but it never happened. I saw, so many people were engaged in this amazing habit but I could never push myself. So that day I was determined to take the golden opportunity!
I got everything ready, my shoes, socks, hand glove, and jacket, etc from the previous night. I don’t know why I felt as if I am going to do some expedition! Oh yes! I was ready and started walking on the lonely road. The outside temperature seemed to be below 18 degrees. But I enjoyed the fresh air. Probably that day I was the only one who was walking on the road at that time. I think I was too early but anyhow I loved it!
After a few yards were covered, I felt delighted! Tall trees were on both the roadsides. It was so calm and quiet all around except randomly the little birds was singing sweetly in the trees. On one side of the road, a small pond was there. Since it was my first walking exercise, I thought to take a little rest just near the bank of the river and then continue. The sun was moving closer to the horizon scattering colors to the sky.
As the sky started glittering with beautiful yellow and red light like every day before the sunrise, I left that place and ended my journey furthermore. I comforted myself that the next day I would increase my exercise a little more. I turned and leisurely walked down towards my home.
From then on, I kept walking in the morning every day. And many things beautiful occurred. However, the one I’ll never forget is my friendship with a homeless dog, which finally became a member of my family.
