Kevin is a very nice young boy, but he doesn’t like to study. He prefers to play games (using his father’s laptop Recently, Kevin has been bored with those old games and wants a new game. So he asks his mother. “Can I have a Lego game for the laptop?”
His mother rejects his demand, for fear that the game will do harm to his studies. Kevin wants the Lego game very much. He asks his mother many times, but she always says, “No.” Finally, Kevin’s mother has an idea. “You have a math test at school soon. You must know all the multiplication tables (乘法表) from 1 to 12. If you can get 80% in your math test, I will buy. you the Lego game.”
Kevin is not happy but he wants the Lego game so he tries to study. He works very hard. Soon he knows many of the answers but the nine times table is very difficult. Kevin cannot remember the answers.
The day before the math test, Kevin is coming home from school on the bus. Today at school they had a practice test. Kevin still couldn’t remember the nine times table. I tried hard but I won’t get 80%, he thinks. My mother will not buy me the game.
He kicks the seat. The man sitting next to him on the bus looks at him. “Are you OK?” he asks. “Are you having trouble at school?”
Kevin’s mother always says “Do not talk to strangers!” But Kevin thinks this man has a kind face. He tells the man that his mother won’t buy a Lego game for him until he gets more than 80% on the math test.
“Well, that’s no problem,” says the man. “You can do it!”
“No, I can’t!” says Kevin. “I can remember 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12 times table answers. But I can’t remember 9 times!”
“Let me give you some clues!” the man says. “What is nine times one?”
“Nine! Everyone knows that!”
“And what is nine times two?”
“Eighteen!”
“Good! Eighteen is one and eight and one plus eight is nine.”

Michael, a 58-year-old man, lives in one of the most magical places in the world, Honolulu, Hawaii, which is known as an ideal vacation spot for most Americans. He gets to call this place home. But he has difficulty finding a regular place to live in. Being a homeless man, he usually sleeps on the streets and beaches of Honolulu.
Michael has an interest in baseball, so he often takes advantage of the wonderful weather to play baseball. That’s how he earns him the nickname “Baseball Michael”. Many of his friends know where to find him — in the former Heald College parking garage (停车场). There, he practices his skills, in the hope of making it big one day.
Several days ago, when Michael was hitting some baseballs, he lost one in a narrow gap between the parking garage and a drug store next door. He kept on playing. After losing a total of six balls, he decided to go down to get them. The gap was so narrow that he wasn’t sure whether he could squeeze in (挤进去). But realizing those baseballs were his only possessions, he finally made up his mind to have a try.
Michael made his way down the gap, but things turned tricky. He saw it was narrow at the bottom but he thought he was thin enough to enter it. Moments later, he let out an “uh oh”. Beyond his expectation, the space was too small for him to fit. However, he kept going with his eyes on his baseballs. He whispered, “Don’t give up. They are all I have.”
As Michael went down a little lower and lower, he realized that there was no way to return. He had to wait for somebody to rescue him. As he didn’t bring his mobile phone along, he had to shout as loudly as he could. However, there was no one answering him. Half an hour later, he felt extremely thirsty. He was very tired and afraid that he could no longer hold on. Just when he was about to give up, he heard the sound of footsteps was approaching.

Once upon a time, in a quiet countryside, there lived a humble farmer with a heart as vast as his fields. He had a litter of adorable puppies that he needed to find new homes for. One sunny morning, he decided to paint a sign advertising the puppies and set off to nail it to a post at the edge of his yard.
As he hammered in the last nail, he felt a small hand pulling at his clothes. Looking down, he saw the sincere eyes of a little boy looking up at him. The boy said. “Sir. I want to buy one of your puppies.”
The farmer, wiping the sweat from his face, replied, “Well, these puppies come from fine parents and costa good deal of money.” The boy’s head drooped (下垂) for a moment, but he reached into his pocket and pulled out a handful of change, holding it up to the farmer. “I’ve got 89 cents. Is that enough at least to take a look?”
The farmer’s heart warmed, and he smiled, saying, “Of course.” He then let out a whistle (口哨), calling, “Here, Dolly!” With that, a charming sight appeared as Dolly and her four adorable pups rushed out from the doghouse and down the slope. The little boy pressed his face against the fence, his eyes dancing with delight.
As the four puppies approached the fence, the boy noticed something moving inside the doghouse. Slowly, another little fur ball appeared, obviously smaller than the others, It wobbled (摇晃) down the slope, doing its best to catch up. The boy was very excited, and he pointed to the puppy, saying, “I want that one.”
The farmer, however, knelt down at the boy’s side and gently said, “Son, you won’t want that puppy. He will never be able to run and play with you like these other dogs would.”

Catherine was the coolest kid in her class. Whenever she went, she was in the spotlight, with a bunch of kids following her and doing everything she did.
Her deskmate, Landy, however, was not in the cool kids’ group. Being the tallest kid in her class, she was teased by her classmates, who were always chanting “Landy, Landy, long as spaghetti (意大利面 )”. Every time Landy heard those silly chants, she could feel her face burst into flames. God knew how she wished the ground to crack and swallow her!
Catherine didn’t really like it when the kids chanted “Landy, Landy, long as spaghetti”. But she never told them to stop either, and nor did she ever talk to her. She liked being popular.
One weekend, Catherine went over to her grandfather for Thanksgiving. Her grandfather lives on a farm at the opposite end of town, where he keeps chickens. While helping to feed the chickens, Catherine noticed a peculiar one. Curling in the corner, it looked smaller than the others and was almost half-bare!
“What’s the matter with it?” She asked her grandfather, with a puzzled frown on her face. Her grandfather told her how chickens could act. “They have a pecking (啄) order,” he explained, wrinkles of concern spreading around his forehead. “If one chicken is different, the others will push it away and keep pecking it. Sometimes they peck it so much that it dies.”
“Oh, what a poor little thing!” Catherine let out a sigh as she scooped the frightened chicken up in her arms, whose heart was beating fast in the bony little body. Suddenly, she thought of Landy, the girl being “pecked” by her classmates. “I’m going to take it home and take good care of it,” she said with a determined look.
Back in school, Catherine told the cool kids about the chicken. “It’s looking healthy,” she said proudly. “It’s fatter and its feathers are growing. Even the cat likes it. She carries it around the garden, and...” Everyone was entertained by Catherine’s story of her lovely chicken, laughter lingering around the classroom.

9 . As a child, Shade Ajayi worked in her aunt’s shop instead of attending school. She now runs her own business making and selling purses and bags. But she believes her inability to read or write is holding her back. Until recently, Ajayi had never gone to school. Now 50, the businesswoman is learning to read and write alongside students nearly 40 years younger than her.
Ajayi attends a school in Ilorin, in Nigera’s western Kwara state. She wears the same uniform, or school clothing, as hundreds of girls at the school. “I’m not ashamed (惭愧的) that I wear a uniform,” she said.

She sits in a class with students aged 11 to 13 and raises her hand to answer questions. Ajayi’s teacher, Nasrat Busari, said she did not appear worried about the age difference with other students. She has been coping well with them: playing together, talking together and discussing things together.
Ajayi’s daughter, Shola Adeboye, said at first, she was embarrassed that her mother attended school alongside children. But later, she supported her mother’s efforts. “She has always wanted to be educated but she couldn’t until now,” Adeboye said.
Ajayi still makes bags and purses after finishing classes. A helper serves her customers during school hours. She plans to continue her education for four more years, saying it will help her business. “People around me can read and write and they are succeeding in their businesses,” said Ajayi. Tina was a 13-year-old girl. She was playing in the yard one morning when she overheard her parents’ dialogue. Her father, a sheepherder who raised hundreds of sheep, was going to the nearest town to do some urgent things. He suggested that Tina should herd (放牧) the sheep while he was away. But her mother, a disabled woman, doubted whether Tina could do that.
Hearing this, Tina stepped into her parents’ room. “Mom, I can herd the sheep. I have grown up,” said Tina, full of expectation. Her parents smiled and agreed. After putting some bread and water into her bag as lunch, Tina drove the sheep out of sheepfold (羊圈), walking them south to a distant grassland. Her mother repeatedly told her that she didn’t have to herd the sheep until the sunset like her father did. But Tina had made up her mind to prove that she had grown up.
It was the first time that Tina had herded the sheep. That day seemed much longer than any other day before. The sun seemed to have stopped in the middle of the sky. The bread was eaten up soon and so was the water. So after some hesitation, Tina finally decided to drive the sheep back home while the sun was still high in the west.
Tina’s father was waiting outside the sheepfold, as if he had expected all that. He smiled at Tina but Tina just kept her head down. The sheep soon got into the sheepfold. Tina was about to shut the door when her father told her to count the sheep in case that some sheep were lost. Tina followed her father’s orders despite her unwillingness.
The sheep were not cooperative (配合的) at all. They were coming and going. Tina counted the sheep three times but each was a different number. She tried again and again and at last she told her father that she had lost three. Her father was not angry but said, “Three? Are you kidding?” Tina felt so guilty that she turned around immediately and went to look for the missing sheep and the pride as well.
