Fran Hawes is standing on the edge of a mountain of dry recycling. She says, “Some think it’s a discouraging thing, but for me personally, it is a huge responsibility.” Fran, who started to do the job at the age of 26, takes her job very seriously. “I am that annoying person at a party who will get everyone’s recycling and make sure everything goes in the right bin,” she admits. “That’s my job. That’s my mission. That’s what I need to do. It allows me to find my leadership style.”
Bin loader Richard Hughes and his colleagues clock on (打卡上班) at the waste service garage in Peter borough at 6:30 and are out emptying bins within half an hour. Richard works four 12-hour days and admits the pay and the condition are not great — but there are three days off which he can spare to his partner and children. His colleague Crystal Teal has been working as a bin loader for two and a half months. “I didn’t feel my last job gave me self-worth and general happiness, so I decided to change and do something completely different,” she says. “I decided to be a binman. It doesn’t bother me that men are mainly doing it,” Crystal adds. “It can be smelly some days, but go home and have a shower, you’ll be all right.”
Their biggest problem? When householders put the wrong material — like rotting food and nappies — in the recycling bins. “It makes me feel angry that they are just putting it out there. We’re doing our job to serve them. We are providing service to take their rubbish away and they can’t do their part to put the right things in,” said Richard. “Any problem has a solution — therefore I’m not afraid of a pile of waste,” Fran says. “To any normal person, this might be intimidating (吓人的). It’s a challenge. But this will be gone by Monday morning.”

3 . The Catnapper Mystery
Cody, the catnapper, had a talent for taking cats from trees, yards, and porches. He’d keep them until their owners paid for their return. One day, Milly’s kitten Mousie was missing. Milly accused Cody. “No way!” said Detective Denny. “I saw Cody catch a train to Planters Plain this morning. Mousie can’t have been kidnapped by Cody!”
“There are no paw prints on my lawn,” noted Milly. “Mousie didn’t just run off!”
“And there are no sneaker prints,” said Detective Denny. “Cody only wears sneakers.” Then he noticed tiny holes in the grass that looked like they were made by high-heeled shoes. Denny pulled out a pencil. He was very careful as he measured the holes. “Half a pencil deep! Only Patty Perry’s Pet Shop wears heels that high and thin.”
Milly and Detective Denny ran to Patty’s, where a man was loading pets into a van. “Where are these animals going?” asked Milly.
“To Carter’s Cats in Planters Plain,” he replied.
“Where is Patty Perry?” asked Detective Denny.
“She had to catch a train,” said the man.
“Hmmm,” thought Denny. “Cody’s full name is Cody Carter. Sounds like Carter’s Cats! And he’s on a train to Planters Plain.”
Denny figured Patty would sell the cats and then Cody would steal them back. Only this time, Patty made the snatch(抢夺). “They resell the cats in Planters Plain,” he realized, “and split the money!”
“Sounds illegal!” said the man with the van.
The Planters Plain police met the train and took the catnappers straight to prison. Best of all, the cats in captivity, including Milly’s Mousie, were returned to their owners.

4 . 75-year-old hip-hop (街舞) grandma Stephanie Walsh has gained worldwide attention with her intense dance moves and incredible energy. Better known as “Ms. Stephanie” online, Walsh has been featured on social media accounts with some videos drawing more than 11 million people to watch.
Walsh believes the videos gained popularity because she is 75. “It’s because I’m a senior,” said Walsh. “You don’t usually see someone my age doing hip-hop and moving like that. ”But actually, it’s more than that. Just as her profile claims, Walsh’s videos are “inspiring the world to dance like no one is watching. ”
“Dance isn’t just your body, it’s what you’re feeling inside about the dance and it’s what comes out here in your face,” Walsh said. “What I want to put through my movement is how much fun it is and how much joy it gives you.”
From a young age, Walsh loved to dance but her family didn’t have the money for classes. When she was nearly 30, she got her daughter ballet lessons, which her daughter hated. So, she took her daughter out and started classes herself right away.
Walsh believes her lifelong passion for dance is what motivates her today. “Everybody has to have a passion in their life,” she said. “It’s like that saying, ‘A life without passion is a life half lived.’ I believe that.”
Walsh dances for fun and fitness, but also for therapy (心理治疗). She struggled through countless hardships, and she has more than enough reasons to keep her down. But they don’t. She turns to her faith, her friends and of course, dance, to shine as an inspiration to those around her.
Gilbert, one of Walsh’s followers, says she inspires him every day. “She’s a beautiful soul who teaches me that it doesn’t matter about your age or your size. As long as you feel good, that’s all that matters,” says Gilbert. “I am truly thankful that Walsh is teaching me at the age of 32 to live my life full and stop being so scared.”

7 . Maybe you’ve heard about the saying, “A bird with a broken wing will never fly as high.” I’m sure that T. J. Ware was made to feel this way almost every day in school.
By high school, T. J. was the most famous troublemaker in his town. He got into lots of fights. He failed almost every exam but was passed on each year to a higher grade level. Teachers didn’t want to have him again the following year.
When I showed up to lead the first training for a leadership retreat, a program designed to have students become more involved in their communities, the community leaders told me about T. J. Ware, the boy with the longest arrest record in the history of town. Somehow, I knew that I wasn’t the first to hear about T. J.’ s darker side as the first words of introduction.
At the start of the retreat, T. J. didn’t readily join the discussion groups and didn’t seem to have much to say. But when his group started a discussion about positive and negative things that had happened at school that year, he joined in and had clear thoughts on those situations, and the other students in his group welcomed his comments. Suddenly, T. J. felt like a part of the group, and soon he was treated like a leader. He was saying things that made a lot of sense, and everyone was listening. By the end of the retreat, he had joined the Homeless Project team. He knew something about poverty, hunger and hopelessness. The other students on the team were impressed with his ideas and love for the homeless. They elected T. J. vice-chairman of the team.
Two weeks later, the Homeless Project team organized a communitywide service project — a giant food drive. Seventy students led by T. J. collected a school record: 2,854 cans of food in just two hours, enough to take care of poor families in the area for 75 days. The local newspaper covered the event with a full-page article the next day. T. J.’ s picture was up there for doing something great.
T. J. reminds us that a bird with a broken wing only needs mending. But once it has healed, it can fly higher than the rest.

Dillon later told his mother what he’d done. They went back to look for the book. It was gone. His mother called the library to ask if anyone had found it.
Alex Hartman runs the library where Dillon left his book. “It was a secret act,” Hartman said, laughing. He and the staff (职员) had found and read the book. Hartman read it to his 6-year-old son, Cruzen. Cruzen laughed and said it was one of the funniest books he’d ever seen.
The library staff agreed that Dillon’s book should be in the library. The story was good. It was fun to read. So Hartman asked the Helbigs if the library could put a bar code (条形码) on the book. That would allow others to check it out. The answer was a happy yes.
A local news channel reported on Dillon’s story. After that, more and more people wanted to read his book. By late last month, there was a list of 55 people waiting to check it out. Often, if a book has a long waiting list, the library buys a second copy. They can’t do that with Dillon’s book. But Hartman is talking to Dillon’s mom about making it into an e-book to share. The book even won a prize. The library gave Dillon its first Whoodini Award for Best Young Novelist.

How time flies! Before he saw the blooming flowers in the garden, everything had been covered in a deep snow. Looking at himself again, he had already become so old, his hair and beard totally white.
He was filled with regrets. I’d rather spend my life step by step than go in such a hurry. Better let me wait patiently! The button moved to the left with a rush. Once again, he was waiting for his lover under that big tree. His restlessness disappeared completely.
