Joe was an old man aged 75. He lived happily with a beautiful family. Then his children grew up and moved to different cities in pursuit of a good career and future. He was left living in a small village carrying the memories of his dead wife.
Joe had four grandchildren. They used to visit him during their holidays. It was now their vacation time and Joe was eagerly waiting for their arrival. He prepared his home for the kids, cleaning the house, mowing (修剪) the garden, and buying their favourite foods and dresses.
In the process of these busy arrangements, he lost his watch. The watch was gifted by his dead wife when their first child was born. Joe treasured the watch. After his wife’s death, it became his only companion with its “tick, tick” sound throughout the silent night.
He was happy with the kids at home and forgot about the missing watch. It was only the next day when he was about to take a bath that he remembered the watch was lost. He saw it last when he was arranging things in the barn (谷仓).
He was very upset. His grandchildren asked him why he was feeling so low and what was troubling him. Joe said, “Dear children, I lost the most precious watch I have ever had and ever got in my life. It was a gift from your grandma. I lost it while cleaning the house! I feel like I’m missing my heart.” The children tried to comfort him. One granddaughter asked, “Grandpa, do you remember when you saw the watch last before it went missing?” Joe said, “I guess when I was cleaning the barn!” The children rushed to the barn to search for the watch.
The barn was full of waste materials, books, broken furniture, etc. They searched for more than two hours with the help of Joe, but could not find it Joe was completely at a loss and asked the children to stop searching. All felt sad and left, disappointed.

Jenny was the only child in her home. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn’t help weeping sorrowfully when she thought of the scolding from her mother. Wandering aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat, but it was not possible for her, since she had nothing with her. She stood beside a stand for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she sighed and had to leave.
The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, “Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles?”
“Oh, yes. . . but I don’t have money on me…” she replied.
“That’s nothing. I’ll treat you today,” said the man. “Come in.”
The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently.
“What is it?” asked the man kindly.
“Nothing, actually I was just touched by your kindness!” said Jenny as she wiped her tears. “Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so merciless compared to a stranger!”

It was a cool early morning of the winter season. I was excited to start my morning walk. Every day I promise myself that I would start ‘walking exercise’ but it never happened. I saw, so many people were engaged in this amazing habit but I could never push myself. So that day I was determined to take the golden opportunity!
I got everything ready, my shoes, socks, hand glove, and jacket, etc from the previous night. I don’t know why I felt as if I am going to do some expedition! Oh yes! I was ready and started walking on the lonely road. The outside temperature seemed to be below 18 degrees. But I enjoyed the fresh air. Probably that day I was the only one who was walking on the road at that time. I think I was too early but anyhow I loved it!
After a few yards were covered, I felt delighted! Tall trees were on both the roadsides. It was so calm and quiet all around except randomly the little birds was singing sweetly in the trees. On one side of the road, a small pond was there. Since it was my first walking exercise, I thought to take a little rest just near the bank of the river and then continue. The sun was moving closer to the horizon scattering colors to the sky.
As the sky started glittering with beautiful yellow and red light like every day before the sunrise, I left that place and ended my journey furthermore. I comforted myself that the next day I would increase my exercise a little more. I turned and leisurely walked down towards my home.
From then on, I kept walking in the morning every day. And many things beautiful occurred. However, the one I’ll never forget is my friendship with a homeless dog, which finally became a member of my family.

For twelve years, my church has participated in the Appalachia Service Project. One week each summer, volunteers go to repair or build homes for families.
At the age of sixteen, I went on my first volunteer project in West Virginia. On the night we arrived, we discovered that “our family” was living in a trailer (活动房屋) that was in poor condition. The staff soon decided that the only reasonable solution was to build a new house. “Our family” was overjoyed with their new house that was 20x30 foot with three bedrooms, a bath and a kitchen/family room.
On Tuesday of that week, I asked “our family’s” three boys, Josh, Eric and Ryan, “What do you want for your new room?” Josh, the oldest, responded, “I just want a bed.”
We were stunned. The boys had never slept in a bed. They were used to foam pads (泡沫垫). That night we had a meeting and decided that beds would be the perfect gift. On Thursday night, we drove to the nearest city and bought beds and new bedding.
On Friday, when we saw the delivery truck coming, we told “our family” about the surprise. It was like watching excited children on Christmas morning. That afternoon, we set up the beds. As we fitted the frames together, Eric ran into the house to watch us. He observed with wide-eyed enthusiasm. As Meggan, a member of our group, slipped a pillowcase onto one of the pillows, Eric asked, “What is that?”
“A pillow,” she replied,
“What do you do with it?” Eric persisted.
“When you go to sleep, you put your head on it,” Meggan answered softly. Tears came to our eyes as she handed Eric the pillow.
“Oh... that’s soft,” he said, hugging it tightly.

6 . When I was six, Dad brought home a dog one day, who was called “Brownie”. My brothers and I all loved Brownie and did different things with her. One of us would walk her, another would feed her, then there were baths, playing catch and many other games. Brownie, in return, loved each and every one of us. One thing that most touched my heart was that she would go to whoever was sick and just be with them. We always felt better when she was around.
One day, as I was getting her food, she chewed up (咬破) one of Dad’s shoes, which had to be thrown away in the end. I knew Dad would be mad and I had to let her know what she did was wrong. When I looked at her and said, “Bad girl,” she looked down at the ground and then went and hid. I saw a tear in her eyes.
Brownie turned out to be more than just our family pet. She went everywhere with us. People would stop and ask if they could pat her. Of course she’d let anyone pat (拍) her. She was just the most lovable dog. There were many times when we’d be out walking and a small child would come over and pull on her hair. She never barked (吠) or tried to get away. Funny thing is that she would smile. This frightened people because they thought she was showing her teeth. Far from the truth, she loved everyone.
Now many years have passed since Brownie died of old age. I still miss days when she was with us.

I was moving as fast as 1 could, stepping cautiously from rock to rock along the uneven dock (码头). Far ahead, I could see the back of my brother’s hair and the bright orange of his shorts.
“Too slow, sis!” I heard Sam yell as he jumped with ease.
I’ll show him, I thought, and attempted a double jump. What a mistake! My left foot came down hard between the edges of two gray rocks, scraping my ankle. “Ouch!” I yelled. I tried to pull my foot out, but my shoe was stuck. I bent closer to the rock, and that’s when I saw it: a shiny, square shaped stone with the color of water, attached to a glittery gold chain. It was just lying there on the wet sand and a few seconds later it was in my pocket.
“Why do you look weird?” my brother asked once I’d freed my foot and caught up to him. “I don’t look weird,” I said. Could he tell I was hiding the most perfect discovery of the summer? I kept turning the treasure around in my pocket, pushing each corner of the square stone into my finger. I was excited, but I didn’t want Sam to notice. He liked to tell everybody my collections — the paper napkins stamped with my initials “R.A.”, the mini cola bottle perfect for sand art, and the salt and pepper shakers from yard sale. Due to the strange habit I have, my family calls me their “little collector”, and some mean kids at school call me “trash girl”.
Sam and I walked along the main street, the small buildings giving us a break from the sun. Going by a candy shop, I saw a sign on the window’s glass reading LOST: Gold and blue necklace. Very special. If found, call Chrissy at 555-9924. Chrissy had drawn a crayon version of the necklace at the bottom of the poster. The necklace looked different from the one I clutched (抓紧) in my pocket, I decided. We continued to walk, and I noticed four more posters. Someone must have returned that necklace by now, I thought.
