1 . I felt anxious when going into my room from school. Every day, my room was something different. The hours away at school were long enough to cause a terrible change to my peaceful harbor. Today was no exception.
As I entered the house, Mom greeted me with a smile. It seemed like nothing was wrong. But I was still doubtful about it. Yesterday, around the mouth of my favorite figurine (小雕像) was a chocolate cookie. Obviously, Callie had enjoyed the cookie so much that she wanted to share it with my angel.
I looked around for Callie, who had just turned three. I didn’t see her, but I heard the TV blaring (发出声音) in the other room. As I examined the family room, I noticed it was pretty messy. There were toys all over the floor, but none of them seemed to be mine. Maybe she hadn't entered today. I was so hopeful that I breathed a sigh of relief.
I pushed my room door open and saw damage! There were a few headless dolls, some broken blocks, and a few juice-stained stuffed animals. “She did it again!” I screamed in anger. My mother ran up to me, embarrassed. She promised to put a Callie-proof lock on my door tonight. I felt better, because I knew that soon my room would truly belong to me. However, I was still angry with my little sister so I went into the family room to tell her how she had made life unpleasant for me. “Callie... ” I started. “Hooray!” she shouted.
She leaped off the sofa and hugged my knees with such happiness that I could only look down at her and smile. After all, she was only three and learning about the world in her own way. And she always chose to explore and destroy my room because she loved me, her big sister.

Walking out of the hair salon, Sally was happy like a bird. Her new hairstyle was satisfactory. She decided to walk down the busy street to the car park. Just then the first distant crash of thunder shook the air. Sally looked up at the sky. “Oh no!” she thought. “It’s going to rain, but I don’t have an umbrella!”
All of a sudden, with more thunder and lightning, large rain drops began to fall. Sally started to run. She was wearing high heels (高跟鞋), so she could not run very fast. She decided to go into a shop and wait for the rain to stop. Then she ran into the entrance to a book shop and waited. She anxiously looked at her watch. “Oh no! It’s 3:30! I have a very important meeting at 4:00! What am I going to do? I can’t wait here!” she thought uneasily.
She tried to look for a taxi, but there were no taxies. She hoped to take a bus, but there were no buses, either. She impatiently observed the sky from time to time, which was becoming even cloudier and darker.
Considering for a while, Sally decided to run to the car park. She stepped out of the bookstore entrance and rushed into the rain. Only several seconds later, Sally’s shoes, skirt, coat and newly styled hair were all wet. Just at that moment, she heard a voice behind her, “Excuse me! Excuse me!” It was a strong tall man. Sally felt a bit frightened. She began to run faster than before.
“Stop! Please wait!”
Sally pretended not to hear and kept running, even faster. But the man was very close to her now.
“Please! Stop! Stop!”
Sally was too tired to run any more. She had to stop and turned back. “Who are you? What do you want?” she shouted with an angry and scared voice. The man, who was wearing a suit and carrying a suitcase, looked like a businessman of around 40 years old. He did not say anything, but passed Sally his umbrella, then ran away quickly.

“I look like a clown (小丑)!” Winston thought sadly. He pulled his cap down, thankful for the cover it provided. He wanted to escape the attention of the people outside the barbershop (理发店). He looked around before hurrying away into the darkness to put some distance between himself and the curious eyes of others.
As he moved quickly down the street,Winston wondered why he hadn’t spoken up to prevent the terrible haircut. He felt sad and questioned why this had happened to him. Did the barber give him this messed-up haircut on purpose? Winston didn’t believe it because the barber looked very friendly. But it seemed so crazy! Could he have unknowingly offended the barber, and this disastrous hairstyle was the barber’s way of getting back at him?
Winston was also worried that Jack would laugh at him. Jack was his cousin and liked playing jokes. But maybe he wouldn’t; he was understanding too. Winston kept thinking about it.Upon entering his new home, ,Winston’s mom greeted him from the kitchen. She called out to him, asking to see his new hairstyle. Winston walked into the kitchen, his cap still on, and slowly took it off.
His mother looked very surprised. She couldn’t help but burst into laughter. “Oh déar,” she shouted. “What happened?” Winston stood silently for a moment before letting out his anger. He blamed his mom for bringing him to this place, torcing him to attend a new school where he believed everyone would make fun of him. He also said he hated this terrible hairstyle, and his hair was beyond fixing.
Just as his anger was about to grow, the doorbell-rang. Winston’s mom calmly told him to answer it. As he opened the door, he forgot to cover his terrible haircut, and there stood his cousin Jack. Since it was Saturday today, they had planned to go skating together. Winston felt extremely embarrassed.

6 . Graduating at 90, as I did this year with a Master of Arts (MA) from the University of Buckingham in inteligence history, might invoke (授用) the expression “late starter”. My higher education formally began when I was in my 60s.
I’ve had no material gain as a result. Due to my Bachelor of Arts (BA) in psychology, there followed a volunteer job as a drugs counsellor. There were significant disadvantages to acquiring my two undergraduate degrees — six years of constant hard work involving the addiction to the course for most of the year is to affect domestic relationships. It did, but we survived.
However, I think the spiritual and intellectual benefits far outweighed the disadvantages. Indeed, I was not really looking forward to attending my first seminar (研讨班). I was worried about what to expect, but I needn’t have been — my fellow students immediately put me at ease. Two nice young ladies moved apart and offered me a chair between them. It was a relief. Friendship between students is well known, and it was very much in evidence here. I made many friends among them, and they seemed to treat me no differently from any other students, except for one big Kenyan boy who insisted on calling me “sir”.
I am not aware of any deep reason for undertaking the MA. Probably a continuing wish to learn exists, and a chance to put at into practice presented itself when my wife showed me an invitation from the University of Buckingham to apply for a master’s course on the history of intelligence with Bletchley Park Studies. She said it seemed right up my street, and that as we had recently discussed the need for a new direction — why not take it? The related background was that my last job was at Hanslope Park (I am a qualified electronics engineer), an organization that took over from Bletchley Park. These circumstances arouse my curiosity again. I applied and was accepted.
So, would I recommend a return to formal learning post retirement? Surely, yes.

10 . Growing up, I always wanted to be an outgoing person because I thought that was the way I should be. I was always stuck on the idea that bigger personalities could achieve more. So I connected outgoingness with success.
However, I started letting go of the idea that outgoingness would help me achieve more when my skills as a leader were put to the test.
When I was 16, I volunteered at a summer camp for a week, where I led 12 fifth graders. Although I tried to solve problems as they came up, it seemed there was always another problem following.
Every night, I was supposed to read bedtime stories, but as my campers were getting ready for bed on Thursday, things reached a boiling point when one camper accused (指责) another of ruining camp for her. After I called in a teacher, our small wooden house was finally silent, but the hidden anger made me realize that my campers’ experience would become less enjoyable if I left things unsolved.
Instead of reading stories that night, I decided to share a good memory I had of each of my campers. Afterwards, I invited my campers to describe their own memories, and watching the atmosphere (气氛) in our house changing as they described the good moments in the week gave me the feeling that finding my own ways to be a leader could be good enough.
The experience made me realize that I should grow in my own direction rather than forcing myself into a type that never really fit.
