文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文,讲述了作者一家人在新年那一天去帮助朋友收拾被龙卷风破坏的家的故事。

1 . This morning my family and I went to a friend’s home to help her get things back in order. She was one of the unfortunate people whose home was recently destroyed by a tornado (龙卷风). One side of her home fell off and the roof was gone over a large part of the house. Torrential rain fell the rest of the night and all of the next day following the tornado, creating even more damage to her belongings. The home was a total loss. Still, there was much that was valuable, and our job today was to help her sort through the debris and find anything with actual value that she may want to take with her.

My husband helped to move furniture and other things to the storeroom while our two younger children helped clean up the yard. My oldest daughter and her boyfriend helped as well, and my another daughter with me swept up all of the areas of debris, sorting it for things that were important. We worked systematically, clearing the main living space first, then moving on to the kitchen, the laundry area, then the master bedroom.

By the time we were done today, though there was no denying the home had met with disaster, we had gone far to restore order from the loss that had been there before.

My thought in entering the day was that our friend, who had been having trouble sleeping, was being affected by that loss negatively. I hoped that if we could restore order, she would finally start to feel some sense of peace and her mind would quiet and allow her the much-needed rest she so deserved.

She posted on Facebook just a little while ago that for the first time she was sleeping at night these days. For me, what a wonderful and deeply meaningful way to begin the New Year!

4. What’s the best title for the text?
A.A Way to Help FriendsB.The Love From Friends
C.The Loss After the TornadoD.A Way to Welcome the New Year

2 . Fifteen years ago, when darkness used to fall in Yobe Nkosi, a remote village in northern Malawi, children did their school homework by candlelight: There was no electricity. But that started to change in 2006, when villager Colrerd Nkosi finished secondary school in Mzimba some 40 kilometers away, and returned home, and found he could no longer live without power.

Aged 23 at the time, Nkosi soon figured out that a small river past the house where he grew up had just enough force to push the pedals on his bicycle. He created a generator (发电机) that brought power into his home. Word spread quickly among brick houses and neighbors began paying regular visits to charge their mobile phones. “I started getting requests for electricity and decided to upgrade,” said Nkosi.

With no previous training, he turned an old fridge compressor (压缩机) into a water-powered turbine and put it in a nearby river, generating electricity for six households. Today, the village is supplied by a bigger turbine.

The users pay no fee for the power but give Nkosi some money for maintenance — slightly more than $1 per household per month. “The electricity is basically free,” Nkosi said, speaking in local Chichewa. He admitted that the maintenance income was too small to cover repair costs, which he mainly funded from his own pocket.

Despite the challenges, he was determined to expand his mini electricity network to surrounding areas. “Once more villages and schools have electricity, people will no longer cut down trees for charcoal (木炭),” he said. “Students will have a lot more time to study.”

As dusk settled over Kasangazi Primary School, groups of learners rushed into a classroom for a night-time study session. “Before we had electricity here, we used to use candles to study,” said student Gift Mfune, sorting through a pile of textbooks on his desk. “Now, we all have no excuse but to pass our examinations,” he laughed. Courtesy of Nkosi, the building is the only school with power out of 17 others servicing the area.

1. Why did Nkosi upgrade his first generator?
A.To make much more money.B.To meet people’s need for power.
C.To match new mobile phones.D.To attract more people to his home.
2. Which words can best describe Nkosi?
A.Open-minded and tolerant.B.Creative and generous.
C.Easy-going and courageous.D.Intelligent and cooperative.
3. What can we infer about the students in Kasangazi Primary School?
A.They have to stay up late.B.They do well in exams.
C.They are very grateful to Nkosi.D.They must have a promising future.
4. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A.To advertise a remote village.B.To share an encouraging story.
C.To show students’ love for a teacher.D.To put forward a practicable project.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了作者与室友生活习惯迥异,冲突在所难免,但是在室友遭遇悲痛之时,作者以实际行动表达自己的同情,从而达成和好。

3 . I was never very neat, while my roommate Kate was extremely organized. Each of her objects had its place, but mine always hid somewhere. She even labelled (贴标签) everything. I always looked for everything. Over time, Kate got neater and I got messier. She would push my dirty clothing over, and I would lay my books on her tidy desk. We both got tired of each other.

The war broke out one evening. Kate came into the room. Soon, I heard her screaming, “Take your shoes away! Why under my bed!” Deafened, I saw my shoes flying at me. I jumped to my feet and started yelling. She yelled back louder.

The room was filled with anger. We could not have stayed together for a single minute but for a phone call. Kate answered it.

From her end of the conversation, I could tell right away her grandma was seriously ill. When she hung up, she quickly crawled (爬) under her covers, sobbing.

Obviously, that was something she should not go through alone. All of a sudden, a warm feeling of sympathy rose up in my heart.

Slowly, I collected the pencils, took back the books, made my bed, cleaned the socks and swept the floor, even on her side. I was so buried in my work that I even didn’t noticed Kate had sat up.

She was watching, her tears dried and her expression showed her disbelief. Then, she reached out her hands to grasp mine. I looked up into her eyes. She smiled at me, “Thanks.”

A Mother’s Day Surprise

The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.

The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.

Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

After they fought a horrible fire for 12 hours, Tim and Paul stepped into the 130Diner for breakfast. When the time came to pay the bill though, they were in for a surprise.

6 . For many years, Croatian-American recording artist Nenad Bach toured the world performing with famous musicians like Bono and Pavarotti. Everything came to a stop in 2010, however, when Nenad was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease — a progressive disease that affects a person’s movement.

“I love music,” he said. “When I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2010, I didn’t know what it was. Five years later, I couldn’t even play the guitar.”

One day, a friend of Nenad’s asked him to play ping-pong with him, and Nenad said yes. The effects were immediate and positive: he woke up the next day filled with a “desire to live”, and his physical and mental issues had improved. Encouraged, he kept playing.

For months he told everyone around him about how ping-pong was helping his Parkinson’s, but his praise fell on deaf ears. Finally, he took matters into his own hands and started hosting Ping Pong Parkinson’s events at the Westchester Table Tennis Center in Pleasantville, New York. Once the events attracted enough attention, he started an organization called Ping Pong Parkinson (PPP) in March 2017.

PPP hopes to encourage people living with Parkinson’s to play ping-pong for its benefits. In addition to promoting social connectivity, PPP also says that it increases neuroplasticity (神经可塑性) which creates new neural pathways in the brain. Nenad has seen evidence of this with his own eyes many times in the past years. He said that their “facial expression changes from when they arrive until they leave. In addition, some people start walking again.”

Nenad has made spreading the word about the power of ping-pong his new life’s work! He hopes others will take up the sport and see the same improvements he’s enjoyed since the first time he picked up a paddle (乒乓球拍).

1. What happened to Nenad in 2015?
A.His disease got worse.B.He learned to perform.
C.He began to play the guitar.D.His acting journey ended.
2. What caused Nenad to have hopes for life again?
A.Organizing social events.B.Taking his mind off his work.
C.Setting up Ping Pong Parkinson.D.Playing ping-pong with his friend.
3. What was people’s attitude to Nenad’s words about ping-pong at first?
A.Uncertain.B.Favorable.C.Uninterested.D.Curious.
4. What’s the best title for the passage?
A.Nenad’s fighting against Parkinson
B.The benefits of playing ping-pong
C.The severity of Parkinson’s disease
D.The sporting experience of Nenad

7 . Aron Ralston was a pretty normal guy, but he always had an extremely adventurous desire to travel and see the world. During his childhood, his family moved to Denver, Colorado, a place offering many opportunities to climb mountains, explore, and eventually become the adventurer he’d always wanted to be. Back in 2003, Ralston was climbing in the remote, mountainous area of Southwestern Utah, when the unthinkable happened: Aron got stuck in a crevice (裂缝) in the rocks and pinned by a big stone that weighed over 360 kilograms. The weight of the rock crushed his arm, and he was pinned by it. Aron took photos of his bad situation (which was going to get a lot worse), hoping rescue teams (救援队) would know where he was and came to remove the rock so that he could get out and home safe.

But rescuers never came. Aron waited for them for days till he lost his hope. He knew he had to do something. He was 18 meters above the floor of the valley where he was pinned in, and he had a pocketknife. He made what must have been one of the most difficult decisions of his life: to cut his own arm in order to survive. Aron cut the lower part of his arm off, having to wrench (扭动) his forearm against the big stone to break the bones, and then got himself down to the bottom of the valley, where he would begin to walk and search for help. Luckily, help arrived in the form of a helicopter (直升机) that spotted him, covered in blood. Aron had tied off the wound to keep himself from bleeding to death pretty successfully and would eventually make it out alive.

Ralston went on to become an inspiring speaker and continued to travel and climb mountains—he didn’t let an incident that forced him to cut his own arm off, stop him from doing what he really loved.

A.He waited for the rescue to come.
B.He cut the stone using his pocketknife.
C.He moved off the stone using all his might.
D.He cut his lower part of his arm and broke the bones.
4. What helped Aron Ralston survive?

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了作者一家在芒果街上的生活经历和他们对房子的期望与现实之间的落差。

8 . We didn’t always live on Mango Street. Before that we lived on Loomis on the third floor, and before that we lived on Keeler. Before Keeler it was Paulina, and before that I can’t remember. But what I remember most is moving a lot. Each time it seemed there’d be one more of us. By the time we got to Mango Street we were six—Mama, Papa, Carlos, Kiki, my sister Nenny and me.

The house on Mango Street is ours, and we don’t have to pay rent to anybody, or share the yard with the people downstairs, or be careful not to make too much noise, and there isn’t a landlord striking the ceiling with a broom. But even so, it’s not the house we’d thought we’d get.

We had to leave the flat on Loomis quick. The water pipes broke and the landlord wouldn’t fix them because the house was too old. We had to leave fast. We were using the washroom next door and carrying water over in empty milk gallons. That’s why Mama and Papa looked for a house, and that’s why we moved into the house on Mango Street, far away, on the other side of town.

They always told us that one day we would move into a house, a real house that would be ours for always so we wouldn’t have to move each year. And our house would have running water and pipes that worked. And inside it would have real stairs, not hallway stairs, but stairs inside like the houses on TV. And we’d have a basement and at least three washrooms so when we took a bath we wouldn’t have to tell everybody. Our house would be white with trees around it, a great big yard and grass growing without a fence. This was the house Papa talked about when he held a lottery ticket and this was the house Mama dreamed up in the stories she told us before we went to bed.

But the house on Mango Street is not the way they told it at all. It’s small and red with tight steps in front and windows so small you’d think they were holding their breath. Bricks are crumbling (坍塌、崩裂) in places, and the front door is so swollen (肿胀) you have to push hard to get in. There is no front yard, only four little elms (榆树) the city planted by the curb. Our back is a small garage for the car we don’t own yet and a small yard that looks smaller between the two buildings on either side. There are stairs in our house, but they’re ordinary hallway stairs, and the house has only one washroom. Everybody has to share a bedroom—Mama and Papa, Carlos and Kiki, me and Nenny.

Once when we were living on Loomis, a nun (修女) from my school passed by and saw me playing out front. The laundromat (投币自助洗衣店) downstairs had been boarded up (封住) because it had been robbed two days before and the owner had painted on the wood YES WE’RE OPEN so as not to lose business.

“Where do you live?” She asked.

“There,” I said pointing up to the third floor.

“You live there?” There. I had to look to where she pointed—the third floor, the paint peeling, wooden bars Papa had nailed on the windows so we wouldn’t fall out. “You live there?” The way she said it made me feel like nothing. “There. I lived there.” I nodded.

I knew then I had to have a house. A real house. One I could point to. But this isn’t it. The house on Mango Street isn’t it. For the time being, Mama says. Temporary, says Papa. But I know how those things go.

1. The size of the family ______ each time they moved house.
A.rose and fellB.slimmed downC.mounted upD.stayed the same
2. Which of the following does NOT fit the description of the family’s dream house?
A.Spaciousness.B.Convenience.C.Comfort.D.Quietness.
3. The narrator’s dream house and the house on Mango Street are compared in the following details EXCEPT ______.
A.sizeB.garageC.yardD.stairs
4. What can we infer from the passage?
A.I believed that we were less likely to leave Mango Street for a new house any time soon.
B.The conversation I had with the nun raised my self-esteem.
C.The laundromat’s owner set up a notice board by design for promotion.
D.We had to leave the flat on Loomis because we were suffering from a leaking pipe in the washroom next door.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文,作者通过自己的成长故事和生活经历说明家里有黑板的重要性。

10 . I grew up in a house with an unusual design feature. The floor of part of the house was made of pieces of chalkboards that my father gathered from the local high school when it was repaired. He added a second large piece on the wall, too.

The result was that we always had a place to write notes, draw pictures, do quick calculations, and keep an ongoing grocery list to which anyone could contribute. The wall chalkboard was used for important notes, while the floor was most handy for messages that were meant to catch someone’s eye the moment they came in the house, things like “I’ve run out to the store, back in 30 minutes” or “Please start dinner at 5:30”.

When I was young, I thought that every house would have a large writing area, but then I moved away and realized that wasn’t the case. For years, especially since having kids, I’ve tried to keep information organized. Though my Moleskine paper planner has given some semblance (表象) of order to my life, it doesn’t make up for a good chalkboard.

But now things have changed. I’m pleased to say that a proper chalkboard has finally been fixed in my kitchen—something that should have happened years ago! My dad recently came for a visit and brought a piece of slate (石板) that fits the wall behind the door, adding a board for chalk.

All of a sudden we have an obvious place to go to store information where all family members can see it, a place where important thoughts can be written down.

I think every house should have a proper-sized chalkboard — a real slate one, if you can find it. It’s a game-changer, a family unifier, and an effective organizer. I may not have a chalkboard floor, but once again I have a chalkboard wall, and now my home feels complete.

1. What developed the author’s love for houses with a chalkboard?
A.His father’s expectation of him.B.Usual visits to an old house.
C.The environment he grew up in.D.His habit of writing something.
2. What happened to the author after he had children?
A.He was too busy to relax.
B.He developed an interest in chalkboards.
C.He grew poorer at collecting information.
D.He had trouble organizing information at home.
3. What can we know about the author’s father?
A.He bought slate from a school for the author.
B.He lived together with the author all the time.
C.He got a chalkboard fixed at the author’s home.
D.He had a chalkboard wall built in his own kitchen.
4. What is the benefit of having a chalkboard at home according to the author?
A.Making one healthier and wealthier.
B.Helping to keep the family life in order.
C.Increasing one’s sense of belonging.
D.Developing children’s interest in learning.
