文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。作者想通过走“捷径”速成西班牙语,结果却弄巧成拙,让自己陷入尴尬状态。

1 . I met Luis, an exchange student from Mexico, and soon we became friends. Language was no barrier as he could speak English. If his three sisters, who spoke little English, hadn’t visited us, we might have been the best friends.

At that time, I got along well with him and determined to pay a visit to his home and make a good impression on his family. The only problem was that I was too busy with my classes to take a Spanish class. Instead, I decided to take the Spanish-English cognate (同根词) shortcut. I thought to myself, “They are interrelated, and Spanish is not so difficult.” I discovered I could add a vowel(元音)to the end of many English words. Instantly, it became Spanish. Thus “active” was “activo”; “habit” was “habito”; “abrupt” was “abrupto”.

On a Saturday night, I was invited to dinner at Luis’s apartment when his sisters arrived. I thought the dinner went well since the three girls kept giving me friendly smiles. However, we kept silent, and no one seemed to break the ice. Then Luis excused himself from the table.

With three pairs of eyes focused on me, I was forced to speak. Since I didn’t know much about Spanish, I had to be careful to say anything. I chose to play it safe by simply praising the fine meal they’d made. “Me gusta el dinero,” I said, smiling at each girl in return. They unhappily stared at me as Luis re-entered the room. Confusedly, he asked, “What did you do?” I just praised your sisters for this delicious dinner,” I replied weakly, suddenly questioning my limited Spanish vocabulary. Finally, the three girls told me that “gusta el dinero” means “like money”.

That night really left me in an awkward state. I couldn’t say that ended my friendship with Luis, but things were never quite the same between us after the fateful night. I learned a valuable lesson—it was always the shortcuts that got me into trouble.

1. What does the author think of Spanish and English?
A.They are equally difficult.B.Their spellings are the same.
C.There is a link between them.D.They have nothing in common.
2. What does the underlined phrase “play it safe” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Have fun.B.Avoid running a risk.
C.Play a trick.D.Turn to somebody for help.
3. Which word best describes the author’s Saturday night?
A.Embarrassing.B.Dangerous.C.Harmonious.D.Pleasant.
4. What can be the best title for the text?
A.A Decision On FateB.A Common Mistake

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。主要讲述了自从作者跟随爸妈搬到了南加州,每年都收到奶奶邮寄的装满了珍宝的爱心包裹。这成为作者假期中最美好的部分。

2 . It was New Year time, but I wasn’t looking forward to it. That winter, my mother and my stepfather moved our family to Southern California. My brother and I were leaving our rural Alabama behind. This would be our first New Year away from Alabama. My mother took to California like a swan to a royal lake. My athletic little brother, Paul, was excited at a climate that allowed him to go to the beach whenever he wanted.

I, however, was a fat child with a heavy southern pronunciation. My first day in the new class, I introduced myself in a low voice. All I said was my name and where I was from. The class burst into laughter. “He talks funnily.” I was so helpless that I went to a place to call Granny Smith after school, who was my biggest support. But I didn’t get through.

On Sunday evening, the phone rang. It was Granny. She often took advantage of the discounted long-distance rates on Sundays. She said she’d shipped a New Year package. Sure enough, it arrived. Surprised at the box, large enough to hold a small refrigerator, we eagerly tore it open. The smell of Granny’s house filled the room: a combination of fried meat, sausages, furniture polish and decorations. Her house was tiny and always filled with tacky holiday decorations and homemade food before New Year. But in my childhood eyes, it was precious and fantastic.

There were countless tins and containers. We opened them to discover piles of holiday treats. She even included our traditional candy bars. The box was as bottomless as a magical box. There, beneath all these, was my familiar holiday.

Every New Year that we spent in California, the postal service would call and say our package arrived. Over the years, many treasures arrived in the box. For me, it’s always been the best part of the holiday.

3 . In the fall of 2009, as the theater reporter for The Times, I called Angela Lansbury to confirm a sensitive piece of information. I was writing a story revealing the kinds of special assistance that some actors used to remember their lines.

I had heard that Ms. Lansbury, who was then 84, had used an earpiece earlier that year while playing on Broadway. I remember being nervous as I dialed her number. Nervous about whether I could persuade her to open up to me. Most nervous about interviewing a star who meant something to me and my father. However, Angela Lansbury, filling me with great admiration, was game to talk, quick with a laugh, frank and honest. I’d assumed that aging and memory were vulnerabilities (弱点); she saw them as facts and addressed them confidently.

Of using an earpiece on Broadway, she told me: “If we’re going to play important roles at our age, we’re going to ask for some support if we need it.”

Ms. Lansbury brought a combination of dignity and frankness to her life and work. She may have lacked the classic good looks and voice of her era, as she openly acknowledged, but being who she was, she found stardom and a large number of fans through raw talent and risk-taking.

By the time I interviewed Ms. Lansbury, my father was in his 70s and showing signs of dementia (痴呆). I was overly sensitive to the facts of aging and tended to see it as a vulnerability better kept private, as my father did. After interviewing her, I mentioned her earpiece story to my father as I persuaded him to wear the hearing aids that he had refused several times. When it came to persuading him to accept a caregiver — a measure of special assistance, no doubt— star-powered inspiration did also help me win the argument, which gave me an even deeper appreciation for Ms. Lansbury.

1. Why did the author call Ms. Lansbury?
A.To interview her for an article.
B.To invite her to perform on Broadway.
C.To learn from her how to remember lines.
D.To inform her of new kinds of special assistance.
2. How did Ms. Lansbury impress the author over the phone?
A.She was rather nervous.
B.She talked freely and openly.
C.She took her vulnerabilities seriously.
D.She had a good memory despite her age.
3. What does the author think makes Ms. Lansbury a star?
A.Her unique voice.
B.Her classic good looks.
C.Her attractive personality.
D.Her abilities to balance life and work.
4. What is the author’s purpose in writing the last paragraph?
A.To prove Ms. Lansbury’s opinion on aging.
B.To show Ms. Lansbury’s impact on him and his father.
C.To explain the relationship between him and his father.
D.To call on more people to show respect for Ms. Lansbury.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。本文主要介绍了作者的邻居泰勒夫人,及泰勒夫人对作者一家的包容与帮助,这让作者很怀念。

4 . Getting out of my car one evening in late January, I met my neighbor Theresa, who had seen me drive in. “Mrs Taylor is in the hospital again,” she said. “I thought you’d like to know.” I had last seen Mrs Taylor a day or two before Christmas when I took her a little loaf of pumpkin bread, and she came from the backroom in her wheelchair to talk with me. Mrs Taylor and I had been neighbors for 17 years. I remember the dog she and her husband used to have. They called him Beau. He greeted everyone who walked by, and Mr Taylor loved him.

Most of my conversations with Mrs Taylor had been incidental — visits by the mailbox, running into one another at the gas station where she helped me put air in my tire, quiet talks at the funeral home where we went to honor the memory of a mutual (相互的) friend.

When my husband and I moved here with our four noisy, laughing kids, it must have seemed as if the peaceful quiet of the neighborhood had been forever broken. But we showed our enthusiasm to the neighbors sincerely although we had little in common with the mostly elderly folks on our street. Over the years they helped us love our children, picking them up when a bicycle overturned and sending the kids cards for their graduation. We have enjoyed the comfort of living beside people who help us if our tree falls on the fence and feed the cat when we’re away.

Mrs Taylor did not survive her latest set-back. Once again I walked into the funeral home to say good-bye to a neighbor. I remembered the barking dog, the chats by the mailbox, the friendly wave across the fence. I remembered, and I was sad, but I had no regrets. Now there is a new family moving into the Taylor place. I see children’s toys in the yard. It’s time to take a walk.

1. What can we know according to the first paragraph?
A.Mrs Taylor has a big and happy family.
B.The author likes Mrs Taylor’s dog very much.
C.The author would like to know Mrs Taylor is in the hospital.
D.Mrs Taylor had been in poor health before Theresa told the author.
2. What does the underlined word “incidental” refer to?
A.Helpful.B.Unprepared.C.Unpleasant.D.Delightful.
3. How did the author solve the difference with the neighbors?
A.She let her children be less noisy and naughty.
B.She tried to know more elderly folks in her street.
C.She treated everyone in the neighborhood warmly.
D.She enjoyed the comfort of living beside neighbors.
4. What is the best title for the text?
A.The True NeighborB.Gratitude to my neighbor
C.Mrs Taylor — A Respectable WomanD.Expectation for New Neighbor

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了父亲说过的“通往广场的路不止一条”的话一直在指引着作者,帮助作者度过一次次难关。

5 . We were standing at the top of a church tower. I saw twisting streets leading to the square. “See, my dear,” Father said gently. “There is more than one way to the square.”

Father’s words always guided me. Dreaming of becoming a fashion designer, I came to Paris, but without luck. Then one day I met a friend wearing a beautiful sweater. “What an interesting stitch!” I cried. “It was done by Mrs. Vidian,” my friend explained. “She learned the stitch in Armenia, her native country.” Suddenly I had a daring idea. Why not design, make and sell my own clothes?

I drew a butterfly pattern and asked Mrs. Vidian to knit it into a sweater. It proved a success. A New York store wanted 40 sweaters to be ready in two weeks. I accepted the order. My happiness disappeared, however, when Mrs. Vidian told me it took her almost a week to knit one sweater.

I was crushed. Then I remembered father’s words. There must be other Armenian women in Paris who mastered the special stitch. Then I searched for any Armenians living in Paris. At last I tracked down several. Two weeks later, the first shipment was on its way to the United States!

From that day on orders poured in. Then came another test. As I was busy getting ready to show my winter fashions, the sewing girls were called out on strike. Where was the way out this time? I wondered and worried. Then it dawned on me.

I worked hurriedly. And right on time, my show took place. Some coats had no sleeves; some were only patterns made of heavy cotton cloth, but on these I attached material to show what colors and textures the clothes would have when they were finished. What a show! Once again father’s words helped me.

6 . I’ve loved my mother’s desk since I was just tall enough to see above the top of it as mother sat doing letters. Seeing what Mother was doing, I thought that the act of writing must be the most wonderful thing in the world.

My mother was a kind person, who always showed her love on me in action. However, as a little girl, I only wanted heart-to-heart talks between mother and daughter. But such talks never happened. I was sad about it and often rude to her, eager to start a new life somewhere else.

7 . In my memory, my dad always encouraged me to be my best self, explore the world, and believe in those who cared and loved me, which helped to make me who I am today. Besides, I’ve grown up with a pretty good model that my father always was.

One year, my father nearly lost his life. He was twenty-seven years old then. For several months, he’d been suffering from stomach pains. My dad was a former track star, so he knew how to handle pain. Convinced it was nothing serious, he just made a face until it was over whenever it flared up. My mom and dad were visiting his parents in Englewood, New Jersey when extreme pain struck my dad again. However, that time, the pain didn’t fade away although my father tried to take control of it. Meanwhile, my dad developed a high fever. My grandparents rushed him to a nearby hospital. The doctors in the emergency room were confused about his condition. My dad’s symptoms seemed consistent with appendicitis (阑尾炎), but the pain wasn’t localized to the lower part of his stomach, where the appendix (阑尾) is located. While they were debating what to do, a 33-year-old surgeon named Dr. Ibrahim, spoke up, “It must be an appendix.” Dr. Ibrahim guessed it was a rare condition and insisted that my dad should receive an operation immediately, although others were against his decision.

Dr. Ibrahim turned out to be very correct. My dad was wheeled into surgery and his appendix was removed just before it could burst and cause a deadly infection. At last, he got rid of danger.

What if my father hadn’t been in Englewood that day? What if young Dr. Ibrahim hadn’t considered? He was in the right place at the right time, and it saved his life. Now I am a father of two children. Like my father I will never forget Dr. Ibrahim.

10 . On January 22, 2022, the British-Belgian 19-year-old, Zara Rutherford, successfully landed her two-seat microlight aircraft back at the Kortrijk-Wevelgem Airport, from where she had departed 155 days ago, fulfilling her dream to be the youngest woman to fly around the world solo.

“I feel excited not only to break the Guinness World Record, but also to diminish the gender gap by 11 years between the current youngest male record holder Travis Ludlow 18 at the time of his record, and the previous female record holder Shaesta Waez, who was 30 when she completed her ‘Dreams Soar’ around-the-world flight.” Rutherford wrote on her blog.

Rutherford’s journey crossing five continents and 52 countries began on August 18, 2021. She encountered numerous unexpected delays along the way. They included an unscheduled stop in Redding, California, due to wildfires and a month-long stop in Nome, Alaska, to renew her Russian visa. She also faced several challenges in the air. When flying from Iceland to Greenland, Rutherford lost radio contact with her ground team for much of the 3-hour flight. The incidents also resulted in her having to cross over Russia in sub-zero temperatures. The hardest part was flying over Siberia — it was extremely cold and if the engine broke down, she’d be hours away from rescue. Despite the severe difficulties, the determined young pilot never gave up on her dream.

Rutherford grew up around airplanes. Her British father flies commercially, while her Belgian mother is a recreational pilot. The young girl began learning how to fly at age 14 and obtained her aviators license in 2020. With her goal of flying around the world accomplished, Rutherford now has her sights set even higher. She wants to become an astronaut and explore space.

She hopes that her journey will encourage more young women to pursue careers in aviation. Currently the number of female pilots is just 5 percent. Rutherford says, “It’s an easy thing to say, but just go for it. If you don’t try and see how high you can fly, then you’ll never know.”

1. What does the underlined word “diminish” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Cause.B.Divide.C.Narrow.D.Expand.
2. Why did Rutherford have to stop in Nome?
A.The wildfires were too fierce.B.Her Russian visa was due.
C.The weather was too severe.D.Her engine broke down.
3. What’s the purpose of Paragraph 4?
A.To switch to a new topic.B.To summarize her achievements.
C.To illustrate her admirable talents.D.To add some background information.
4. What does the passage try to convey?
A.Life is not all roses.B.Dream big, aim high.
C.Not to advance is to go back.D.The greatest talkers, the least doers.
