The ancient town of Fenghuang is a place with beautiful village life in rural China. Having travelled directly from the busy city, I regard Fenghuang as a better     1     (choose) to have a breath of the fresh air.

When I paid     2     visit to Fenghuang, it was July. My friend and I     3    (excited) explored, walking along the ancient wall and crossing the beautiful, old bridges. People there were very     4    (relax). They were neither troubled by the hot weather nor by the tourists, walking, eating and playing outdoors.     5     the first evening we bought spicy, cold noodles and ate on the riverbank as we watched the sunset.

We stayed in a small hotel     6     was similar to many of the traditional     7     (building) in the village. Our room was built on high stilts(桩子) over the banks of the river. We saw people at work busy catching fish and young children playing in shallow waters.

In ancient China lived an artist     1     paintings were almost lifelike. The artist’s reputation had made him proud. One day the emperor wanted to get his portrait (画像) done so he called all great artists to come and present their     2     (fine) work, so that he could choose the best. The artist was sure he would     3     (choose), but when he presented his masterpiece to the emperor’s chief minister, the old man laughed. The wise old man told him to travel to the Li River — perhaps he could learn a little from the greatest artist in the world.

He passed milky white waterfalls and mountains in many shades of blue. And when he saw the mists (水雾) rising from the river and the soft clouds     9     (surround) the mountain tops, he was reduced to tears. The artist was finally humbled (谦卑) by the     10     (great) artist on earth, Mother Nature.

Anna had a car accident when she was a teenager. She lost her arms because of that. What’s     1     (bad), when she was 20 years old, she lost her parents. Her sister,     2     is ten years older than her, told Anna she’d take care of her. However, Anna refused     3     (live) with her. Instead, Anna said she’d take care of     4     (she). 13-year-old Chen Shuyin, who graduated     1     a high school this summer in the city of Zhanjiang, Guangdong Province, is now a freshman at Zhejiang University School of Medicine.

Chen has excelled at every stage of her educational career. At the age of seven, she    2    (attend) a middle school, after only just one year’s study in primary school. She was always within the top 30 students while she was there. When Chen turned 9, she    3    (admit) to a local high school after     4    (gain) the 13th highest score in the city. She took the National College Exam at 12, achieving a score that was more than one hundred points    5     (high) than that needed to be accepted by a first-class university in China.

Chen’s father says his daughter is not    6     (difference) from most kids of her age. She is quite quiet and likes to read in her spare time, and has good learning skills
