1 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

I am a proud mother of three children, my last little one being delivered in the middle of this pandemic (疫情). She was born in August and her name is Aida.

Shortly after having Aida, my mother-in-law Ann showed me something she learned from her friend’s mother in an art class she attended weekly, She had showed me how to knit (编织) a scarf.

I spent a lot of time breastfeeding my sweet little girl, so I had some extra time to do something with my hands throughout the day. I enjoyed making the scarf so I purchased tons of yarn (线) since it was winter. I wanted to make scarves for my three children as Christmas gifts.

There was a new family that moved in down the street. The only daughter of the family was Jane, a shy girl, aged 14, the same age of my oldest son David. It seemed that she came from a financially disadvantaged family, for she always wore old clothes. Worse still, in such cold days, she had no more clothes to wear and trembled with cold.

Due to the pandemic, society was thrown into crisis mode. Schools were closed, food supplies and deliveries were suspended and children were stuck at home. In such discouraging time, however, they became good companions, talking and playing at home or around the houses.

It was dreadfully cold this winter. Every time David came back from outside, with red face, he always cried, “Mum, it is freezing outside!” Then, he came over to see whether I finished the scarf. I could tell how impatient he was to wear my scarf sooner! I had to speed the project to satisfy his expectation. But David comforted me by saying he could wait a few days. What a kind and considerate boy he was! Then my great art project finally was accomplished on the morning ahead of Christmas.

Spenser’s First Web

Spenser was a small black spider (蜘蛛). Like all of his brothers and sisters, he had eight legs to help him walk and run. He was now big enough to know how to move all his legs together and not trip over them. Spenser was getting bigger every day.

Today Spenser felt nervous. It was time for him to learn to spin (织) a web on his own. He had watched his mother build beautiful, soft webs from the silk she made herself.   His mother’s webs were lovely. They took a long time to make, and in the morning, they were covered with drops of dew that made them look like castles.

“OK, Spenser,” said Ms. Spinney. “It’s time to spin your first web. Let’s begin by making a big plus sign.” Ms. Spinney was Spenser’s teacher. She was old and small but very strong. She quickly used her silk to make a plus sign between two nearby leaves.

Spenser was able to make silk, but he had trouble attaching it to anything. No matter how hard he tried, the threads (丝) slipped away and fell to the ground. Spenser tried hard, but he was getting tired.

“Take a break, Spenser,” said Ms. Spinney. “You’re trying very hard, but I can see that you’re getting frustrated (沮丧的).”

“I’m not frustrated!” said Spenser. “I’m mad that I’m not good at it, and I’m sad that I can’t do it. ”Spenser felt like he was going to cry.

A Sepcial Christmas Gift

December 1st. Always on that day, Mom would softly announce, “It’s time.” When we heard those words, we all knew was time to write our letters to Santa. So, we began our special letters. Jimmy asked for a baseball. Wilbur like anything to do with art. This was my letter to Santa.

My Mom and Dad say I have been very good this year. I only want two toys this year. But what I want most is a dog. I have been asking for one all year. Mom and Dad say we can’t afford to feed an animal right now. It makes me sad, but it’s alright. Maybe next year Mom will say it’s OK. That’s all, Santa. Say hi to Mrs. Claus. And Merry Christmas.

Love, Sheila

The next morning we would walk three blocks to the large red, white and blue mailbox on the corner of Stimson and Forth. It was a special mailbox, only for letters children wrote to Santa.

Christmas Eve finally arrived. I was so excited that I found it difficult to fall asleep. But sleep finally came and so did Christmas morning. I woke up hearing my brothers down the hall shouting at my Mom and Dad. “Wake up! Wake up! Santa came! Come on! Come on!” Jimmy came running and jumping on my bed. “Santa’s been here! Come on! Let’s open presents!”

We all ran downstairs. Our eyes were shining like wildfire as we eyed over plenty of presents under the tree. Then Dad handed out the gifs one at a time. I kept watching as my brothers unwrapped gift after gift. Dad said, “This year you are going to be last to get your presents, because you are the oldest.” I didn’t think anything of it but nodded.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

When I was a boy, I had the craziest bus ride to school everyday. First I had to get up early, wolf down my breakfast, and walk across the shaky and swinging wooden bridge that crossed the river between our house and the main road. Then I stood and waited for the bus to arrive. When it got there I climbed in. I was always one of the first ones on the bus. Then even though the bus was only 4 miles from school, I started a ride that would last more than 45 minutes.

First, the bus went in the opposite direction for 6 miles, parked and waited for another bus to transfer kids onto it. Then it started back, but instead of going straight to my school, it started up a long and winding mountain road pausing at every house to pick up more kids. The road swirled around the mountain and back down with the bus getting fuller, louder, and noisier with each stop. Finally, it arrived at the high school to drop off the older kids before heading on to my grade school. But even then it didn’t go straight there but instead headed down another rocky dirt road that was full of potholes to pick up even more children. I usually got to the school stressed, tired, and just before the first class bell rang.

Thankfully, the ride home was different. During it the last kids picked up became the first kids dropped off. But I was different. Since my house was along the way, I got dropped off after just 10 minutes or so. I remember I would literally run across that shaky old bridge because I was so happy to be home again.

Appreciation of Hard Work

A young man applied for a managerial position in a big company. In the last interview, the director of the company found that the young man was excellent all the way, from the secondary school until the postgraduate research.

The director asked, “Did you obtain any scholarships in school?”

The youth answered, “None.”

The director asked, “Was it your father who paid for your school fees?”

The youth answered, “My father passed away when I was one year old. It was my mother who paid for my school fees.”

The director asked, “Where did your mother work?”

The youth answered, “My mother worked as a clothes cleaner.”

The director asked the youth to show his hands. The youth showed his smooth hands.

The director asked, “Have you ever helped your mother wash the clothes before?”

The youth answered, “Never, my mother always asked me to study and read more books. Besides, my mother can wash clothes faster than me.”

The director said, “I have a request. When you go back today, clean your mother’s hands and then see me tomorrow morning.”

When he went back, he happily asked his mother to let him clean her hands. His mother felt strange but happy. The youth cleaned his mother’s hands slowly. His tears fell as he did that. It was the first time he noticed that his mother’s hands were so wrinkled, and there were so many bruises in her hands. Some bruises were so painful that his mother shivered when they were cleaned with water. I live in a city where jobs are difficult to get and if you want to find a well-paid job, it will be even harder. Therefore, it is not surprising for you to see many people in our city walk a long way because they can’t even afford an old used car.

It was a cold windy day. I saw one of these people who often have to walk from and to work every day, when I was driving after work. A middle-aged man wearing only a thin overcoat was walking down the road and trying to ask for a ride from the passing cars. Unluckily, there was no driver willing to stop their cars. When I saw two cars in front of me pass him by, I wanted to do the same. But the sight of that poor man remained in my mind for quite a moment. I felt as if a big hand was dragging me and forcing me not to leave. Finally I drew back and gave him a ride.

As I drove along, we had a conversation, during which he told me something about himself and his family. I learnt that the man was doing everything he could to support his family using the limited salary from several part-time jobs. As you could imagine, every coin he earned was going to be used to pay for the house and food.

It was a long drive before we got to his home. All the way, I could feel his hardship and tiredness. But as we came close to the house where he was living, I saw his tired eyes grow bright and the whole body was lit up. His lovely girl was playing in the front yard. Seeing her father was out of the car, she ran to him as quickly as possible, reaching out her two small hands. He held the girl with his two strong hands, laughing and kissing her cheeks. I was lost in that happy moment. I smiled, said goodbye to them, wished them the future happiness and then drove off.

10 . Forty years ago, a simple act of kindness would forever shape the course of a young refugee's life when she set foot in Canada for the first time.

Dr. Nhung Tran—Davies was only five years old when she and her family arrived at the Edmonton airport in 1979.They had run away from their home because of the war and were living in a Malaysian refugee camp before a Canadian church sponsored them to immigrate to Canada,

When they passed through the gates of the airport, a young girl named Adrienne was waiting for Tran—Davies with a special gift. “This little girl presented me a little doll. It lit up my heart, and in that moment, it meant everything to me,” Tran—Davies told CTV's Your Morning on Thursday. “The doll came to represent all the kindness, compassion(同情), and generosity of Canadians, and I believed that our lives would become better.”

And while it may have seemed like a small gesture, that girl had an effect for Tran—Davies who was inspired to become a doctor and help of hers. “Knowing now that all that I have, and all that I've become, is because of this simple act of kindness, I live to this day to play forward the kindness,” she said.

Tran—Davies has done this by recently sponsoring a refugee family who also ran away from the war. When the family she sponsored arrived at the Edmonton airport, Tran—Davies stood at the gates with a doll of her own for the youngest daughter Alma.

“It was my turn now, 40 years later. It was just an amazing, important moment for myself, but I think it meant something to her, because I know that in 40 years it will be her turn to make Canada a more beautiful place,” she said.

As for the original doll Tran—Davies received, it's being displayed across the country in a travelling exhibit called Refuge Canada. The doll also inspired Tran—Davies to write a children's book titled The Doll, which describes her experiences and how a single act of kindness can be passed on for years to come.

1. Why did Tran—Davies go to Canada forty years ago?
A.To escape from the war.B.To live a different life.
C.To pass on her kindness.D.To continue further study.
2. What is not one of the impacts that the doll had on Tran—Davies?
A.It gave her the hope for a better life.
B.It inspired her to be kind and help others.
C.It made her set a career goal of being a doctor.
D.It changed her original impression of Canadians.
3. What did Tran—Davies do to pay back the little girl's kindness?
A.She donated money to the poor.
B.She improved refugees' living conditions.
C.She helped a refugee family come to Canada.
D.She provided free medical services to refugees.
4. Why did Tran—Davies say “It was my turn now,40 years later”in the sixth paragraph?
A.She contributed much to Canada.
B.She gave Alma a doll on her arrival.
C.She passed the original doll to Alma.
D.She showed the refuge family around Edmonton.
