I was a proud mother of three children, my last little one being delivered in the middle of this pandemic. She was born in August and her name is Aida.
Shortly after having Aida, my mother-in-law showed me something she learned from her friend’s mother in an art class she attended weekly. She had shown me how to knit a scarf (织围巾). She showed me stitches and gave me her half done project. I spent a lot of time breastfeeding my sweet little girl, so I had some extra time to do something with my hands throughout the day. I enjoyed making the scarf so I purchased tons of yarn since it was winter. I wanted to make scarves for my three children as Christmas gifts.
There was a new family that moved in down the street. The only daughter of the family was Jane, a shy girl, aged 14, the same age of my oldest son David. It seemed that she came from a financially disadvantaged family, for she always wore old clothes. Worse still, in such cold days, she had no more clothes to wear and trembled with cold.
Due to the pandemic, society was thrown into crisis mode. Schools were closed, food supplies and deliveries were suspended and children were stuck at home. In such discouraging times, however, they became good companions, talking and playing at home or around the houses.
It was dreadfully cold this winter. Every time David came back from outside, with red face, he always cried, “Mum, it’s freezing outside!” then he came over to see whether I finished the scarf. I could tell how impatient he was to wear my scarf sooner! I had to speed the project to satisfy his expectation. But David comforted me saying he could wait a few days. What a kind and considerate boy he was! Then my great project finally was accomplished on the morning ahead of Christmas.

A Moment of Kindness
A lioness with her cub (幼崽) was moving around in the jungle searching for their prey(猎物) . While coming out from the den (洞穴), the baby asked her mother, “Mum, why are we going out for prey when a deer is already at home? Let us eat it first, then we can search for the next.”
The mother smiled and licked her child with love and said, “No, my love! We can’t eat that deer because it has no choice but to seek our help. He is wounded and helpless. We must help him.”
The baby cub was surprised and questioned again, “Why so, Mum? That’s our food.”
“Honey, you are absolutely right! It’s our food, but this particular deer is well aware that if we want, we can kill him in a second. Do you think that he deserves to be killed when he has come to us in a hope that we would protect him?”
The baby cub couldn’t understand her mother. It kept quiet and paced with its mother. That was not a lucky day for them. They didn’t get any prey even after a long search. At last, they came back to their den.
The deer on the other hand was terrified of his own decision. He was attacked by a hunter and managed to escape. While running for his life, he saw the den and without a second thought entered it. When he realized that he was in the lion’s den, he gave up the idea of running back again. At that time, the lioness and her cub were present over there. The deer stared at the lioness with a pitiful look. Tears were rolling down.
The lioness understood his hopeless condition. She came closer to the deer, smelled it and slowly moved out of the den with her cub for hunting.

Spenser’s First Web
Spenser was a small black spider (蜘蛛). Like all of his brothers and sisters, he had eight legs to help him walk and run. He was now big enough to know how to move all his legs together and not trip over them. Spenser was getting bigger every day.
Today Spenser felt nervous. It was time for him to learn to spin (织) a web on his own. He had watched his mother build beautiful, soft webs from the silk she made herself. His mother’s webs were lovely. They took a long time to make, and in the morning, they were covered with drops of dew that made them look like castles.
“OK, Spenser,” said Ms. Spinney. “It’s time to spin your first web. Let’s begin by making a big plus sign.” Ms. Spinney was Spenser’s teacher. She was old and small but very strong. She quickly used her silk to make a plus sign between two nearby leaves.
Spenser was able to make silk, but he had trouble attaching it to anything. No matter how hard he tried, the threads (丝) slipped away and fell to the ground. Spenser tried hard, but he was getting tired.
“Take a break, Spenser,” said Ms. Spinney. “You’re trying very hard, but I can see that you’re getting frustrated (沮丧的).”
“I’m not frustrated!” said Spenser. “I’m mad that I’m not good at it, and I’m sad that I can’t do it. ”Spenser felt like he was going to cry.

In my local elementary school, I saw a child who looked bowed by burdens which were too heavy for his small shoulders. Tears ran down his cheeks. He was in a blue shirt, which is my favourite color. He sat alone at a desk in the back of his fourth-grade classroom, with his face to the wall of backpacks, coats, scarves, lunch boxes and little boots.
“Tony, you hadn’t done a bit of work all week,” his teacher said, looking in his direction. Her expression was that combination of helplessness and frustration I have seen too often on teachers who have too many students and too little help with the difficult ones.
I was a substitute for the special-education teacher, who provides individual and small-group instruction for kids who have difficulty in a regular classroom. I am untrained in psychology and inexperienced in special-education children. The only ice breaker I learned was: I’ll tell you one thing about me, then you tell me one thing about you. Except that, I didn’t know other ways to connect those special-education children.
Tony was not among the three students I’d be taking to the small special-education room for a math lesson. But I always thought of him as I taught the other three how to add numbers. Why was he sitting alone? Why was he weeping silently? Children usually cry or sob; they do not suffer in silence.
I looked up and saw the brightly coloured motivational poster on the wall. I put it up the day before. Seeing the words “You are worthy. You are loved.” on it, I wanted to help Tony.
That afternoon, I returned to Tony’s classroom and was met by his teacher, Max, who told me he loved reading. My other students for the reading lesson included Tony.
He was still sitting in the back of the classroom, still weeping silently. He didn’t argue when I asked him to come for his lesson: He simply didn’t move. His teacher comforted him. Max promised him the lesson would be fun. I promised to bring him back if he felt uncomfortable. Slowly, he got up. He followed Max and me into the reading room, tears dropping on the floor.

A very wealthy merchant(商人) had very little to worry about in his life. He had all the material comforts. But his biggest concern was his son. His son was very lazy and showed no intelligence or creativity, much less any willingness to work.
As the son was getting older and it was time for him to get married, the merchant was worried that his son was not ready for the family responsibility, “My lazy son doesn’t have the wisdom or will to work. How will he ever be able to make a living?”
But the mother couldn’t see the flaws(缺点) in her son and had set her heart on finding a wife for her son. So she urged the merchant to find a suitable girl from a good family for her son. She talked about how her son had improved and grown wiser with time and how he was ready for marriage.
The merchant finally gave up to the mother. “But I have a condition. The girl who is supposed to marry our son should buy one item with this small one coin, But that one item must he something to eat, something to drink, something to plant in the garden, and some food for the cow, ”Then the merchant handed over the small coin to his son and asked him to find a girl who could do that.
“But that is impossible; how can anyone get something that can do so many things with such a small amount of money?” said the mother. But the boy was optimistic(乐观的) and went to the town to find the girl who could do that, In the town, he met many beautiful women, daughters of wealthy merchants, but no one could think of anything to buy with the coin.
But the young man did not lose hope and visited every household that had girls of marriageable age. The last house in the town was of an ironsmith(铁匠), The boy was tired and sad when he went to the house. A young girl looking at the sad boy asked him what the problem was. The boy explained to her the task he had. “Oh, that is easy, I can do that,” the girl claimed.
