1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

When I was ten years old, I lived with my family in a small house in rural South Jersey. I often accompanied my mother to the A&P to buy goods. Without a car, we walked, and I would help her carry the bags.

My mother had to shop very carefully, as she was a waitress, and the money she earned could only raise the family. One day. while she was waiting in line to pay for the goods, a promotional (促销的) display for the World Book“ Encyclopedia (百科全书)” caught my eye. The books were beautifully cream-colored and you could buy one only with ninety-nine cents if you had already had a ten-dollar purchase.

All I could think of while shopping was the book. I stood at the check-out counter with my mother, holding my breath as the cashier rang up the items. It came to over eleven dollars. My mother took out a five, and a handful of change. As she was counting out the money, I somehow found the courage to ask for the encyclopedia. “Could we get one?” I said, showing her the display. “It’s only ninety-nine cents.”

I did not understand my mother’s increasing anxiety: she did not have enough change and had to give up a large can of peas to pay the amount. “Not now, Patricia,” she said seriously. “Today is not a good day.” I packed the goods and followed her home, upset.

The next Saturday, my mother gave me a dollar and sent me to the A&P alone. Two bottles of milk and a loaf of bread--that’s what a dollar in 1957. I went straight to the World Book display. There was only one encyclopedia left, which I placed in my cart. I didn’t need a cart, but took one so I could read as I went up and down the aisles (过道). A lot of time went by and I knew I had to leave, but I couldn’t bear to part with the book. With no security guard in sight, I, quickly, put it inside my shirt and zipped (扣上拉链) up my jacket. I was a tall, thin kid, and I am certain the shape of the book was obvious.

2 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

In 1989, fresh out of high school, I had the difficult task of choosing a career path before college started in three months. In those days in Pakistan, there were limited choices: becoming a doctor or an engineer, or entering the financial world after getting a business degree. I wasn’t interested in engineering, so that I was left with medicine or business. I couldn’t decide.

My uncle suggested that I do a work placement(实习) to experience it for a month in an international company followed by a month in a hospital. After that, I could make a decision. It seemed like a good idea.

I was accepted for a month’s placement at a foreign bank in Karachi. I got a feel of how the world of finance functioned, made new friends, and generally enjoyed the mostly easygoing work surroundings.

The month passed rapidly, and soon I began working at a leading hospital in Karachi. The experience couldn’t have been more different. The hospital had a stressful environment. The days started early (at 7 am, compared to 9 am at the bank), and were filled with endless duties. And the night calls! This was crazy, working all day, through the night, and again the next day.

I began thinking about my two experiences. The bank had offered a more relaxing atmosphere, better working hours and less stress. The hospital was full of excitement, but studying and training were difficult. It seemed that the business choice was going to win out.

Near the end of my month at the hospital, I was driving home after an especially busy night call. In front of me was a public bus, with college students sitting on the top. As the driver weaved through (穿梭) traffic, I could see the boys shaking from side to side.

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was 11 p.m. when Alex Conrad saw the woman on the Main Street Bridge. She was standing by the railing, peering down at the rushing Chippewa River below. At her feet was what appeared to be a backpack.

Maybe she’s fishing, Conrad, then 20, thought as he continued driving his car to his home a short distance away. His friend’s car had broken down, so Conrad was making a quick pit stop to grab some tools before heading out to help.

Tools in hand, he climbed into his car. Instead of taking a shortcut, though, he chose to head back over the bridge. Something about that woman didn’t sit right. Why would she be fishing this late at night— in May, when it’s still cold in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin?

As he crossed the quarter-mile-long bridge, Conrad saw the woman standing in the same spot. He pulled a U-turn and parked on a zebra crossing some 20 feet away with the hazards lights flashing, blocking one of the four lanes. In case there was trouble, he hoped another driver would take note and help.

He stepped out of his car and got a clearer picture of the scene. The woman was in her 20s,dressed in pants and a heavy coat. What he’d thought was a backpack was in fact rope pooled by her feet. One end was tied to a bridge post. The other, around her neck.

“Hey, what’s going on?” Conrad called out. He pretended not to see the rope although he knew exactly what was going on.

She spoke unwillingly, but he kept probing(追问), eventually pulling from her that she was going through a particularly rough difficulty. She was jobs, not doing well in school—in short, life wasn’t working out as she’d hoped.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。主要讲述了作者勇斗熊营救自己的宠物狗的故事。

4 . It was the day before Thanksgiving and Kaleb Benham was wandering around outside his home in Noring California. His 90-pound pit bull, Buddy, was playing around nearby, doing what dogs do: getting into trouble. And this time, Buddy was getting into a whole lot of trouble.

The unmistakable sound that no one wants to hear alone in the woods caught Benham’s attention. It was the deep, strange roar of a black bear. Benham wheeled around to see the beast, which Benham figured weighed around 350 pounds, some 100 feet away. In an instant, the bear fastened on to Buddy’s head and started dragging him away.

Benham, a thin, fit 24-year-old, took off after them. “Honestly,” he told CBS13, “the only thing I could think of was ‘save my baby’.” Sprinting, he lowered his shoulder and plowed into the bear. But it only tightened its grip on Buddy. Benham grabbed the bear by the throat. Nothing. He tried getting its mouth open, but the jaw was locked tight. Benham resorted to street fighting—punching the bear over and over around its snout and eye. It worked. The bear dropped the dog and ran off into the woods.

Buddy was in bad shape. His face was bloodied and ripped up. His ears were dangling. He had a bite mark clear through his lip and one that barely missed an eye.

“My first thought was that I was going to lose him,” Benham said. He scooped up Buddy, put him into his car, and sped off to a nearby veterinarian. Buddy’s surgery took nearly four hours. Benham watched the procedure through a window. “I just stood there,” he said, watching as Buddy’s ears were stapled back on and skin flaps were stitched, and tubes were inserted into his head to drain fluid.

This was the second time Benham had rescued Buddy, says CBS13. The first was from a shelter a few years ago. “If it was your kid, what would you do?” he asked. Nodding toward Buddy, he added, “That’s my kid.”

1. What is the text mainly about?
A.A demanding surgery.B.A regular routine.
C.A fearless pet dog.D.A daring rescue.
2. Why did the author mention the weight of the bear in paragraph 2?
A.To show the difficulty of the rescue.
B.To indicate the obesity of the bear.
C.To prove the excitement of Benham.
D.To describe the fear in Buddy’s heart.
3. How was the dog finally saved from the bear?
A.Benham bumped into the beast with dropped shoulder.
B.Benham forced open the beast’s mouth with locked jaw.
C.Benham crushed the beast’s mouth and nose repeatedly.
D.Benham finally conquered the beast by grabbing its throat.
4. Which word can best describe the relationship between Benham and Buddy?
A.Complicated.B.Close.
C.Romantic.D.Healthy.

8 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

You know how when big things in your life aren’t going well and the little things bother you more? That happened to me last year. Like many people during the pandemic, my husband, Paul, was laid off. I was still working, but my job was only part-time and would likely be ending soon too. I was worried about money, pandemic and our future.

That’s when our mailboxes really started getting to me. I’d never liked our mailboxes much. They stood at the end of our long driveway, far enough away from our house. Fortunately, I didn’t see them often. The mailboxes had already been in rough shape when we moved in and the paint was faded.

At some point, someone had driven into the pole. It was now bent slightly, making the mailboxes bend, pointing in different directions. Still, because the boxes could hold the mail and the mail carrier wasn’t complaining, there really was no need to replace them.

“I wish we could have better mailboxes,” I found myself thinking as I pulled out of the driveway one day on my way to work. It was just a passing thought. I probably would have forgotten all about it if not for the news we got the next morning.

The next day, my neighbor Ailsa told me a girl drove her car right into the mailboxes and completely knocked them down. Ailsa saw the accident and gave her our number and information. “That certainly wasn’t in our budget,” I thought. Though I wanted new mailboxes, getting them would be expensive. With our income decreasing since Paul’s layoff, this was an expense we didn’t need. I sighed.

However, the next day where our old, rusted mailboxes had once stood were two new shiny mailboxes-one black, one white. Each one had large, neat numbers on the sides, the white mailbox with black numbers and the black one with white numbers. They were beautiful. I sat there, feeling surprised.

10 . One year, a college in the United States announced that it would offer a lot of money for the pure white marigold (金盏花). The high reward attracted so many people, but in nature, besides golden, the marigold is brown, and it is not easy to get the white one. So after they were excited for a time, many people had forgotten the announcement.

One normal day after 20 years, the college received a letter and 100 seeds of pure white marigold. It was an old woman of over 70 years old. Some experts in the college doubted it, but in order not to let her down, those seeds finally took root (根) in the earth. The miracle appeared after one year; the field was covered by pure white marigold.

Finally, after 20 years on the day we all know, in the garden she saw a marigold, which was nearly white, but as white as silver or snow.

A problem even experts couldn’t deal with was solved by an old woman who didn’t understand genetics. Was it a miracle (奇迹)?
