1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

One morning, as I walked to the market, I saw an old man, with a bandanna(印花大方巾) covering his face, sitting in front of a tea shop. He seemed to be just watching the traffic on the road, not paying attention to anyone. His bandanna was dirty and his clothes were crumpled(褶皱的). His hair stuck out because he wore a cap that didn’t fit well. I quickly assumed he was a beggar asking for money. I decided to give him some change on my way back from the market.

A little further down the road, there was a young man lying on the pavement(人行道) with his arms outstretched(张开的). No one passing by paid any attention to him. It seemed that he had drunk too much. Thus, I thought to myself that he was just a worthless man who had spent all his money on wine.

I finished my shopping at the market and headed back. Before reaching the point where the old man sat, I took out all the change I wanted to give to him. When I approached him and held out the change, he barely looked at me, but still looked ahead. He shook his head as if he was saying he didn’t need it. I insisted and pushed the change into his hand. As I stood there feeling proud of my act of charity, the old man slowly got up and walked to the young man who was lying on the pavement. The old man kept down, woke the young man up and whispered something in his ear. It seemed that they knew each other. The young man seemed to respond and then shook his head. The old man walked back and headed for the tea shop.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。主要讲述了作者给正在写论文的女儿建议,让她和室友一起去海滩游玩,由此作者想表达的是大学记忆不仅仅是学术成就。

2 . “Should I go? I do have a lot of work to do.” The question came from my daughter, Tracy, a college senior, who was debating whether or not to go with her roommates on a Saturday to drive to the beach and enjoy some unseasonably warm March weather.

On the one hand, sand, sunshine, and perhaps some fried food were prizes she deserved after a hard-won year of college life; on the other hand, her thesis (论文) conclusion wasn’t going to write itself. As a rather type A student, Tracy was unsure if she should go, and had asked my opinion.

As I read her text, I remembered my own college road trips in the 80s. At that time, four of us theater students, anxious and disappointed about the posting of a cast list, had driven out to the countryside through apple orchards (果园). We stopped at the side of the road to climb over a stone wall to grab some apples from a tree, taking off laughing, and ending the trip with ice-creams. I still remember sitting at a picnic table with the kind of laughter that you hope will never end.

I texted my daughter back, “Take the day off and go to the beach. The thesis can wait.” Actually, I wanted to text her much more than that. I wanted to tell her that college is for so many things—academic and personal growth and challenges, all-night study sessions, paper deadlines, and office hours. But it’s also for road trips with your roommates and a chance to extricate every bit of stress and responsibility for a few hours.

College is for the memories that you don’t think are anything special right now. But someday, one of you will say, “Hey, remember that time on the beach?” And those precious memories are worth more than any thesis conclusion ever could be.

1. Why did Tracy hesitate to go to the beach?
A.She was kind of stay-at-home.B.She had to complete her paper.
C.She worried about the weather.D.She didn’t invite her roommates.
2. What made the author and his classmates decide to take a road trip at college?
A.Their demand for spiritual relief.
B.Their desire to test their new car.
C.Their need to experience country life.
D.Their plan for seeking play materials.
3. What does the underlined word “extricate” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Take on.B.Think of.C.Go through.D.Shake off.
4. What does the author want to convey in the text?
A.Good friends always make life happier.
B.Stress from college life can play its part.
C.College memories are more than academic achievements.
D.Academic achievements absolutely come first at college.

Long ago, there was a big apple tree. A little boy loved to come and play around it every day. He climbed to the top of the tree, ate the apples, and took a nap under the shadow. He loved the tree and the tree also enjoyed playing with him.

As time went by, the little boy grew up and he no longer played around the tree.

One day, the boy came back to the tree, appearing sad. “Come and play with me,” the tree asked the boy gently.

“I am no longer a kid; I won’t play around trees any more,” the boy replied. “I want toys. I need money to buy them.”

“Sorry, but I don’t have money. However, you can pick all my apples and sell them. Then, you will have money.” The boy was so excited that he picked all the apples on the tree and left happily. The boy didn’t come back after that.

The tree was upset.

One day, the boy returned and the tree was so joyful. “Come and play with me,” the tree said.

“I don’t have time to play. I have to work for my family. We need a house for shelter. Can you help me?” “Sorry, I don’t have a house. But you can cut off my branches to build your house.” So the boy cut all the branches of the tree and left with delight.

The tree was glad to see him happy but the boy didn’t appear since then. The tree was again lonely and sad.

One hot summer day, the boy returned and the tree was delighted. “Come and play with me!” the tree requested.

“I am sad and becoming old. I want to go sailing to relax myself. Can you give me a boat?”“Use my trunk to build the boat. You can sail and be happy.” So the boy cut the tree trunk to make a boat. He went sailing and did not show up for a long time.

Once upon a time a daughter complained to her father that her life was miserable and that she didn’t know how she was going to make it.She was tired of fighting and struggling all the time. It seemed just as one problem was solved, another one soon followed. Her father, a chef, took her to the kitchen. He filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire.

Once the three pots began to boil, he placed potatoes in one pot, eggs in the second pot and ground coffee beans in the third pot. He then let them sit and boil, without saying a word to his daughter. The daughter complained and impatiently waited, wondering what he was doing. After twenty minutes he turned off the burners. He took the potatoes out of the pot and placed them in a bowl. He pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. He then ladled (舀) the coffee out and placed it in a cup.

Turning to her, he asked, “Daughter, what do you see?”“Potatoes, eggs and coffee,” she quickly replied.

“Look closer,” he said, “and touch the potatoes.” She did and noted that they were soft.

He then asked her to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg.

Finally, he asked her to sip the coffee. “Father, what does this mean?” she asked.

He then explained that the potatoes, the eggs and the coffee beans had each faced the same boiling water. However, they reacted differently. The potatoes were in strong and hard, but in the boiling water, they became soft and weak. The eggs were fragile (易碎的), with the thin outer shell protecting their liquid inside until they were put in the boiling water. Then the inside of the eggs became hard. However, the ground coffee beans were unique. After they were exposed to the boiling water, they changed the water and created something new.

“Which one are you?” he asked his daughter. “When the disaster knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a potato, an egg, or a coffee bean?”

One day, when I was reading, I received a call from the principal (校长) of my high school to invite me to give a talk as a representative of alumni association (校友会). He asked me to speak to the group the next morning. I felt so honored to have got such an opportunity and immediately replied yes. But after the call, I became nervous and panicky.

The whole night, I polished my speech again and again, and practiced before a mirror until I could deliver the speech fluently. Even though I had made full preparations, I could not sleep with great anxiety. What if words failed me and didn’t attract audience at all? What if I forgot the words in the middle of the speech?... I was hesitating to call the principal with regret and tell him that I could not come. Finally, I gathered some courage to go. I thought, “If I miss this opportunity, surely the school will never invite me again to any of their programs.”

Anyway, I reached the school on time. Before giving the talk, my whole body was trembling. When my turn came and I started speaking, my heartbeat increased and my mouth went dry. I wasn’t even able to read the written speech properly. I was not aware of where I was standing and what I was reading. I just managed to finish the speech in a low voice. That was the day when I realized my biggest weakness, Public Speaking Anxiety.

A thin young boy loved football with all his heart. Practice after practice, he eagerly gave everything he had. But being half the size of the other boys, he got absolutely nowhere. At all the games, this hopeful athlete sat on the bench and hardly ever played. This teenager lived alone with his father, and the two of them had a very special relationship. Even though his son was always on the bench, the father was always in the stands cheering.

He never missed a game. This young boy was still the smallest of the class when he entered high school. His father continued to encourage him but made it very clear that he did not have to play football if he didn’t want to. But the young boy loved football and decided to hang in there. He was determined to try his best at every practice, and perhaps he would play when he became a senior.

When the young boy went to college, he decided to try out for the football team. Everyone was sure he could never make the cut, but he did. The coach admitted that he kept him in the team because he always put his heart and soul into every practice, and at the same time, provided the other team members with the spirit they badly needed. The news thrilled him so much that he rushed to the nearest phone and called his father. His father shared his excitement. This persistent young athlete never missed practice during his four years at college, but he never got to play in a game.

It was the end of the football season, and as he ran to the practice field shortly before a big playoff game, the coach met him with a telegram (电报). The young boy read the telegram and he became deathly silent. Crying hard, he said, “My father died this morning. Is it all right if I miss practice today?” The coach put his arm gently around his shoulder and said, “Take the rest of the week off, son. And don’t even plan to come back to the game on Saturday.”

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章讲述Beverly Cleary是作者成为儿童作家的原因,并对作者产生了较大影响。

9 . To the untrained eye, a ping-pong ball is just a ping-pong ball. To a Beverly Cleary fan, it's two motorcycle helmets(头盔)for mice. Just cut apart and add rubber band chin straps. Ever since I read Cleary's series about Ralph, the motorcycle-riding mouse, I've never looked at a ping-pong ball—or the world—the same way. And why shouldn't it be? It's perfect.

I wanted a mouse of my own to ride a toy motorcycle around my house! Thanks to Cleary's genius, a talking mouse friend seemed not only possible but probable.

Cleary, who passed away at 104, was one of the main reasons why I became a children's author. While much of children's literature attempted to explain the world from the point of view of a wise and gentle adult, Cleary created main characters who saw the world as only children can. I carefully read every title that bore Beverly Cleary's name. She seemed like a friend who understood me in ways I didn't yet understand myself.

I've written eight children's books and have always kept Beverly's sense of wonder in mind. I don't remember at exactly what age I decided I wanted to write books, but I know that in the second or third grade, my teacher assigned a project that allowed us to focus on whatever we wanted. My best friend picked dolphins while I chose children's authors. I told that story recently to a school group. One of the students said, "That's amazing! You did your project on children's authors and then you became one!" "Yes," I said.

And that perfectly sums up why I love writing for children: the lack of cynicism(愤世嫉俗), the belief that fantastic, magical things can happen. Best friends can become dolphins. Mice can ride toy motorcycles and become our friends.

That's what Beverly Cleary taught me. In the hands of a gifted storyteller, anything is possible…and very funny.

1. Why does the author use a ping-pong ball as an example?
A.To say the ball is their favorite for mice.
B.To express his thoughts about the topic.
C.To describe how mice ride the motorbike.
D.To stress the importance of reading stories.
2. Who is Beverly Cleary?
A.The author's favourite writer.B.The author's grandmother.
C.The author's teacher.D.The author's fan.
3. What do we know about the author from paragraph 4?
A.He took Cleary's sense of mind seriously.
B.He decided to help his teacher finish the project.
C.He has published several books on animals for children.
D.He clearly remembered when he wanted to write books.
4. What is the fifth paragraph mainly about?
A.The author's talent for telling a story.
B.The author's strong belief about magic.
C.The author's reasons for writing for children.
D.The author's interest in playing with dolphins.

My Kindergarten Hero

We had just completed a unit on community heroes, and I had given my kindergarten class a task to write or draw about their favorite hero. Each child was busy creating colorful masterpieces such as firefighters, policemen and doctors. Several students had chosen to draw larger-than-life brothers and sisters or moms and dads.

However, one little boy was having difficulty with the assignment. Cameron had touched my heart early in the school year. He had dark brown hair and wore his thick glasses. He looks like a younger version of Harry Potter at best. He often snorted (鼻息声) when he laughed, and the rest of the class would laugh along with him.

Cameron suffered from autism (自闭症), but that didn’t matter to me or his classmates. We all loved him just the way he was. He was full of wonderful stories and brought a special feeling to our classroom. I sat and watched as Austin worked with Cameron. Austin had a wonderful way of interacting with Cameron and he helped him find his hero. Within a few minutes, Cameron quickly began drawing blue lines and curves on his paper—he was particularly fond of the color blue.

Finally, it was time for everybody to share their hero pictures. I listened as each student proudly stood in front of the class, picture held high, and described his or her hero. Several students described their heroes by giving them superhuman strength. It was finally Cameron’s turn to share his hero. Cameron stood up and anxiously placed his large blue stick-figured drawing in front of his face. He then quickly burst out it was a picture of me. He added that I helped him learn things and then quickly sat back down. Tears began to form in the corner of my eyes, but nothing could have prepared me for what happened next.
