2 . It was “Disabilities Day at the Capitol ” and I was there, along with hundreds of Georgians, hoping to get the attention of our legislators (立法者). My thoughts ran back to the days when I was struggling to deal with my hearing loss learning, often dependent on others to help me hear. Now I stood under the gold dome of the Georgia Capitol, a member of the disabled community claiming the rights of people with disabilities.

After the rally (集会) I followed the crowd across the street to a free lunch. Although the crowd was huge, I managed to find a place to sit. I introduced myself to the young woman on my right, Kendall. However, with my hearing loss and her serious speech disorder, a conversation with her was next to impossible.

After a few moments, I realized that Kendall’s personal attendant (护工) was not present. I asked if anyone knew where she was and found out there had been a family situation and the attendant had to leave. “But,” I said, “who’s going to feed Kendall?” My thoughts were racing: someone had to help Kendall. In admitting her need I had to at once declare my responsibility to help.

Surprisingly, Kendall spoke clearly with her eyes. It was those eyes that spoke to me that day as we were waiting for lunch. I asked if I might serve her lunch. She nodded “Yes!” and her eyes said “Thank you!”

Helping Kendall that day shows an important belief of my life: We need each other. With or without a disability, it is our need for each other that makes us have a good life.

A.By calling her family.B.By feeding her lunch.
C.By admitting her need.D.By finding her attendant.

3 . Last semester in my final year of high school, I had a kind teacher whom I can never forget. I was not the best student when it came to writing tests. I had to work extra hard to get good marks, although I enjoyed learning. Anyway, this class that I truly enjoyed still had me struggling to do well on my tests. My teacher willingly helped me and was always willing to answer my questions, and I greatly appreciated it. He was a remarkable teacher, always reaching out to students and helping them achieve their greatest potential.

I remember the day of writing my final exam, I was the last one still writing in the exam room as always, reviewing my exam paper, while everyone else had already finished and left the room. After turning in my exam-paper, I started to leave the classroom, but decided to turn around and say what I had meant to say.

What I did right then was that I sincerely thanked my teacher for everything. What I said to him lastly meant a lot more to him than I thought it would —“I really enjoyed this class.” I did not think much about it. I was just being honest with him, but the look on his face was remarkable. He seemed really touched and appreciated my simple comment, just knowing that one of his students had truly enjoyed his class. That is what I call a simple, yet very meaningful act of kindness to brighten a teacher’s day, because they work so hard for us and truly inspire us to learn.

It is what we say and do to show concern to others that can make somebody else’s day extra special. I believe that a simple praise can mean a lot more than one can think.

1. What can we know from the first paragraph?
A.The author was good at learning.
B.The author didn’t do well in writing.
C.The classes had me struggling.
D.The teacher answered all my questions.
2. Why is the author thankful to his teacher?
A.He taught him how to learn.
B.He let him pass the tests.
C.He helped arouse his potential.
D.He listened to him patiently.
3. Which words can describe the teacher?
A.Honest and kind.B.Kind and outstanding.
C.Special and patient.D.Skillful and clever.
4. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.A teacher is always helping his students.
B.We should be honest with others.
C.We should appreciate others’ help.
D.A simple comment matters a lot to others.

5 . An unpleasant smell floated into my nose as the bowl of fried stinky tofu(臭豆腐) settled onto my grandmother’s dinner table. I immediately sat back. The smell ruined my appetite, and I pushed the dish away.

“It’s supposed to stink. Just give it a try!” my grandmother said.

Holding my breath, I unwillingly took a bite. To my surprise, the tofu beneath the fried skin was warm, soft, and mouthwatering. Since then, whenever I visited my grandmother’s house, I would rush to the kitchen for the stinky tofu with excitement. Thus, stinky tofu became more than a household tradition. It became my favorite dish.

Along with the stinky tofu, I would meet my Uncle Chan on every visit. As an immature boy, I never understood my uncle’s condition of Down syndrome(唐氏综合征).

He was an unfriendly and terrible creature in my eyes. He constantly walked around the house, talking to himself. Whenever he was within view, I would run away in fear.

However, one day, my view of my uncle suddenly changed. I was just getting out of my bed when I heard soft steps approaching. It was my uncle. My muscles froze. He slowly sat next to me and touched my face gently, as a mother would stroke (抚摸)a baby.

A wide smile emerged from his blank expression. How beautiful his smile was! I could not help but smile back. My fear disappeared gradually, and my muscles relaxed. For the first time, I could see softness and warmth in his eyes.

My uncle very much resembles stinky tofu. Stinky tofu smells unpleasant on the outside,   yet   feels   warm   and   soft   in   the   inside.   Like   stinky   tofu,   my   uncle’s   Down syndrome made me keep my distance at first. Yet, I learned that deep inside, he is harmless and has a loving nature.

Some people tend to look down upon disabled people and regard them as unfit for a regular life. As I was able to see through the outer surface of the tofu, these people are unable to see through the surface of prejudice(偏见). As a result, they judge the disabled with one glance.

The outside and inside of the stinky tofu exist as two extremely different worlds. Perhaps that is what makes it such a tasty dish. Not only is it delicious, stinky tofu offers a valuable lesson: never judge people at first glance, for true beauty comes from the inside.

1. Why did stinky tofu become the author’s favorite dish?
A.It was related to family tradition.
B.It turned out to be quite delicious.
C.Grandma encouraged him to try it.
D.His appetite for food had increased.
2. What did the author think of his uncle at first?
A.He was a quiet person.
B.He was an energetic guy.
C.He was an immature man.
D.He was a strange creature.
3. The author’s attitude towards Uncle Chan changed when .
A.Chan’s footsteps woke up the author
B.Chan showed his friendliness to the author
C.Chan displayed his love towards his mother
D.Chan’s blank expression made the author smile
4. The comparison between stinky tofu and the author’s uncle serves to _.
A.highlight the nature of Uncle Chan
B.analyze the family relationship
C.describe a childhood memory
D.introduce a traditional Chinese food
5. What does the author mainly want to tell us in the passage?
A.We shouldn’t judge by appearances.
B.A person’s taste changes over time.
C.Blood is thicker than water.
D.You are what you eat.

6 . When I was 3 years old, I was found to be deaf in my left ear and have a small problem in my right. Being hard of hearing has been difficult, but I’ve never lived in a state of self-hating sorrow.

Imagine being able to shut out all sounds as you lay your head down to sleep by simply rolling over onto one side. That’s my reality when I sleep on my “good ear”, and it even makes me feel like a superhero sometimes.

People call my deaf side my “bad ear”, but when I wear my hearing aid, I have access to a range of features (特征) that some other deaf people don’t.

In cinemas, for example, with one click of a button I can enjoy a whole film as though it were whispered to me from the mouths of the actors.

Having a hearing aid hasn't always felt good, however.

On the first day I got my aid, when I was 8, I took it to school for show-and-tell. As I explained how it worked to my classmates, a boy yelled out, “Aren’t those for old men?”

At that moment, I felt different. It took a long time for me to get over that sense of being so unlike my peers (同龄人).

But it’s not just choolkids who can make us deaf and hard-of-hearing people feel like burdens (负担).

Every video on social media that lacks subtitles, for example, means an entire community of deaf people is unable to enjoy it.

Completely deaf people are excluded from enjoying many movies too, as subtitles in cinemas are almost impossible to find.

And with hearing aids costing around $2,500 each, it can be hard for many people to afford to be able to listen to the things that others take for granted.

As for me, I can listen to music, enjoy films, and catch conversations – I’m lucky.

I’m deaf, but I can still hear everything. I’ve been blessed with wonderful life experiences.

1. The author once feel different from his peers because __________.
A.He can’t hear anything
B.He was laughed at by his classmates
C.He couldn’t enjoy without subtitles
D.He could shut out all sounds when sleeping on his “good ear”
2. Deaf people may have the following burdens EXCEPT _________.
A.being unable to afford hearing aids.
B.being unable to enjoy videos without subtitles
C.being embarrassed in front of their peers
D.being blessed with wonderful experiences
3. What does the underline pharse “are excluded from” probably mean?
A.are prevented fromB.are limited toC.are separated fromD.are reduced to
4. What is the author’s attitude toward his hearing difficulty?
A.It was a tough reality and caused him a lot of trouble.
B.It was a time of great sorrow and made him feel sad.
C.It gave him a chance to experience something special.
D.It helped him to live in his own world without sound.
