1 . My husband Robert and I had volunteered to help build an irrigation (灌溉) system for bananas in Zambia. The Heart of Africa Mission is run by local Zambians, with a focus on community development. We were there to share our agricultural (农业的) experience and knowledge with the African farmers.

We left snow-covered Alberta, Canada in January. We spent the next four weeks working side by side with the local Zambians in a banana plantation (种植园). The banana plantation would help make the Heart of Africa Mission self-supporting. It would also teach banana farming to the students there. Students would go on to teach others. It has done that and more. Through the jobs created, several families now have food, education for their children, and enough housing. The plantation is producing well and is a source of great pride for all who work there.

My husband worked hard at building the irrigation system. But the story he tells most often is of the young man who stopped us on one of our walks somewhere. He pointed to his bike, and laughing widely, told Robert, “Look, look, it still works.” Robert had repaired it for him. A bike in Zambia is like a truck in North America—necessary transportation for people and produce. Robert’s small effort made a big difference in this man’s life.

“We sure appreciate (感激) your sacrifice (牺牲),” our organizer often says. For us it was never a sacrifice, only an honor to have the chance to work in a place so far from our own, to be able to exchange ideas and thoughts. All this happened while living in a beautiful sunny country in the green of the rainy season, while at home in Alberta, the snow would cover the landscape (风景) for months. No, the volunteer work was never a sacrifice. It was only an honor.

1. What can we learn about the author from the first paragraph?
A.She likes to take adventures.B.She is probably an expert in agriculture.
C.She started the Heart of Africa Mission.D.She used to live in Africa for a long time.
2. Which of the following best describes the author’s volunteer job?
A.Costly.B.Tiring.C.Challenging.D.Fruitful.
3. Why did the young man stop the author and her husband?
A.To ask for help.B.To express his thanks.
C.To show his cycling skills.D.To tell them about his work.
4. Why did the author consider the volunteer work an honor?
A.It enabled her to work harder.B.It brought her public recognition.
C.It made her appreciate her life more.D.It allowed her to experience different things.

3 . I’ve been keeping an honesty journal for the past several months. The day I started the journal, my 6-year-old daughter asked me if the cat really went to sleep last year, and if that actually meant that I had killed him. I sighed, wondering if I should wait to start this honesty project until she was grown-up. But I braved it and told her that I had made the choice for him to die, because he was suffering and I wanted him to be at peace. She lost interest about halfway through my explanation.

It struck me that the choice to lie or be honest was often a choice between two equally undesirable things. Telling my daughter the truth did not make me happier, but lying wouldn’t have either.

Over all, I found that I struggled more with the small instances of honesty, rather than the big. So, when a client accidentally paid me twice for a project, there was no internal debate. It was $1,000, so obviously, I notified the client. But when the McDonald’s drive-through cashier gave me an extra dollar in change and the line had been so long and my kids were acting crazy in the back seat... it was a different story. Even though I gave the dollar back, I almost didn’t, because an extra dollar was such a small thing and seemed somehow justified.

Even though honesty felt like a struggle, I started to like how it felt. When I was more honest, I tended to feel better about my relationships and myself. I like the saying, “Everybody wants the truth, but nobody wants to be honest.” I didn’t always want to be honest. But I wanted the truth, and this focus on honesty helped me feel that I was doing my part.

The bottom line is that focusing on honesty is a way to actively engage with the world, instead of passively complaining about it. It might even make you feel like you have gold in your brain.

1. How did the author’s daughter react to her explanation?
A.She paid little attention to it.
B.She thought it was incredible.
C.She would rather the author lied to her.
D.She was very sad and blamed the author.
2. What lesson did the author learn from the cat event?
A.Telling a white lie was not acceptable.
B.Making the choice for the cat was wrong.
C.Lying and being honest were a tricky pair.
D.Telling the truth could make people happy.
3. What does the author want to show by mentioning her McDonald’s experience?
A.It’s crazy to choose to be honest.
B.People are likely to have two characters.
C.It’s the small instances that test one’s honesty.
D.People tend to ignore honesty concerning small things.
4. What is the author’s attitude toward honesty?
A.It is impossible to expect it.B.It is good to focus on it.
C.It is reasonable to popularize it.D.It is hard to learn from it.

文章大意:这是一篇议论文。文章论述了一个道理,那就是我们需要学会从遗憾中学习。

5 . How to Learn from Your Regrets

Regret’s benefits don’t come to us by chance.     1     . Here are three steps you can take the next time you find yourself thinking carefully about your past missteps.

Kill the ghost (鬼魂).

People often say their regrets keep coming to their mind. This suggests that regret is like a ghost. Bring your ghost out of the shadows by making a list of your regrets. Write down why each one still bothers you and its bad effects.     2    .

Forgive yourself.

3    , but sometimes you just can’t stop blaming yourself. Perhaps you dropped out of school decades ago and are constantly calculating today how much money you would be making if you had pressed on to graduation. Now is the time to declare: “I will not waste my life reliving a decision that cannot be changed.”

Collect your diploma.

Regret is like a school run by human nature. If you never experienced regret, you would keep repeating the same behaviors that led you to miss opportunities.     4    . Next. list all the ways that you can invest in your own skills and improvement right now — and get started.

Regrets may hurt.     5    , while trying to live without them is a lost opportunity to grow. Life is a journey full of pleasures and pains. To live it well and fully means learning from every bit of it, including the mistakes, and moving forward.

A.After you make a mistake, life moves on
B.Filling your mind with them is destructive
C.The ghost certainly doesn’t rule a person’s life
D.We have to seek them out on purpose to improve ourselves
E.You will find that a list is a lot less frightening than a ghost
F.You choose a life sentence for a poor decision you made in the past

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了作者想象自己晚年的生活会是一件可怕的事,然而,在去了老年护理中心以后,缓解了恐惧并对生活充满了感激。

6 . It has always been horrible for me to picture my life in old age. My recent visits to the senior care center, however, relieved some of my fears and provided valuable food for thought.

Looking for meaningful ways to spend my weekends after my exams, I signed up for a program of arts and crafts for the elderly run by my schoolmates. I was informed that the Renci Nursing Home, where the program would be held, accommodated some of the less fortunate elderly in Singapore. Some background research gave me the impression that many of them suffered from physical problems and had little family support. As a result, I expected the atmosphere there to be discouraging. And, judging by the lack of interest in the painting activities, I truly sensed a feeling of aimlessness there. Given that we live in a society in which the relationships between the generations are weakening, perhaps the disappointing atmosphere in the home wasn’t surprising. The people were cut off from the ties that make life meaningful.

Is it safe to say then that our lives after retirement will likely feel aimless? But after I spoke to a Portuguese-Chinese man, I thought that this wasn’t necessarily so. At the age of 90, he displayed a surprisingly strong sense of control over his life. His liveliness was exceptional among the elderly population in the home. He had spent his life either traveling around the world as a backpacker, or working hard in Singapore to save up for his trips. He had made it a rule to learn foreign languages, exercise and eat healthily- something he continued to do during his stay in the nursing home.

While he spoke to me about how his time in London had shaped his view of cultural difference,I looked into his eyes. I knew that this was the kind of control over life that I wanted for myself. I don’ t want to spend half of my time wandering about in foreign countries like he did, but I do want to appreciate the richness that life has to offer.

1. Why did the author go to the Renci Nursery Home?
A.It was run by his schoolmates.B.He meant to learn arts and crafts.
C.It housed some unfortunate seniors.D.He wanted a significant weekend.
2. What did the author think of the nursing home before he entered it?
A.It was filled with depression.B.It solved physical problems.
C.It was full of impressive activities.D.It connected different generations.
3. What mainly helped the author change his attitude toward old age?
A.The efforts of the elderly.B.The view of cultural difference.
C.The liveliness of an old man.D.The care of the nursing home.
4. What can we learn about the author?
A.He was trying to call on people to care for the elderly.
B.He found what he wanted for his life--living by his own law.
C.He would travel by himself like a backpacker.
D.He made adequate preparations for his old age.

At a young age, I repeatedly heard a sentence from my grandparents, “Honesty is the best policy.” I didn’t true understand it until I was nine, when I broke a window of our classroom after the school. 文章大意:本文是记叙文。讲述了一个由蟑螂引发思考的故事。

10 . At a restaurant, a cockroach(蟑螂) suddenly flew from somewhere and sat on a lady. She started screaming out of fear. With a panic stricken face and trembling voice, she started jumping, with both her hands desperately trying to throw away the cockroach. Her reaction was contagious, as everyone in her group also got panicky.

The lady finally managed to push the cockroach away but ...it landed on another lady in the group. Now, it was the turn of the other lady in the group to continue the drama. The waiter rushed forward to their rescue. In the relay of throwing, the cockroach next fell upon the waiter. The waiter stood firm, composed himself and observed the behavior of the cockroach on his shirt. When he was confident enough, he grabbed it with his fingers and threw it out of the restaurant.

Sipping my coffee and watching the amusement, I picked up a few thoughts and started wondering, was the cockroach responsible for their dramatic behavior? If so, then why was the waiter not disturbed? He handled it near to perfection, without any chaos. It is not the cockroach, but the inability of those people to handle the disturbance caused by the cockroach, that disturbed the ladies.

I realized that, it is not the shouting of my father or my boss or my wife that disturbs me, but it's my inability to handle the disturbances caused by their shouting that disturbs me. It's not the traffic jams on the road that disturbs me, but my inability to handle the disturbance caused by the traffic jam that disturbs me. More than the problem, it's my reaction to the problem that creates chaos in my life.

1. What does word “the drama” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Escape from the restaurant .B.Sip her coffee.
C.Get rid of the cockroach.D.Rush to the waiter.
2. Which of the following best describes the waiter?
A.Calm.B.Brave.C.Confident.D.Stubborn.
3. What disturbed the lady according to the author?
A.Being laughed at by her group.B.Her fear of the cockroach.
C.Her incapability to deal with the cockroach.D.Her jumping and screaming.
4. What does the author try to convey in the text?
A.It is never too late to learn.
B.Think twice before you act.
C.Always be ready to help others.
D.Your reaction to the problem determines how you feel.
