Peter lived in a village. He was always upset and treated others     1     (bad). He enjoyed himself by making other     2     (villager) unhappy. So the whole village avoided     3     (he) as much as they could. On the day when he turned eighty,     4     unusual thing happened. Everyone     5     (hear) the words. “Peter looks happy today. Instead of     6     (say) something bad, he smiles to everyone he meets.” When the whole village got together, Peter     7     (ask) why. I’m not usually a big risk-taker. I like to make plans and stick to them,    1    is exactly what I intended (打算) while travelling New Zealand. I’d planned    2    (catch) a long and scenic bus ride from Franz Josef to Wanaka.

Soon after we set off, the driver announced that we’d make a quick detour (绕路) to drop off a couple of    3    (passenger) at the skydiving (跳伞) centre. A middle-aged man took his eighty-year-old father, who used a stick for walking, to the park to take a walk every morning.

One day, while the old man stepped out from the car, his stick fell down, and he lost his balance.

However, his son caught his hand tightly     1     (immediate), and saved him. The old man smiled at his son gratefully. The son said, “Father, pleased put that stick aside. I     2     (support)you for walking.”

“What?” the son questioned his dad. The old man replied,

“We all want to be ‘young’ forever! Ageless! Life is short. So, live it to the fullest and make every second court!”

I have often thought it would be a     1    (bless) if each human being were stricken blind and deaf for a few days. And I have imagined what I should most like to see if I     2    (give) the use of my eyes for just three days.

On the first day, I should want to see the people     3    kindness and gentleness and companionship have made my life worth     4    (live). I should like to see the books which     5    (read) to me, and which have revealed to me the    6     (deep) channels of human life and the human spirit. In the afternoon I should take a long walk in the woods to enjoy the beauties of nature. That night, I should not be able to sleep.

On the second day, I should like to see the pageant of man’s progress and go to the museums. I should see the things I knew through touch.    7    night, I should go to the theater or the cinema.

On the third day, I should again greet the dawn and discover new delights     8    new revelations of beauty. Today, I shall spend in the workaday world and experience the business of life.

I,     9    blind lady, want to give a hint to those who see: Make full use of your senses, of which I think sight must be the most     10    (delight).

We have a problem that is deeply rooted in our world today. When it     1     (come) to the holidays, people tend to forget that it’s the season of giving rather than receiving. We tend to be more     2     (interest) in what we’ll receive on Christmas morning instead of looking at the holidays as an opportunity     3     (help) out those who don’t have it as good as we do. So how can we change the culture around the holidays and make sure that people are emphasizing the time to give as much     4     they are looking forward to opening up their stockings? This is a question worth     5     (think) about. Giving     6     (selfless) is the right thing to do, though many of us     7     (challenge) by the task. Whether or not we have much money to spare, it isn’t always easy to give away     8     we have worked so hard for, especially when we have set financial goals — saving for retirement, a vacation or a     9     (rain) day. Even with so many reasons to be unwilling, the advantages of giving outweigh them all. When we give to those in need, we make a positive difference     10     the lives of others and our own.
