2 . I’d been retired for four years, when a friend suggested university. I thought he was joking—I was rubbish at school and failed my 11-plus. But we love to compete over Mastermind and University challenge, and he thought I’d make it. And he was absolutely right!

I did a foundation course first, which was part time at the University Lifelong Learning Centre(LLC), two nights a week and the odd Saturday. I did quite well, and that gave me the confidence to do a full time, three year degree. I’m passionate about art and I always wanted to be here for the journey and not the destination. That sounds really corny, but it was the truth in my case.

Initially it was a bit strange fitting in with my course mates. They were all 18, straight out of sixth form or college. Over time, though, they’ve all been fine — now, we all get on really well and there is no issue. I’ve made plenty of friends as a member of the mature students society, and I do some volunteering through the LLC, chatting to prospective students about my experience of coming to university. I tell them my story and basically encourage them to give it a go because you’ve got nothing to lose. I like to think I’ve convinced a few of them.

I have no regrets at all. Enrolling in university was the best piece of advice I’ve received in years, especially post-retirement. I needed routine in my life; I needed purpose. I’m not going to spend my day in the bookies or the pub. If you’ve got a passion for something, you should pursue it.

1. What do we learn from Paragraph 1?
A.The author often competed with his friend at university,
B.The author was satisfied with his performance at school,
C.The advice of his friend was a big challenge for the author.
D.The author’s friend told a joke when suggesting university.
2. What was it that made him determined to pursue a full time degree?
A.His long held passion for art.
B.His boring retirement life.
C.His success in the foundation course.
D.His desire to travel to the destination.
3. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.How he got along with his course mates
B.How he helped his friends at university.
C.What activities he took part in at school
D.What he experienced as a volunteer.
4. Which of the following can serve as the title of the passage?
A.Knowledge is power.
B.It’s never too old to learn.
C.Failure is the mother of success.
D.A friend in need is a friend indeed.

9 . 阅读短文,按照题目要求用英语回答问题.

As my kids' summer vacation comes to an end, I find myself wanting to spend every moment with them. This past week I've been feeling guilty every time I schedule something that doesn't involve them, so I haven’t been doing much for myself. But the other day, I had a beauty treatment that I'd scheduled for over a month. I was so looking forward to it when I scheduled it, but as it approached I thought about cancelling it.

As I was leaving home, I told my kids how I was going to miss them and that I would hurry back. My daughter stopped her game, looked up at me and said, ''Oh, Mother, just go. You need to get your mood up again. '' '' Getting your mood up again'' is my daughter's way of telling me to leave home and come back with a better version of myself because it was taking a heavy toll on her too.

In that one sentence, she was telling me that she noticed I’d been running on fumes(烦恼).   She was letting me know she could feel my moodiness and irritation that stemmed from not taking the time for me because I was trying to so hard to be present for her and her brothers.

It occurred to me that I'd been neglecting care for myself because I thought my kids should come first. However, in reality, my kids just want me to be happy, even if that happiness means I'm not with them all the time. Our kids would rather have parents who are smiling and feel somewhat rested than spend their days listening to their parents sigh and complain.

1. Why did the author consider cancelling the beauty treatment?   (no more than 12 words)
2. How do you understand the underlined part in paragraph 2?   (no more than 10words)
3. What was the author's problem originally caused by?   (no more than 10 words)
4. What did the author finally realize? (no more than 10 words)
5. What do you learn from the author's story?   (no more than 20 words)

10 . It had long been troubling a little boy that his desk mate could rank 1st in the class every time while he failed to: he only ranked 21st.

At home, he asked his Mom, “Mom, am I more stupid than others? I feel I am as hardworking as him, but how come I always fall behind?”     1

In another test, the son ranked 15th, and his desk mate remained 1st. Back home, he raised the same question.     2     However, was this answer in her son’s best interest? Thank goodness she did not open her mouth.

There were times she wanted to tell him, “Your father and I used to be outstanding. Why aren’t you just as clever?” But she stopped because she felt it was cruel to blame him and that she needed a better answer.

3     To reduce the burden on her son who was suffering from the pains of unsatisfied grades and rankings, Mom decided to take him to the sea. During the trip, she managed to give out an answer.

Now, the son no longer worries about his rankings, because, with the 1st ranking, he is admitted to a top university.     4     In the lecture, he mentioned a valuable experience, “…When my mother and I was lying on the beach, she pointed to the front and said, ‘Do you see the seabirds over there? When the waves come near, little birds can rise quickly while it would take longer for clumsy sea-gulls to complete the process. However, have you noticed birds that finally fly across the endless ocean are none other than clumsy sea-gulls?’     5    ” The moving speech affected many mothers present into tears, including his mother.

A.Feeling sad for her son’s failure, mom scolded him.
B.Mom really wanted to tell her son that intelligence differs.
C.Hearing the words, she went wordless, not knowing how to explain.
D.You might be a bit slower, but you will be the one who will make it!
