1 . Comparing college entrance exams, there are different needs for admission. The national college entrance examination, or gaokao, is known as the most competitive test for Chinese students. Do students in other countries also need to take a standardized test to get into university?

South Korea holds the College Scholastic Ability Test(CSAT) in November each year. The CSAT plays an important role in the country’s education. On test day, bus and subway frequency increases to make sure that students can get to the test sites in time.

Japan is trying to reform its standardized national college entrance exam. In January 2022, Common Test for University Admissions took the place of the National Center Test for University Admissions, which had been adopted since 1990. The new exam aims to put emphasis on the ability of students to discover and solve problems by themselves.

The American College Test(ACT) and Scholastic Assessment Test(SAT) are the two main college entrance exams taken by students in the US. While SAT tests a student’s ability to learn, the ACT tests a student’s educational development. Both tests normally take place seven times throughout the year. Students can retake the exams for a better score.

In the UK, there’s no standardized test for college admission. Instead, each college has their own admission criteria. These criteria often only include submission of transcripts(成绩单) and participation in an interview. Yet, there are subject-specific exams used by some colleges.

Fall Arrival Information

Central Cheek-In (CCI) is for students entering in the fall of 2022, which will be held on September 1, 2022 from 8:00-11:00 a. m. in the Indoor Track and Tennis Facility (ITTF). Returning students cheek-in will he held on September 4 and September 5 from 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.in the Wilson Atrium, located on the second level of the Campus Center.

Early Arrivals

Students who are pre-approved for early arrival will receive email communication from Residence Life in early August. Any student may return to campus on Friday. September 2 from 10:30 a. m.-2:30 p. m. for an early arrival fee of $150 to be charged to their student account. Students are not required to pre-register for this early arrival date. Financial assistance is not available for early arrival fees.

Trunk Room Storage & Summer Storage

All house trunk rooms will open on Sunday, August 21 for the fall semester. As the JMG storage space is currently full, fall JMG storage hours will not be available until early August. If you need to store items this summer, seek off-campus storage options, Smith College’s preferred company for storage is Boomerang Storage. Sorry for this inconvenience.

Petition(请求) to Live Off-Campus (Deadline Extension)

Residence Life will continue to accept off-campus housing requests after the June 1 deadline. Any student who wishes to move off-campus may petition to do so by completing the Petition to Live Off-Campus via Residence Life Self-Service.

3 . ● Programme Information

The MPhil student is required to complete a minimum of 18 units of courses, including:

1. Two required courses (a total of 6 units).

2. Two elective courses offered by related programmes and departments (a total of 6 units).

3. A thesis (论文) guidance course every term from the beginning of the second year of study until the Master’s thesis is finally submitted (a total of 6 units).

4. Students are required to complete an MPhil thesis and pass an oral defense of the thesis.

5. English should be used in both the thesis and the oral defense.


● Fields of Specialization

The MPhil in Chinese Studies programme is devoted to advanced research training in the study of Chinese history, economy, politics and business, literature, film, religion, culture and society.


● Admission Requirements

Applicants should submit the following supporting application materials:

1. a research proposal, at least 5 pages in length and written in English.

2. a sample paper of at least 5 pages in length written in Chinese.


● Tuition Fee

HK $42,100 every year regardless of the study mode.
