文章大意:本文是篇说明文。文章主要介绍了考古学的几个让人意外的事情。

1 . Unexpected Things About Archaeology (考古学)

Archaeology is an amazing career. We get to explore and debate how life has been and can be lived, and we get to share this knowledge with people in a way which benefits society. If you don’t know an archaeologist or haven’t worked with one before, you might not know what they actually do or you might think we do things that we don’t.     1

Not all archaeology is underground.

A lot of people think of archaeology as being buried in the ground, but any physical material can tell us about the past.     2     In fact, there’s a whole specialism of archaeology that involves recording historic buildings and creating drawings and reports about them.

    3

You might think archaeologists are only interested in the most precious items, like coins, valuable jewellery or well-preserved objects. But often the most common items, like pottery, clay tobacco pipes, glass bottles or bricks, can tell them the most information. They help build a picture of people’s lives. Sometimes, not finding an object we thought would be there tells us something about the people.

Archaeologists don’t use brushes very often.

Many people think archaeologists spend all day brushing dirt off the items they find. They do sometimes use brushes to clean surfaces for clear photographs. But they mainly use tools like trowels, shovels or mattocks. A normal day involves a lot of heavy digging.    4     But sometimes archaeologists work with very fragile items. For this they would normally use tools like a thin “leave” trowel, but usually a brush.

Archaeologists can use technology to learn what is underground instead of digging.

5     Geophysical Survey uses electric and magnets to find tiny differences in the earth and creates a map of potential archaeology under the earth. Drones can also be used to take aerial photographs, where things like crop-marks can be clues to past human activity.

Archaeology is a science, an art and a form of physical work. It’s varied and can appeal to people with different interests and skills. It may take you on a journey you don’t expect!

A.Archaeology is for everybody.
B.Archaeologists aren’t only interested in gold.
C.Archaeologists don’t have to dig to learn about what is underground.
D.So we pulled together a list of things you might not know about archaeology.
E.This means above-ground remains, like buildings, are important forms of evidence.
F.They also must work quickly as they’re usually part of a wider construction project.
G.Archaeologists get more information about the history of an area with every site they dig.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。作者通过与一位中国留学生的交流意识到严格的移民政策使得中国学生在美国找工作更加困难,同时美国也因此而造成一些人才的流失。

3 . Recently, I had lunch with a young Chinese student who studies at a college in New York. He is very bright and ambitious and I enjoyed our conversation. Still, I felt upset and useless afterwards because I was not able to provide him with any good news. Graduating at the end of this year, he asked me how he could find a job in this country and fulfill his career dreams.

In recent years, students who found a job here after graduation have had to go through a cruel lottery system to obtain their H-1B working visa. And the success rates have been declining year after year because of the ever growing number of applicants. Last year, there were 233,000 applicants and only 30 percent of them were lucky, about half of the rate in 2013.

And it can only become worse. US former President Donald Trump’s immigration policies in this country have been tightening up and this trend will continue for at least the next few years. In this case, foreign students studying social sciences, a field in which starting salaries are rarely above the required amount, can kiss their visa hopes goodbye.

Compared to the older generation of Chinese students, today’s young people no longer consider the US as the only option. Many start to think China offers better opportunities in the longer term.

This is not to say that Chinese students in the US are not interested in job opportunities here any more. A few years of work experience in the US can give them advantages when they finally land back in their home country. But if the job opportunities are largely reduced by the tightening of immigration policy, I expect there will be a decline. And if that happens, it is the American economy that will suffer from the loss of those educated, hard-working and talented immigrants.

1. The author felt useless because ___.
A.he couldn’t find a job in the fierce job market.
B.he was less bright and ambitious than the Chinese young student.
C.he couldn’t win the cruel lottery.
D.he had to make the Chinese student realize it was difficult to find work there.
2. Which is not the reason why foreign students have difficulty finding jobs in the US?
A.It is increasingly hard for them to get their H-1B working visa.
B.The number of applicants in the job market is ever growing.
C.Donald Trump’s immigration policies have been tightening up.
D.The starting salaries they require are higher than expected.
3. Supposing there were 250, 000 applicants in 2013, how many of them got their H-1B working visa?
A.125, 000.
B.75, 000.
C.150. 000.
D.200, 000.
4. What’s the writer’s attitude towards the tightening of immigration policy in the US?
A.Indifferent.
B.Concerned.
C.Favorable.
D.Objective.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了Z世代(也称为“互联网世代”,通常是指1995年至2009年出生的一代人)毕业生对就业需求的变化,他们更青睐能够让他们在家灵活办公的科技公司。

4 . Generation Z is different. As a whole, Americans born between the late 1990s and early 2000s are less likely to have work or look for it: their labour- force-participation rate is 71%, compared with 75% for millennials (born between 1980 and the late 1990s) and 78% for Generation X (born in the decade or so to 1980) when each came of age. As a result, they make up a smaller share of the workforce. With graduation ceremonies behind them, the latest group of diploma-holders are entering the job market. What they want from employers is also not quite the same as in generations past.

Although Gen-Z employees felt more lonely and isolated than their older colleagues at the start of the pandemic, the ability to work remotely has brought new possibilities. The benefits go beyond working in your pyjamas. Many are taking calls from beach chairs and hammocks (吊床) in more comfortable places or fleeing big cities in search for cheaper or larger homes.

This has big implications. Industries with jobs that cannot be done from home are falling out of favour with recent graduates. A study by ManpowerGroup, an employment company, suggests an inverse relationship (反比关系) between talent shortages and flexible working policies. The sectors which are either less able to offer remote work or have been slower to embrace it- including construction, finance and manufacturing-have faced some of the biggest skills gaps for all types of job.

That in turn has accelerated a pre-existing trend of young employees trading Wall Street for Silicon Valley. Now technology bosses are more willing than their opposite numbers in finance to let employees work from home (or anywhere else). Annual rankings of employer desirability by Universum, a graduate-staffing consultancy, bear this out. In 2008 the list of best employers graded by American graduates was dominated by big banks and the Big Four consulting firms. By 2021 seven of the ten highest spots were occupied by tech and media giants.

1. What does the underlined word “diploma-holders" in the first paragraph refer to?
A.Employees.B.Students.
C.Graduates.D.Shareholders.
2. Why do Gen-Z employees prefer work remotely?
A.They want more holidays on the beach.
B.They love wearing pyjamas while working.
C.They want to work in a more flexible way.
D.They can’t afford the residents in big cities.
3. What does the study by ManpowerGroup suggest?
A.All walks of life are facing some of the biggest skills gaps.
B.Construction, finance and manufacturing can’t offer remote work.
C.Industries with flexible working policies may suffer talent shortages.
D.Industries with jobs that cannot be done from home are less popular.
4. Why does the author mention Wall Street and Silicon Valley?
A.To weigh up the pros and cons of the two industries.
B.To prove industries in technology are more appealing.
C.To predict the change of preference among employees.
D.To show Silicon Valley is a better place to settle down.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了最近的一项调查研究—孩子们更愿意成为网红,而不是宇航员这一现象以及所谓的网红工作的阴暗面。

5 . A recent survey found children would rather be online influencers than astronauts. It made headlines and led to plenty of complaints about “kids these days”. Is influencing a promising career path? The lifestyles we see advertised on social media are enticing, but under the shining appearance lie uncertain income, pay inequality, disability and mental health issues.

Successful influencers will be the first to claim that anyone can make it in the industry. However, social media economy experts uncovered a huge income gap between successful influencers and everyone else. For most people trying to become an influencer, their passion projects of content creation often become free work for brands.

Most influencers are self-employed, often experiencing inconsistent income and a lack of protection that comes with long-term employment. The risks of self-employment are increased in the influencer industry by an absence of industry standards and little pay transparency(透明度). Influencers are often forced to assess their own value and determine fees for their work. As a result, content creators often undervalue their own creative labour, and many end up working for free.

Influencers are also often at the mercy of algorithms (运算法则) — the behind-the-scenes computer programs that determine which posts are shown, in which order, to users. Platforms share little detail about their algorithms, yet they finally determine who and what gains visibility and influence on social media, the threat of invisibility is a constant source of insecurity for influencers, who are under constant pressure to feed platforms with content. If they don’t, they may be “punished” by the algorithm-having posts hidden or displayed lower down on search results.

Constant online presence leads to one of the most common issues in the influencer industry: mental health concerns. Influencers can connect to their platform workspaces and audience at any time of day or night, which can lead to them overworking. Coupled with the fear of online criticism, it contributes to mental and physical health issues.

Although becoming an influencer may look appealing to more and more people, the industry’s dark underside needs to be made visible and improved through enhanced employment regulation and industry-led cultural change.

1. What does the underlined word “enticing” in paragraph 1 mean?
A.ImaginativeB.SimilarC.TraditionalD.Attractive
2. What might lead to many influencers undervaluing their creative work?
A.Their belief in winning through quantity.
B.Money paid by the industry is often hidden.
C.Their eagerness to make their work visible online.
D.There’re few employment opportunities in the industry.
3. Why do the influencers feel stressed according to paragraph 4?
A.They are often punished by platforms.
B.They have little knowledge of platform algorithm.
C.They find it difficult to create new content constantly.
D.They have to work out the order of posts to be displayed.
4. What is the author’s purpose in writing this text?
A.To describe the life of self-employed content creators.
B.To stress the importance of visibility in the online world.
C.To reveal relationships between platforms and influencers.
D.To show the dark side of working as an online content creator.

7 . As a kid, Pamela Akuku spent her weekends exploring the National Museums of Kenya, following along with her mom who worked there. Akuku became fascinated with the researchers. She saw them using various equipment and researching the fossils carefully. “But I didn’t know what they were doing at the time,” she says. “I kept asking my mom about it.”

Akuku’s mom saw her daughter’s curiosity and signed her up for the museum’s Young Researchers Club. Akuku soon took part in mock excavations (模拟挖掘) and reconstructed bones. “I enjoyed reading and puzzles,” says Akuku. “And this was a mixture of the two.”

The museum experiences helped inspire her career as an archeologist. After her four years in university, she was sure that she wanted to study archaeology. She did her master’s in South Africa and majored in zooarchaeology (动物考古学). She is now at the Catalan Institute of Human Paleoecology and Social Evolution in Tarragona, Spain. There, she studies how ancient humans modified (改良) animal bones. Her research is helping to reveal more about where early humans lived. She’s currently studying the remains from Tanzania’s Olduvai Gorge, where researchers previously discovered stone tools and evidence of early human ancestors going back as far as 2 million years.

Akuku gives some advice to people who want to do her job. “Be prepared to come across hard conditions. Working in this field is challenging. You have to work twice as hard just to be recognized,” Akuku said. But she has learned to deal with it. Now she always tells everyone the efforts are worthy.

8 . Oliver, the CTO of a high-tech company, loved to participate in all conversations at the C-suite level, regardless of topic. He was often the first to raise his hand for a project, appeared to have infinite capacity to get high-quality work done, and offered to assist his peers and direct reports. Oliver seemed to be all-in; optimistic, energetic, supportive, and someone who constituted to everyone.

However, the more Oliver participated, the more others around him were slighted. Instead of sparking creatively in others, his ideas outshone everyone else’s. He consumed time speaking in meetings, exhausting the oxygen level in the room. Oliver felt pumped up by how many of his ideas had been deployed but frustrated by others’ lack of sufficient effort.

While the CEO appreciated Oliver’s yield, she recognized he had to change his approach to keep the rest of the team productive. In response, Oliver worked out a plan to help address his cooperation challenges using techniques many other executives had deployed.

When we over-participate, we believe that we're being helpful. However, “helpfulness” is defined by the recipient, not the giver. Instead of improving his relationships with colleagues, Oliver robbed them of fulfillment by furnishing masses of ideas. They felt discouraged, interrupted, and excluded. To fix the issue, Oliver learned the value of asking two specific questions before offering his own ideas: “What have you thought of?” and “What would be most helpful for you at this point?” Surveying others to understand what’s helpful illuminates better avenues for our contribution: directly through our ideas, through coaching colleagues to create their own, or by building on what someone else has generated.

1. What can we learn about Oliver?
A.He lacks creativity.B.He favours competition.
C.He works enthusiastically.D.He behaves irresponsibly.
2. What is a result of Oliver’s over-participation?
A.The team generated more diverse ideas.
B.Oliver’s colleagues became less productive.
C.Group meetings were more time-consuming.
D.Oliver’s teammates were inspired to work harder.
3. What technique did Oliver employ to fix the issue?
A.Hearing others’ voices.B.Providing specific ideas.
C.Strengthening his leadership.D.Building strong relationships.
4. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.When Leaders Fail to Keep the Team Productive
B.When Contributing Gets in the Way of Cooperating
C.How a Great Team Welcomes Ideas in a Discussion
D.How Active Participation Gives Rise to a Better Team

9 . How to Choose Your Purpose-Filled Career

When you think about choosing a career, you often do it in the following two ways.

1    . If you like writing or doing crafts, you might consider these things. This is not a bad way to go, of course, but you can’t always make money doing things you like (like video games or drinking beer). And sometimes things you like are better as a hobby or side passion.

Think about a well-paid job that you can do and doesn’t sound so bad. Maybe a doctor, engineer or lawyer? Or maybe that’s out of your educational reach, so you choose office or retail worker.     2     but often they are not something you’re really passionate about. It’s kind of like just doing something because it’s there-- not very inspired.

However, there’s another way that is perhaps better:     3    . For example, taking care of children, because you really want to help children get a great start in life, or blossom into who they want to be or getting into government or social work to improve the conditions of the community you live in or becoming a scientist to help ease the environmental crisis or find a cure for a terrible disease.     4     and if you choose one of them for that purpose, you will serve in that work feeling a sense of purpose each day.

There are endless ways to do that. The point isn’t how you serve the world, but just serving the world in some way will help you feel filled with purpose.     5    .

A.These are all great choices
B.Think about what you like to do
C.You can identify your purpose and work out how to get there
D.Each of these is just one of many possibilities filled with purpose
E.Try to do something to serve a community or make the world better
F.The sooner you complete the training requirements, the sooner you will make a living
G.If you choose a purposeful and enjoyable job, you’re always further along than most people

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了工作中断带来积极的方面。

10 . It came as no surprise that being interrupted by other people can have negative effects, like lowered productivity. But a new study shows an upside to these interruptions at work: increased feelings of belonging.

Researchers led by Harshad Puranik at the University of Illinois at Chicago looked at this common workplace phenomenon from two aspects. First, interruptions get in the way of completing assignments and require employees to repeatedly switch attention between tasks. That's where the negative effects of interruptions happen. However, beyond the task-based aspect, the group found that being interrupted by others has a social component to it — social interaction with the interrupter that can have a positive effect on the interrupted employees. "If the past year of social distancing and separation has shown us anything, it is that humans are social beings who have an inherent (内在的) need for interacting with others," said Puranik.

Building on previous research on work interruptions, the researchers surveyed 111 full-time employees twice a day once at lunch and once at the end of their workday for three weeks. While there were downsides to interruptions al work, like raising levels of stress and lowering people’s energy, there was an upside, the researchers found. Employees felt more like they belonged, which eventually allowed them to get more pleasure from their work routines.

The study found something else on top of this. The social aspect of work interruptions also weakened the negative impact that the switching of tasks during interruptions had on employees job satisfaction. This means that, intend of the negative experience, being interrupted at work can be "a net positive for the well-being of employees, "according to Puranik. Therefore, the researchers urge managers to better manage rather than completely prohibit work interruptions.

1. Why does the author mention Puranik's words in Paragraph 2?
A.To introduce a new argument.B.To make his points more persuasive.
C.To summarize the whole paragraph.D.To provide some advice for the readers.
2. What did researchers find about work interruptions in social aspect?
A.They caused more anxiety.B.They improved work-life balance.
C.They lowered labor productivity.D.They led to higher job satisfaction.
3. Who is the text intended for?
A.Employers.B.Employees.C.Job seekers.D.Interviewers.
4. What's the best title of the text?
A.Scientific Management CountsB.Ways of Staying Focused at Work
C.Interruptions at Work Bring Positive SidesD.Reasons for Avoiding Interruptions at Work
